Objects can be of almost any shape or geometry and typically are produced using digital model data from a 3D model or another electronic data source such as an Additive Manufacturing File (AMF) file (usually in sequential layers). There are many different technologies, like stereolithography (STL) or fused deposit modeling (FDM).
Types Of 3D metal Printing Machines / Methods
Selective Laser Melting - SLM takes help of laser to melt and add the powders. It’s a good way to arrange alloys.
Selective Laser Sintering - SLS, mainly used for plastics, can be used for some metal types. SLS and SLM both help in metal 3D printing.
Robocasting - Robocasting makes ceramic models.
Cold-Spray Metal Printing - The rapid mode of 3D print metal, initially applied by NASA to create metal objects in space.
Binder Jetting and Inkjet 3D Printing - This printing method with the help of powders very much like SLS are used in amalgamating objects.
Magnetojet Printing - With the help of metallic ink spray, magnetism is created to yield rapid and illustrate various shapes.
Directed Energy Deposition - DED uses laser influenced metal 3D printing. It mainly adds parts to objects instead of making everything from the start.
Ultrasonic Particle Manipulation - It is a unique technique that will help to amalgamate various materials into one whole thing.
Laser Metal Deposition - A melting technique, which allows powders to settle and with the help of lasers apply heat to create shapes. Currently, it works on iron, nickel-based, cobalt based alloys, tungsten and various metal powdered coated metals.

3D Metal Printer- Selective Laser Melting
Selective laser melting (SLM) or Direct metal laser sintering (DMLS) is a particularly rapid prototyping, 3D printing, or Additive Manufacturing (AM) technique designed to use a high power-density laser to melt and fuse metallic powders together.[1][2] In many SLM is considered to be a subcategory of Selective Laser Sintering (SLS). The SLM process has the ability to fully melt the metal material into a solid 3D-dimensional part unlike SLS.

selective laser melting -3d metal printer

Working of 3d Metal Printing Process
DMLS uses a variety of alloys, allowing prototypes to be functional hardware made out of the same material as production components. Since the components are built layer by layer, it is possible to design organic geometries, internal features and challenging passages that could not be cast or otherwise machined. DMLS produces strong, durable metal parts that work well as both functional prototypes or end-use production parts.

The process starts by slicing the 3D CAD file data into layers, usually from 20 to 100 micrometres thick, creating a 2D image of each layer; this file format is the industry standard .stl file used on most layer-based 3D printing or stereolithography technologies. This file is then loaded into a file preparation software package that assigns parameters, values and physical supports that allow the file to be interpreted and built by different types of additive manufacturing machines.

With selective laser melting, thin layers of atomized fine metal powder are evenly distributed using a coating mechanism onto a substrate plate, usually metal, that is fastened to an indexing table that moves in the vertical (Z) axis. This takes place inside a chamber containing a tightly controlled atmosphere of inert gas, either argon or nitrogen at oxygen levels below 500 parts per million. Once each layer has been distributed, each 2D slice of the part geometry is fused by selectively melting the powder. This is accomplished with a high-power laser beam, usually an ytterbium fiber laser with hundreds of watts. The laser beam is directed in the X and Y directions with two high frequency scanning mirrors. The laser energy is intense enough to permit full melting (welding) of the particles to form solid metal. The process is repeated layer after layer until the part is complete.

The DMLS machine uses a high-powered 200 watt Yb-fiber optic laser. Inside the build chamber area, there is a material dispensing platform and a build platform along with a recoater blade used to move new powder over the build platform. The technology fuses metal powder into a solid part by melting it locally using the focused laser beam. Parts are built up additively layer by layer, typically using layers 20 micrometers thick.
Applications of 3d metal printer:
Industry applications

 Aerospace – Air ducts, fixtures or mountings holding specific aeronautic instruments, laser-sintering fits both the needs of commercial and military aerospace
 Manufacturing – Laser-sintering can serve niche markets with low volumes at competitive costs. Laser-sintering is independent of economies of scale, this liberates you from focusing on batch size optimization.
 Medical – Medical devices are complex, high value products. They have to meet customer requirements exactly. These requirements do not only stem from the operator’s personal preferences: legal requirements or norms that differ widely between regions also have to be complied with. This leads to a multitude of varieties and thus small volumes of the variants offered.
 Prototyping – Laser-sintering can help by making design and functional prototypes available. As a result, functional testing can be initiated quickly and flexibly. At the same time, these prototypes can be used to gauge potential customer acceptance.
 Tooling – The direct process eliminates tool-path generation and multiple machining processes such as EDM. Tool inserts are built overnight or even in just a few hours. Also the freedom of design can be used to optimize tool performance, for example by integrating conformal cooling channels into the tool.

Other applications

 Parts with cavities, undercuts, draft angles
 Fit, form, and function models
 Tooling, fixtures, and jigs
 Conformal cooling channels
 Rotors and impellers
 Complex bracketing
3D Metal Printing – Types, working and Application
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Internet Of things – IOT – Meaning , Examples and Applications

Internet Of things – IOT – Meaning , Examples and Applications

Internet Of things - IOT - Meaning , Examples and Applications

So it’s a building that uses sensors to automatically adjust heating and lighting. Or production equipment alerting maintenance personnel to an impending failure. Simply put, the Internet of Things is the future of technology that can make our lives more efficient.

The Internet of Things (IoT) is the network of physical devices, vehicles, home appliances and other items embedded with electronics, software, sensors, actuators, and connectivity which enables these objects to connect and exchange data. Each thing is uniquely identifiable through its embedded computing system but is able to inter-operate within the existing Internet infrastructure.

What is IoT ?
Simply put, IoT is the concept of basically connecting any device with an on and off switch to the Internet (and/or to each other). This includes everything from cellphones, coffee makers, washing machines, headphones, lamps, wearable devices and almost anything else you can think of. This also applies to components of machines, for example, a jet engine of an airplane.

How does it work?

IoT enabled Big Data. The Internet of Things (IoT) consists of all the web-enabled devices that collect, send and act on data they acquire from their surrounding environments using embedded sensors, processors and communication hardware. These "connected" or "smart" devices, can sometimes talk to other related devices and act on the information they get from one another.

The concept of IoT says that “Every device has the ability to communicate with each other through networks and make smart decision based on data collected by each device”

INTERNET OF THINGS
Internet of things ( IOT ) Examples :
A smart home usually consists of a central control unit (maybe physical or on cloud) which reads information from every type of sensor spread throughout the home. Motion Sensors, Temperature Sensors etc generating information every second and sending it to the central unit. The central unit makes decision based on what information is sent to it by these sensors and hence the entire home is automated. Below given are some example of how sensors and central unit can be used to make a smart home:

 Proximity sensor can be placed in refrigerators to sense the stock inside and send data to central unit. Now central unit can process this and order food online if the need comes.
 Motion Sensors in entire house with facial recognition to recognize thieves and respond accordingly by sending message to authorities nearby
 Temperature Sensors can be used to maintain the temperature of home as and when the need be according to the weather outside home.

Application Of IOT :
So here are possible applications for IoT solutions.

 Smart Parking - Monitoring of parking spaces availability in the city.
 Structural health - Monitoring of vibrations and material conditions in buildings, bridges and historical monuments.
 Noise Urban Maps - Sound monitoring in bar areas and centric zones in real time.
 Smartphone Detection - Detect iPhone and Android devices and in general any device which works with WiFi or Bluetooth interfaces.
 Eletromagnetic Field Levels - Measurement of the energy radiated by cell stations and and WiFi routers.
 Traffic Congestion - Monitoring of vehicles and pedestrian levels to optimize driving and walking routes.
 Smart Lighting - Intelligent and weather adaptive lighting in street lights.
 Waste Management - Detection of rubbish levels in containers to optimize the trash collection routes.
 Smart Roads - Intelligent Highways with warning messages and diversions according to climate conditions and unexpected events like accidents or traffic jams.
 Forest Fire Detection - Monitoring of combustion gases and preemptive fire conditions to define alert zones.
 Air Pollution - Control of CO2 emissions of factories, pollution emitted by cars and toxic gases generated in farms.
 Snow Level Monitoring - Snow level measurement to know in real time the quality of ski tracks and allow security corps avalanche prevention.
 Landslide and Avalanche Prevention - Monitoring of soil moisture, vibrations and u density to detect dangerous patterns in land conditions.
 Earthquake Early Detection - Distributed control in specific places of tremors.
 Potable water monitoring - Monitor the quality of tap water in cities.
 Chemical leakage detection in rivers - Detect leakages and wastes of factories in rivers.
 Swimming pool remote measurement - Control remotely the swimming pool conditions
Internet Of things – IOT – Meaning , Examples and Applications
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Stick Welding – Working , Advantages and Disadvantages

Stick Welding – Working , Advantages and Disadvantages

Stick Welding - Working , Advantages and Disadvantages

The workpiece and the electrode melts forming a pool of molten metal (weld pool) that cools to form a joint. As the weld is laid, the flux coating of the electrode disintegrates, giving off vapors that serve as a shielding gas and providing a layer of slag, both of which protect the weld area from atmospheric contamination.

All arc welding processes apply heat generated by an electric arc for melting the faying surfaces of the base metal to develop a weld joint (Fig.). Common arc
welding processes are manual metal or shielded metal arc welding (MMA or SMA), metal inert gas arc (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG), submerged arc (SA), plasma arc (PA), carbon arc (CA) selding etc.
Stick welding Diagram :
stick welding working diagram

Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW)
In this process, the heat is generated by an electric arc between base metal and a consumable electrode. In this process electrode movement is manually controlled hence it is termed as manual metal arc welding. This process is extensively used for depositing weld metal because it is easy to deposit the molten weld metal at right place where it is required and it doesn’t need separate shielding. This process is commonly used for welding of the metals, which are comparatively less sensitive to the atmospheric gases.
This process can use both AC and DC. The constant current DC power source is invariably used with all types of electrode (basic, rutile and cellulosic) irrespective of base metal (ferrous and non-ferrous). However, AC can be unsuitable for certain types of electrodes and base materials. Therefore, AC should be used in light of
manufacturer’s recommendations for the electrode application. In case of DC welding, heat liberated at anode is generally greater than the arc column and
cathode side. The amount of heat generated at the anode and cathode may differ appreciably depending upon the flux composition of coating, base metal, polarity and the nature of arc plasma. In case of DC welding, polarity determines the distribution of the heat generated at the cathode and anode and accordingly the melting rate of electrode and penetration into the base metal are affected.

Heat generated by a welding arc (J) = Arc voltage (V) X Arc current (A) X Welding time (s)---------------------------------------------------------------(equation 1)

If arc is moving at speed S (mm/min) then net heat input is calculated as:

Hnet= VI (60)/(S X 1000) kJ/mm....................................(equation 2)

Common types of SMAW electrodes

The steel electrode of a given composition is made available with different types of flux coating in order to make them suitable for different arc characteristics, welding position, welding speed, deposition rate, weld metal recovery, weld metal properties and variety of quality requirements. The selection of correct type of electrode coating results in weld metal with desired quality characteristics at low cost. In general, welding electrode is selected in such a way that characteristics of weld metal are similar to or better than the base material while keeping in mind the welding position and weld joints design as they significantly affect the properties of the weld.

Rutile electrode
These electrodes predominantly contain rutile (TiO2) besides other constituents and are known to offer almost 100% weld metal recovery, easy arc striking and restriking. These are found suitable for

a) fillet welds,

b) welding of sheet metal,

c) good gap bridging capability,

d) free from spatter losses and all position welding.
These are recommended for welding low strength steel (<440 MPa). For welding of high strength steel (>440 MPa) generally weld metal should have low hydrogen level and therefore weld joints is developed using basic, rutile, basic-rutile and Zirconbased electrode.

Cellulosic electrodes
These electrodes are composed of large amount of hydrocarbon compounds and calcium carbonates besides other constituents and are found suitable for

a) all welding positions especially for vertical and overhead welding position and

b) realizing high mechanical properties in a weld metal of radiographic quality. These are preferred for vertical downward welding. However, these produce high hydrogen content in weld metal besides deep penetration.

Acidic electrode
Acidic electrodes offer

a) easier arc striking than basic electrodes but poorer arc striking than rutile electrodes,

b) moderate welding speed,

c) smooth weld bead

d) good slag detachability.

However, acidic electrode has been replaced by rutile electrode and basic electrode for flat and positional welding respectively. The ductility and toughness weld metal developed by acidic electrode are better than those developed from rutile electrodes however yield and ultimate tensile strength are found inferior. This type of electrode results in minimal penetration which is good for very thin sheet but these are sensitive to moisture pick up.

Basic electrode
These electrodes have basic (alkali) coatings containing calcium carbonate / calcium fluoride.The basic electrodes are preferred over other electrode for developing weld joints of high strength steel (480-550 MPa) with weld metal having

a) low hydrogen,
b) good low temperature toughness,

c) resistance to hot and cold cracking. However, these electrodes suffer from comparatively poor slag detachability. The welding speed and deposition rate offered by the basic electrodes especially in vertical welding position is much higher than the rutile and acidic electrode. Basic electrodes can sustain higher welding current even in vertical welding position.

Basic-rutile electrode
This type of electrode combines positives of both basic as well as rutile electrodes and therefore recommended for horizontal–vertical fillet welds of high strength
steels.

Stick Welding Advantages

 Stick welding is effective even when it’s windy or raining
 The equipment required is not very expensive
 It needs no external shielding gas, which saves money
 It’s less sensitive to paint, corrosion, and dirt at the welding point, saving time on pre-welding clean-up
 It’s easy to change rods for different metals
 The ground clamp can be attached far from the welding point

Stick Welding Limitations

 Compared to other methods of welding, stick welding is slow
 It is a more complicated process, which requires a welder with skill and experience in stick welding
 It is time-consuming to chip away the slag that formed during the weld
 It can be difficult to weld thinner metals
 The welding rods must be replaced more frequently than in other types of welding
 There can be excessive spatter, rough surfaces, and porosity with stick welding
Stick Welding – Working , Advantages and Disadvantages
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Onshape CAD – Online 3D Modelling Software for Engineers

Onshape CAD – Online 3D Modelling Software for Engineers

Onshape CAD - Online 3D Modelling Software for Engineers

With that comes a new way of thinking about how users develop designs and collaborate. Access Onshape through a browser on any device. Being browser-based, Onshape requires no software to be downloaded, no files to manage.
 Onshape is a computer-aided design (CAD) software system, delivered over the Internet via a Software as a Service (SAAS) model. It makes extensive use of cloud computing, with compute-intensive processing and rendering performed on Internet-based servers, and users are able to interact with the system via a web browser or the iOS and Android apps.
 Onshape allows teams to collaborate on a single shared design, the same way multiple writers can work together editing a shared document via cloud services.
 It is primarily focused on mechanical CAD (MCAD) and is used for product and machinery design across many industries, including consumer electronics, mechanical machinery, medical devices, 3D printing, machine parts, and industrial equipment.
 Onshape upgrades are released directly to the web interface, and the software does not require maintenance work from the user.

Company history

 In November 2012, former SolidWorks CEOs Jon Hirschtick and John McEleney led a team of six co-founders launching Belmont Technology, a placeholder name that was later changed to Onshape. The company’s first round of funding was $9 million from North Bridge Venture Partners and Commonwealth Capital.
 In April 2016, Onshape introduced its Education Plan, with a free version of Onshape Professional geared for college students and educators.
 In May 2016, Onshape released FeatureScript, a new open source (MIT licensed) programming language for creating and customizing CAD features

To run Onshape No Software Download , No Hardware Needed.
No downloading software, files, or other nonsense. You are always working on the latest version of Onshape (updates are typically deployed every two weeks) and so are your collaborators. Never worry about having incompatibility issues again. The demands on hardware are now much lower (Onshape works on Chrome-books just fine). Very flexible.

Solid Modeling Capabilities
Onshape at this point has limited Solid Modeling capabilities compared to most mid-range CAD tools. They are developing everything from the ground-up so. New features and enhancements are introduced regularly (fortnightly updates) and I feel positive about how long it will take the development team to have much of what most users will need.

Onshape CAD - 3D Modelling Software for Engineers
Language Used for Online 3D Cad Software
FeatureScript is a new programming language designed by Onshape for building and working with 3D parametric models. The language is built into Onshape from the ground up, providing the foundation of Part Studio modeling, including robust geometric references, powerful parametric tools, and a type system with types built for math in three dimensions.

Costs
Pricing has been announced. There are free versions that only restrict the number of private documents a user has. The free version has all of the functionality within a document that the professional version has. Professional version has no restrictions on the number of private documents created and costs $100/month. This is going to be quite disruptive to the incumbents.
Onshape CAD – Online 3D Modelling Software for Engineers
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Onshape-CAD-3D-Modelling-Software-for-Engineers-300x168.jpg
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to What Is DWG files – How To Open .dwg Files

What Is DWG files – How To Open .dwg Files

What is DWG files - How To Open .dwg Files

DWG files are basically CAD (Computer Aided Design) drawings consisting of vector image data and metadata written with binary coding. It is the native format of most CAD applications, specially AutoCAD. In fact, it was developed in the 1970’s by the same authority ‘AutoDesk’ who developed AutoCAD. This format is widely used by architects, engineers, and designers for various designing purposes. DWG files are compatible with CorelDRAW.
 DWG (from drawing) is a proprietary binary file format used for storing two- and three- dimensional design data and metadata. It is the native format for several CAD packages including DraftSight, AutoCAD, IntelliCAD (and its variants), Caddie and Open Design Alliance compliant applications. In addition, DWG is supported non-natively by many other CAD applications.
 The .bak (drawing backup), .dws (drawing standards), .dwt (drawing template) and .sv$ (temporary automatic save) files are also DWG files.
 The DWG format is probably the most widely used format for CAD drawings. Autodesk estimates that in 1998 there were in excess of two billion DWG files in existence.
 DWG files are compatible with lots of 3D drawing and CAD programs, which makes it easy to transfer drawings between programs. In today scenario dump trucks are used to transportation of materials till now they are operating by hydraulic cylinders.The hydraulic cylinders used for the dump truck tilting system are very long so that it can be lifted to a good height. It also requires a cylinder with greater diameter so that is can bear the weight of the materials in the truck. This
requires a large space to house the cylinder and also the cylinder is prone to damages as it has to bear heavy loads.
This not only occupies more space, but also increases the weight of the vehicle, which indirectly affects the fuel economy of the truck. Thus there is a surge to find
possible methods for improving the mechanism of the dump truck hydraulics.This project proposes the idea of using a folding mechanism coupled with pneumatics to tilt the trolley of the dump truck. The system employs the use of a linkage hinged to together and a pneumatic cylinder is attached to the hinge. Thus when the pneumatic cylinder works in the forward direction, the linkages are stretched and when it is made to return, the linkages get folded up.

Introduction

The hydraulic cylinders used for the dump truck tilting system are very long so that it can be lifted to a good height. Thus when the pneumatic cylinder works in
the forward direction, the linkages ate stretched and when it is made to return, the linkages get folded up.

Proposed model:
This project proposes the idea of using a folding mechanism coupled with pneumatics to tilt the trolley of the dump truck.A dump truck or trailer for hauling and
dumping dry bulk solids conventionally by gravity and also having the capability of conveying the solids upward to a storage facility. The unit includes a container mounted to a frame on wheels. A hydraulic ram tilts the container for dumping through a rear outlet. A pneumatic conveyor is carried by the frame with an intake at the rear of the container. A gate allows the solids to be dumped conventionally by gravity, or to be blown to a storage facility by the pneumatic conveyor.

Details of Components Used

• Hand Lever solenoid valve Solenoid valve
• Flow control valve
• Hose and connectors
• Linkages
• Tilt-able Trolley
• Frame

Construction:
Our proposed model ―MODIFIED DUMP TRUCK TILTING SYSTEM need so many raw materials which are mentioned in above chapter. For that materials first of all we purchased the raw materials based upon requirement and for that we‘ve planned to how to buy. After bought we cut raw materials in required dimensions in precise manner by using hand wheel cutting machine. After that we‘ve gone for some rough turning and finishing by using lathe and grinding machines.
After that for assembly purpose we went for welding for permanent joint wherever we require and joined with rivets wherever we require rigidly fixed joints. Up to this, mechanical operations and assembly had done the main thing is need to give connections of pneumatic cylinders to the our model at the last time we had given connections to the pneumatic cylinder and solenoid valve, thereafter we joined that pneumatic cylinder to tilting truck to perform it‘s function on tilting truck.

Working principle

The system employs the use of a linkage hinged to together and a pneumatic cylinder is attached to the hinge. Thus when the pneumatic cylinder works in
the forward direction, the linkages at stretched and when it is made to return, the linkages get folded up.Hand lever solenoid valve get the air and passed through the pneumatic cylinder depend upon the hand lever directional changed. The linkages are those that support the trolley against the frame and they are hinged at the center.

Advantage And Application

Advantage:
• Free from wear adjustment.
• Less power consumption
• Less skill technicians is sufficient to operate.
• It gives simplified very operation.
• Installation is simplified very much.
• Less time and more profit.
• Reduced stroke length of cylinder
• Reduced cost in pneumatics
• Simple construction
• Reduced weight of the system.
• Ease of operation

Applications:
• It can be used for dump trucks.
• It can be used in factories for tilting large equipment
Design and Fabrication Of Drum Truck Tilting System
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/DESIGN-AND-FABRICATION-OF-DUMP-TRUCK-TILTING-SYSTEM-300x288.jpg
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

« PREV Page 1 … Page 195 Page 196 Page 197 Page 198 Page 199 … Page 338 NEXT »

About Us

LearnMech.Com is a Mechanical Project-oriented platform run by Sachin Thorat who is a B-Tech Graduate in Mechanical Engineering.
