Most of the material is made available by our college. The sub-components we could easily manufacture in our college work- shop. It’s manufacturing price is also less. This project gives us knowledge, experience , skill and new ideas of manufacturing. It is a working project and having guarantee of success. This project is the equipment useful to improve the quality of the gear being manufactured and can be made in less time, hence we have selected this project.

Operation:

To operate the cam hammer machine, electric motor, which is having 1440 rpm with the operating voltage of 250V A.C. in single phase with the continuous rating. It’s horse power is 0.5 is used to rotate the cam shaft on which the pair of cam is installed. As the camshaft and cam rotates, it raises the follower plate along with it during its rise period.

Cam Operated Hammer, Bending machine

The follower plate being installed on the ram shaft raises the ram along with it. As the cam reaches it’s maximum height its down of fall period suddenly starts loosing its contact with the follower plate and the ram is suddenly lowered down with an impact on the table plate. The job along with the required die is kept on the table is exerted with the impact loading deforming it to the desired shape.

The rise of cam and follower and the stiffness of the retaining determines the intensity of the impact exerted on the job. If the speed of the operation of the cam increases the molecules of the material of the job-components finds no time to retain and this will help in obtaining the deformed shape and size due to easily recovery of plastic stage rather the elastic stage. Thus the rpm i.e. the speed of operation of the cam plays an vital role in the forging operation. As the stiffness of the spring is increased the intensity of the impact loading also goes on increasing.

Following Operations can be performed On this Machine

1) Shearing:

In shearing operation as the punch upon the metal, the pressure exerted by the push files cause the plastic deformation of metal. Since the clearance between the push and die is very small, the plastic deformation take place in localized area and the metal adjacent to the cutting edges of the punch and die edges becomes highly stressed, which causes the fracture to start on both sides of the sheet as the deformation progresses. When the ultimate strength at the material is reached as a punch continues to descend the fracture meets at the center of the plate. The metals now completely sheared from the sheet and drops down through and die opening.

2) Blanking:

Blanking is the operation of cutting out flat areas to some desired shape. Blanking is usually the first step in series of operations. The metal punched out is the required production in blanking. For blanking the shear angle is given on the die.

3) Punching:

Punching operations differs from blanking in that, in punching the metal removed per punch usually much less than that removed by blanking. Secondly the shear angle is on the punch and the metal removed is scrap.

4) Piercing:

Piercing is the operation of producing a number of eventually spaced holes in a regular pattern on the sheet metal.

5) Notching:

It is the operation of removal of metal to the desired shape from the edge of the plate. It is similar to punching and piercing.

6) Slitting:

It is the operation of cutting a sheet metal in a straight line long the length.

7) Lancing:

It consists of cutting the sheet of metal through small length and then bending this cut portion. The cutting and lancing operations are shown below:

8) Forming:

It is the operation of bending a sheet of metal along a curved axis, such as U-shapes.

9) Drawing:

It is the operation of bending a sheet of producing cup shaped parts from flat sheet metal blanks by bending and plastic flow of metal.

Its special features are:

It applies the accuracy up to 1 micron.
It is light in weight and hence it is portable.
Weight of machine is 60 kg.(approx.)
It requires very low maintenance. Also its setting time is less.
It requires very low floor space area.
Its manufacturing cost is also very low.
It requires low power for its operations hence it can be excited using d.c. power and d.c. motor (also to be used in remote areas also).
It is compact. Total length of machine is 1200 mm.
 Stroke length = 200mm(max)
 Impact = 500kg(max)
 Approximate weight = 60kg.
 Operating torque required = 373 N-m.

More Resources /articles
Machine Shop Projects List , Abstract
Design and Fabrication projects - Abstract , Report Download
New Mechanical Projects 2020 ( All Projects Post Index List )

Cam Operated Hammer, Bending machine
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Inversions Of Single slider Crack mechanism-Rotary, Pendulum, Quick return Mechanism

Inversions Of Single slider Crack mechanism-Rotary, Pendulum, Quick return Mechanism

Inversions Of Single slider Crack mechanism

It may be used for transmitting or transforming motion e.g. engine indicators, typewriters, etc.
A mechanism with four links is known as a simple mechanism, and the mechanism with more than four links is known as a compound mechanism. When a mechanism is required to transmit power or to do some particular type of work, it then becomes a machine. In such cases, the various links or elements have to be designed to withstand the forces (both static and kinetic) safely.

A little consideration will show that a mechanism may be regarded as a machine in which each part is reduced to the simplest form to transmit the required motion.
Single Slider Crank Chain
A single slider crank chain is a modification of the basic four-bar chain. It consist of one sliding pair and three turning pairs. It is, usually, found in reciprocating steam engine mechanism. This type of mechanism converts rotary motion into reciprocating motion and vice versa. In a single slider crank chain, as shown the links 1 and 2, links 2 and 3, and links 3 and 4 form three turning pairs while the links 4 and 1 form a sliding pair.

Single Slide mechanism

Link 1 corresponds to the frame of the engine, which is fixed. The link 2 corresponds to the crank; link 3 corresponds to the connecting rod and link 4 corresponds to cross-head. As the crank rotates, the cross-head reciprocates in the guides and thus the piston reciprocates in the cylinder.
INVERSION:
We have already discussed that when one of the links is fixed in a kinematic chain, it is called a mechanism. So we can obtain as many mechanisms as the number of links in a kinematic chain by fixing, in turn, different links in a kinematic chain. This method of obtaining different mechanisms by fixing different links in a kinematic chain is known as inversion of the mechanism.
Inversion Definition :
When one of the links is fixed in a kinematic chain, it is called a mechanism. So we can obtain as many mechanisms as the number of links in a kinematic chain by fixing, in turn, different links in a kinematic chain. This method of obtaining different mechanisms by fixing different links in a kinematic chain is known as inversion of the mechanism.
Or
A Mechanism is a Kinematic Chain with one Fixed Link. The Fixed Link is called Frame. Different Mechanism is obtained by fixing different link in a kinematic chain. The process of choosing the different links in a kinematic chain for the frame is known as Inversion. Thus by fixing one by one links of the mechanism, we can obtain the inversion.

It may be noted that the relative motions between the various links are not changed in any manner through the process of inversion, but their absolute motions (those measured concerning the fixed link) may be changed drastically.
Types of inversion
1. Four bar chain or quadric cycle chain

 Beam engine
 Coupling rod of locomotive
 Watt’s indicator mechanism

2. The duplex pump which is used to supply feed water to boilers have two pistons attached to link 1, as shown in Fig.

Pendulum Engine

2) Oscillating Cylinder Engine;

The arrangement of oscillating cylinder engine mechanism, as shown in Fig. is used to convert reciprocating motion into rotary motion. In this mechanism, the link 3 forming the turning pair is fixed. Link 3 corresponds to the connecting rod of a reciprocating steam engine mechanism. When the crank (link 2) rotates, the piston attached to the piston rod (link 1) reciprocates and the cylinder (link 4) oscillates about a pin pivoted to the fixed link at A.

oscillatory engine

Animation Of Oscillatory Engine :

3) Rotary Engine :

Sometimes back, rotary internal combustion engines were used in aviation. But nowadays gas turbines are used in its place. It consists of seven cylinders in one plane and all revolves about fixed center D, as shown in Fig. while the crank (link 2) is fixed. In this mechanism, when the connecting rod (link 4) rotates, the piston (link 3) reciprocates inside the cylinders forming link 1.

rotary engine inversion

4) Elliptical trammels:
It is an instrument used for drawing ellipses. This inversion is obtained by fixing the slotted plate (link 4). The fixed plate or link 4 has two straight grooves cut in it, at right angles to each other. The link 1 and link 3, are known as sliders and form sliding pairs with link 4. The link A B (link 2) is a bar that forms a turning pair with links 1 and 3.

elliptical trammels

5) Scotch yoke mechanism:

This mechanism is used for converting rotary motion into a reciprocating motion. The inversion is obtained by fixing either the link 1 or link 3. In this, link 1 is fixed. When the link 2 (which corresponds to crank) rotates about B as center, the link 4 (which corresponds to a frame) reciprocates. The fixed link 1 guides the frame.

Scotch yoke mechanism

Animation Of Scotch Yoke Mechanism :

6) Oldham’s coupling:

An Oldham’s coupling is used for connecting two parallel shafts whose axes are at a small distance apart. The shafts are coupled in such a way that if one shaft rotates, the other shaft also rotates at the same speed. This inversion is obtained by fixing the link 2, the shafts to be connected have two flanges (link 1 and link 3) rigidly fastened at their ends by forging.

oldhams coupling

Animation Of Oldham's Coupling :

6) Beam Engine :
Construction of Beam Engine:
A part of the mechanism of a beam engine (also known as crank and lever mechanism) which consists of four links. Crank AB Connected to link 3. Link 3 is connected to Link 4 which is the lever and centrally pivoted at point D. At the other end of the lever, the Piston rod is connected.
Working of Beam Engine:
In this mechanism, when the crank rotates about the fixed center A, the lever oscillates about a fixed center D. The end E of the lever CDE is connected to a piston rod which reciprocates due to the rotation of the crank. In other words, the purpose of this mechanism is to convert rotary motion into reciprocating motion.

beam engine

Animation Of Beam Engine :

7. Whitworth quick return motion mechanism.

This mechanism is mostly used in shaping and slotting machines. In this mechanism, the link CD (link 2) forming the turning pair is fixed, as shown in Fig. Link 2 corresponds to a crank in a reciprocating steam engine. The driving crank CA (link 3) rotates at a uniform angular speed. The slider (link 4) attached to the crank pin at A slides along the slotted bar PA (link 1) which oscillates at a pivoted point D. The connecting rod PR carries the ram at R to which a cutting tool is fixed. The motion of the tool is constrained along the line RD produced, i.e. along a line passing through D and perpendicular to CD. from the position DP1 to DP2) through an angle α in the clockwise direction, the tool moves from the left-hand end of its stroke to the right-hand end through a distance 2 PD. Now when the driving crank moves from the position CA2 to CA1 (or the link DP from DP2 to DP1 ) through an angle β in the clockwise direction, the tool moves back from the right-hand end of its stroke to the left-hand end.

Whitworth quick return mechanism

It is seen that the time taken during the left to right movement of the ram (i.e. during forward or cutting stroke) will be equal to the time taken by the driving crank to move from CA1 to CA2. Similarly, the time taken during the right to left movement of the ram (or during the idle or return stroke) will be equal to the time taken by the driving crank to move from CA2 to CA1.
Since the crank link CA rotates at uniform angular velocity therefore time taken during the cutting stroke (or forward stroke) is more than the time taken during the return stroke. In other words, the mean speed of the ram during cutting stroke is less than the mean speed during the return stroke.

Some questions related to Inversion of Mechanism asked in Gate, IES Exam :

A. It controls spring movements in both directions: when the spring is compressed and when it is extended, the amount of resistance needed in each direction is determined by the type of vehicle, the type of suspension, the location of the shock absorber in the suspension system and the position in which it is mounted. Shock absorbers are a critical product that determines an automobile's character not only by improving ride quality but also by functioning to control the attitude and stability of the automobile body. For a smooth and comfortable ride the disturbing forces should be eliminated or reduced considerably by using some devices. Shock absorbers are such devices which isolate the vibrations by absorbing some disturbing energy themselves. Of the many types telescopic shocks are widely used which has got the draw back that the flow of oil in the cylinder can cause foam of oil and air to form. These limit the optimum throughout of the flow in the valves. Gas shocks represent an advance over traditional shocks. Nitrogen filled gas shock absorbers are the results of years of extensive research and development with top flight shock design engineers. They are designed for both lowered and stock vehicles to provide shock absorbers that would out perform anything on the market today. Nitro
shock absorbers are high quality, nitrogen filled shocks designed and gas charged specifically for each vehicle application. The addition of nitrogen under pressure limits the foaming effect and increases efficiency.

PRINCIPLE OF OPERATION

The damping mechanism of a shock absorber is viscous damping. Viscosity is the property of a fluid by virtue of which it offers resistance to the motion of one layer over the adjacent on. The main components of a viscous damper are cylinder, piston and viscous fluid. There is a clearance between the cylinder walls and the piston. More the clearance more will be the velocity of the piston in the viscous fluid and it will offer less value of viscous damping coefficient. The basic system is shown below. The damping force is opposite to the direction of velocity.

SHOCK ABSORBER ACTION

Shock absorbers develop control or resistance by forcing fluid through restricted passages. A cross-sectional view of a typical shock absorber is shown below. Its main components and working is also given below.

Nitro Shock Absorber Working

The upper mounting is attached to a piston rod. The piston rod is attached to a piston and rebound valve assembly. A rebound chamber is located above the piston and a compression chamber below the piston. These chambers are full of hydraulic fluid. A compression intake valve is positioned in the bottom of the cylinder and connected hydraulically to a reserve chamber also full of hydraulic fluid. The lower mounting is attached to the cylinder tube in which the piston operates.

During compression, the movement of the shock absorber causes the piston to move downward with respect to the cylinder tube, transferring fluid from the compression chamber to the rebound chamber. This is accomplished by fluid moving through the outer piston hole and unseating the piston intake valve.

During rebound, the pressure in the compression chamber falls below that of the reserve chamber. As a result, the compression valve will unseat and allow fluid to flow from the reserve chamber into the compression chamber. At the same time, fluid in the rebound chamber will be transferred into the compression chamber through the inner piston holes and the rebound valve.

WHY GAS FILLED SHOCK ABSORBERS?

The rapid movement of the fluid between the chambers during the rebound and compression strokes can cause foaming of the fluid. Foaming is the mixing of free air and the shock fluid. When foaming occurs, the shock develops a lag because the piston is moving through an air pocket that offers up resistance. The foaming results in a decrease of the damping forces and a loss of spring control.
During the movement of the piston rod, the fluid id forced through the valuing of the piston. When the piston rod is moving quickly, the shock absorbers oil cannot get through the valuing fast enough, which causes pressure increases in front of the piston and pressure decreases behind the piston. The result is foaming and a loss of shock absorber control. The need for a gas filled shock absorber arises here.

TYPES OF GAS FILLED SHOCK ABSORBERS

Twin– tube with low pressure gas.
Single- tube with high pressure gas.

The main components are:

Outer tube, also called reservoir tube.
 Inner tube, also called cylinder
Piston connected to a piston rod
Bottom valve, also called foot valve
 Upper and lower attachment

ADVANTAGES OF NITRO SHOCKS

Instantaneous response :

Because the high pressure eliminates aeration (foaming), action is always is immediate.
The low mass of gas and the single tube further improves response time.

Better fade resistance :

Since there is no outer tube, cooling is much better which gives a drastic reduction in fade. Thus more consistent handling and control.

Better durability :

Single-tube construction also allows for a larger internal working area, reducing stress and fatigue for better durability.
De Carbon’s mono disc valving system features a single moving part that drastically reduces inertia and friction, to improve durability and performance.
Better cooling of the mono tube design results in lower operating temperatures and thus longer life.

No need for re-adjustment:

The viscosity of hydraulic fluid changes as temperature changes. This may because of climate, season (summer/winter) or heavy duty (motorway cruising).
The high pressure gas compensates immediately and automatically for changes in viscosity.

Download

1) Seminar On Nitro Shock Absorbers free PDF Download

2) Seminar Presentation On Nitro Shock Absorbers free Ppt Download
Seminar On Nitro Shock Absorbers free PDF Download
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Mechanical Drives- Belt, Chain, Gear | Advantages and Disadvantages

Mechanical Drives- Belt, Chain, Gear | Advantages and Disadvantages

Mechanical Drives- Belt, Chain, Gear | Advantages, and Disadvantages

Available energy/power is required to be transmitted to get the desired motion and work. When the power is transmitted from input to output using mechanical elements is known as mechanical power transmission. Mechanical elements like friction disc, various types of belts, rope, chain, gears, couplings, etc. are used for power transmission.
BELT DRIVE :
To transmit power from one shaft to another, pulleys are mounted on the two shafts. The pulleys are then connected by an endless belt passing over the pulleys. The connecting belt is kept in tension so that motion of one pulley is transferred to the other without slip. The speed of the driven shaft can be varied by varying the diameter of the two pulleys.

The amount of power transmitted depends upon the following factors
1. The velocity of belt.
2. The tension under which belt is placed on pulleys.
3. The arc of contact between the belt and the smaller pulley.

Belt drives are one of the common methods used whenever power or rotary motion is required to transmit between two parallel shafts.

Types of Belt drive

 Open belt drive
 Cross belt drive
 Quarter turn belt drive
 Belt drive with idler pulley
 Fast and loose pulley drive
 Cone pulley drive
 Compound belt drive

belt drive

Advantages and Disadvantages of belt drives :

Made from flexible material, it can be used for
the shafts whose axes are note parallel.
 The initial cost is low.
 Lubricant is not required.
 Noise is relatively less.
It is a flexible member, it slips or breaks during
overload and safeguards the machine.

Disadvantages Of Belt Drive;

Drive is not positive as the belt slip over the pulleys.
 Oqupies relatively more space.
Speed ration can not be maintained because of the slipping of the belt.
Adjust the tension in the belt is require time to time.
 Life is relatively low

ROPE DRIVE :
When the center distance between the driver and driven shaft is very large and higher power is required to be transmitted, rope drives are used. Here instead of a belt, wire rope is used. Appropriate size and number of grooves are provided on the pulley rim. e.g elevator/lift, overhead crane, hoist, ropeway, etc.

Rope Drive Example

Advantages Of Rope Drive:

Large power can be transmitted by using no. of ropes.
 Easy and simple maintenance.
More than one drive can be accommodated from the single pulley.
 Silent drive.
Because of wedging action due to groove, the higher coefficient of friction compared to flat belt drive.
Due to flexibility in the rope little misalignment in the drive is permissible.

Disadvantages of Rope Drive:

 Power loss due to slip.
 Oqupies larger space.
Constant speed ratio can not be maintained.
Adjustment in the center distance is always necessary.
Wear rates for the wire rope pulleys is higher
The initial cost is relatively higher.

CHAIN DRIVE :
The chain drive consists of three elements – driving sprocket, driven sprocket, and endless chain wrapped around the sprocket as shown in fig. Pin joint contains, pin, bush, and roller to minimize the friction and such chains are known as
roller bush chains. The chain drive is a positive drive where there is no slip & constant velocity ratio can be maintained. In such a case, the power transmission capacity depends on the friction between surfaces of two discs.
Therefore, this method is not suitable for transmitting higher power as a slip occurs between the discs

Types Of Gear Drives :

 Spur gear
 Helical gear
 Rack and Pinion gear
 Bevel gear
 Worm and worm wheel
 Spiral gear

See also: Types Of Gears, Material Used For Gears, Design Specification and Application

gear drives

Advantages and disadvantages of gear drive :

Advantages Of Gear Drive:

Positive drive and has more efficiency than belt and rope drive.
The operation of the drive is simple and effective.
Life is more compared to other drives.
With one input speed, no. of output speeds can be obtained by using a suitable gear drive.
 Safe and compact.
 Constant velocity ration is obtained.
Using different types of gears, power can be transmitted between shafts whose axes are parallel, inclined, or intersecting to each other.

Disadvantages of Gear Drive:

If the tooth geometry of the gear is not properly maintained, the drive may get locked.
Not preferred when very high-speed transmission is required.
If the lubrication arrangement is not provided, it may produce noise.

See also: 19 Methods Of Manufacturing Of all types of Gears
Difference between Belt Drives, Chain Drives, and Gear Drives

Sr. No.ParticularsBelt driveChain driveGear drive

1.Main element Pulleys, beltSprockets, chainGears

2.SlipSlip may occursNo slip
(Positive drive)No slip
(Positive drive)

3.SuitabilityFor large center distanceFor moderate center distanceFor short center distance

4.Space requiresLargeModerateLess

5. The outdoor unit is installed on or near the wall outside of the room or space that you wish to cool. The unit houses the compressor, condenser coil and the expansion coil or capillary tubing. The sleek-looking indoor unit contains the cooling coil, a long blower and an air filter.

Split air conditioners are used for small rooms and halls, usually in places where window air conditioners cannot be installed. However, these days many people prefer split air conditioner units even for places where window air conditioners can be fitted.

There are two main parts of the split air conditioner. These are:

Outdoor unit: This unit houses important components of the air conditioner like the compressor, condenser coil and also the expansion coil or capillary tubing. This unit is installed outside the room or office space which is to be cooled. The compressor is the maximum noise making part of the air conditioner, and since in the split air conditioner, it is located outside the room, the major source of noise is eliminated. In the outdoor unit there is a fan that blows air over the condenser thus cooling the compressed Freon gas in it. This gas passes through the expansion coil and gets converted into low pressure, low temperature partial gas and partial liquid Freon fluid.

2) Indoor unit: It is the indoor unit that produces the cooling effect inside the room or the office. This is a beautiful looking tall unit usually white in color, though these days a number of stylish models of the indoor unit are being launched. The indoor unit houses the evaporator coil or the cooling coil, a long blower and the filter. After passing from the expansion coil, the chilled Freon fluid enters the cooling coil. The blower sucks the hot, humid and filtered air from the room and it blows it over the cooling coil. As the air passes over cooling coil its temperature reduces drastically and also loses the excess moisture. The cool and dry air enters the room and maintains comfortable conditions of around 25-27 degree Celsius as per the requirements.

Split Cooling Unit
Split Cooling Unit consist of three heat exchangers. The temperature of water of the Evaporative cooler decreases gradually after starting the cooler. This cooled water is supplied to the Split Cooling Unit. When the air passes through the heat exchanger, it losses its heat and cooled air of 25oC is supplied to the room without increasing its humidity. This unit can be used in non coastal region.

modified split cooling unit free download project report mechanical

CONCLUSION AND FUTURE SCOPE
The experimental investigation above confirmed that split unit demonstrated reasonable potential for use as a wetted media in evaporative cooling systems. Consequently, it creates the possibility of new sustainable engineering systems where either cooling or humidifying is required. As the unit maintain the temperature 25°c and it has low cost than AC so it will be good replacement for AC..
For the future modifications, if the density of the split unit is reduced then we can achieve better performance than that achieved. Also we can increase the thickness of the pad to achieve good performance.

Calculation and Design , experimental procedure is given in the report which is Submitted by Mr.Chetan Sonwane.

MODIFIED AIR COOLER WITH SPLIT COOLING REPORT DOWNLOAD in pdf

About Author:

This Project is Done by Mr. Chetan Sonawane.
He is Mechanical Engineer and Done Modification in Split cooling System .
You can Contact him on chetan.sonawane7373@gmail.com
(more…)
MODIFIED AIR COOLER WITH SPLIT COOLING REPORT DOWNLOAD
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/06/modifiedsplitcoolingunitfreedownloadprojectreportmechanical-208x300.jpg
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

« PREV Page 1 … Page 266 Page 267 Page 268 Page 269 Page 270 … Page 338 NEXT »

About Us

LearnMech.Com is a Mechanical Project-oriented platform run by Sachin Thorat who is a B-Tech Graduate in Mechanical Engineering.
