Pneumatic systems are used extensively in various industries.\u00a0 Most pneumatic systems rely on a constant supply of compressed air to make them work. This is provided by an air compressor. The compressor sucks in air from the atmosphere and stores it in a high pressure tank called a receiver. This compressed air is then supplied to the system through a series of pipes and valves.\r\n\r\nThe word \u2018Pneuma\u2019 means air. Pneumatics is all about using compressed air to do the work. Compressed air is the air from the atmosphere which is reduced in volume by compression thus increasing its pressure. It is used as a working medium normally at a pressure of 6 kg\/sq mm to 8 kg\/sq mm. For using pneumatic systems, maximum force up to 50 kN can be developed. Actuation of the controls can be manual, pneumatic or electrical actuation. Compressed air is mainly used to do work by acting on a piston or vane. Since conventional absorption systems use natural refrigerants such as water or ammonia they are environment friendly.\r\n\r\nRead more :Vapor Compression Refrigeration System | Basic, Working, Parts Of System\r\nConstruction:\r\n\r\n \tThe vapour absorption system consists of a condenser, an expansion valve and an evaporator.\r\n \tThey perform the same as they do in vapour compression method.\r\n \tIn addition to these, this system has an absorber, a heat exchanger, an analyser and a rectifier.\r\n\r\n practical ammonia -water vapour absorption system\r\nWorking:\r\n1. Dry ammonia vapour at low pressure passes in to the absorber from the evaporator.\r\n2. In the absorber the dry ammonia vapour is dissolved in cold water and strong solution of ammonia is formed.\r\n3. Heat evolved during the absorption of ammonia is removed by circulating cold water through the coils kept in the absorber.\r\n4. The highly concentrated ammonia (known as Aqua Ammonia) is then pumped by a pump to generator through a heat exchanger.\r\n5. In the heat exchanger the strong ammonia solution is heated by the hot weak solution returning from the generator to the absorber.\r\n6. In the generator the warm solution is further heated by steam coils, gas or electricity and the ammonia vapour is driven out of solution.\r\n7. The boiling point of ammonia is less than that of water.\r\n8. Hence the vapours leaving the generator are mainly of ammonia.\r\n9. The weak ammonia solution is left in the generator is called weak aqua.\r\n10. This weak solution is returned to the absorber through the heat exchanger.\r\n11. Ammonia vapours leaving the generator may contain some water vapour.\r\n12. If this water vapour is allowed to the condenser and expansion valve, it may freeze resulting in chocked flow.\r\n13. Analyser and rectifiers are incorporated in the system before condenser.\r\n14. The ammonia vapour from the generator passes through a series of trays in the analyser and ammonia is separated from water vapour.\r\n15. The separated water vapour returned to generator.\r\n16. Then the ammonia vapour passes through a rectifier.\r\n17. The rectifier resembles a condenser and water vapour still present in ammonia vapour condenses and the condensate is returned to analyser.\r\n18. The virtually pure ammonia vapour then passes through the condenser.\r\n19. The latent heat of ammonia vapour is rejected to the cooling water circulated through the condenser and the ammonia vapour is condensed to liquid ammonia.\r\n20. The high pressure liquid ammonia is throttled by an expansion valve or throttle valve.\r\n21. This reduces the high temperature of the liquid ammonia to a low value and liquid ammonia partly evaporates.\r\n22. Then this is led to the evaporator.\r\n23. In the evaporator the liquid fully vaporizes.\r\n24. The latent heat of evaporation is obtained from the brine or other body which is being cooled.\r\n25. The low pressure ammonia vapour leaving the evaporator again enters the absorber and the cycle is completed.\r\n26. The name gate is derived from the appearance of the disk in the flow stream. Figure\u00a0 illustrates a gate valve.\r\nThe disk of a gate valve is completely removed from the flow stream when the valve is fully open. This characteristic offers virtually no resistance to flow when the valve is open. Hence, there is little pressure drop across an open gate valve.\r\nWhen the valve is fully closed, a disk-to-seal ring contact surface exists for 360\u00b0, and good sealing is provided. With the proper mating of a disk to the seal ring, very little or no leakage occurs across the disk when the gate valve is closed.\r\n\r\nOn opening the gate valve, the flow path is enlarged in a highly nonlinear manner with respect to percent of opening. This means that flow rate does not change evenly with stem travel.\r\nAlso, a partially open gate disk tends to vibrate from the fluid flow. Most of the flow change occurs near shutoff with a relatively high fluid velocity causing disk and seat wear and eventual leakage if used to regulate flow. For these reasons, gate valves are not used to regulate or throttle flow.\r\n\r\nA gate valve can be used for a wide variety of fluids and provides a tight seal when closed. \r\n\r\nThe major disadvantages to the use of a gate valve are:\r\nIt is not suitable for throttling applications.\r\nIt is prone to vibration in the partially open state.\r\nIt is more subject to seat and disk wear than a globe valve.\r\nRepairs, such as lapping and grinding, are generally more difficult to accomplish.\r\n\r\ngate valve diagram\r\n\r\nGate Valve Disk Design\r\nGate valves are available with a variety of disks. Classification of gate valves is usually made by the type disk used: solid wedge, flexible wedge, split wedge, or parallel disk. Solid wedges, flexible wedges, and split wedges are used in valves having inclined seats. Parallel\r\ndisks are used in valves having parallel seats. Regardless of the style of wedge or disk used, the disk is usually replaceable. In services where solids or high velocity may cause rapid erosion of the seat or disk, these components should have a high surface hardness and should have replacement seats as well as disks. If the seats are not replaceable, seat damage requires removal of the valve from the line for refacing of the\r\nseat, or refacing of the seat in place. Valves being used in corrosion service should normally be specified with replaceable seats.\r\n\r\nGate Valve Stem Design\r\n\r\nGate valves are classified as either rising stem or nonrising stem valves. For the nonrising stem gate valve, the stem is threaded on the lower end into the gate. As the hand wheel on the stem is rotated, the gate travels up or down the stem on the threads while the stem remains vertically stationary. This type valve will almost always have a pointer-type indicator threaded onto the upper end of the stem to indicate valve position. Figures 2 and 3 illustrate rising-stem gate valves and nonrising stem gate valves.\r\nThe nonrising stem configuration places the stem threads within the boundary established by the valve packing out of contact with the environment. This configuration assures that the stem merely rotates in the packing without much danger of carrying dirt into the packing from outside to inside.\r\nRising stem gate valves are designed so that the stem is raised out of the flowpath when the valve is open. Rising stem gate valves come in two basic designs. Some have a stem that rises through the handwheel while others have a stem that is threaded to the bonnet.\r\n\r\nGate Valve Seat Design\r\nSeats for gate valves are either provided integral with the valve body or in a seat ring type of construction. Seat ring construction provides seats which are either threaded into position or are pressed into position and seal welded to the valve body. The latter form of construction is recommended for higher temperature service. \r\n\r\nIntegral seats provide a seat of the same material of construction as the valve body while the pressed-in or threaded-in seats permit variation. Rings with hard facings may be supplied for the application where they are required.\r\nSmall, forged steel, gate valves may have hard faced seats pressed into the body. In some series, this type of valve in sizes from 1\/2 to 2 inches is rated for 2500 psig steam service. In large gate valves, disks are often of the solid wedge type with seat rings threaded in, welded in, or pressed in. A strong solution enters absorber through heat exchanger in exchanging heat with weak solution .\r\n\r\n2.\u00a0Function of\u00a0Condenser\u00a0 in absorption chiller\u00a0\r\nRefrigerant vapor from generator is condensed in condenser by cooling water.Condensation is constant pressure process where refrigerant (water) gives off its heat to cooling water .In this way refrigerant heat is carried to atmosphere.In water cooled chillers , cooling water recycles after exchanging heat with air in cooling towers of same\u00a0HVAC system.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n3. Function of Evaporator in absorption chiller\r\n\r\nRefrigerant from condenser flows to evaporator .In this compartment of absorption chiller,refrigerant gets vaporized by taking heat from chilled water.Refrigerant from evaporator refrigerant pan is pumped over the evaporator tubes with the help of refrigerant pump.Flow of refrigerant over evaporator tubes evaporates the refrigerant thus producing refrigeration effect, and evaporates to form vapor by absorbing heat of chilled water flowing through tubes.In this way,evaporation takes place at constant pressure process where refrigerant gets latent heat from chiller water.Chiller absorption takes place here in absorber. Chilled water is cooled and return to the system of customer.\r\n\r\n4.\u00a0Function of\u00a0Absorber\u00a0in absorption chiller\r\n\r\n Function of Absorber in absorption chiller\r\n\r\nProduced refrigerant vapor enters absorber, and absorbed by strong solution in the absorber. In this way,strong solution is diluted by absorbing refrigerant vapor in absorber . Heat generated is carried to atmosphere by cooling water.\r\n\r\n5.\u00a0Function of HVAC\u00a0Solution\u00a0Pump in absorption chiller\r\n\r\nThis weak solution is transferred by solution pump to generator for concentration.Pumps are components in absorption cooling systems which require electric energy for its operation.Weak solution from the absorber is pumped into the generator through heat exchanger.
