The term limit switch is derived from the operation of the device it-self. As an object (or target) makes contact with the operator of the switch, it eventually moves the actuator to the "limit" where the electrical contacts change state.

A limit switch is an electromechanical device that consists of an actuator mechanically linked to a set of contacts. When an object comes into contact with the actuator, the device operates the contacts to make or break an electrical connection.

Mechanical Limit Switches :

Mechanical limit switches typically consist of a mounted actuator arm that operates a set of a electrical contacts when the arm is displaced.
Types Of Mechanical limit Switches :
Two examples are shown in illustrates the operation of a Lever-type limit switch and illustrates a plunger, or push-type, limit switch.

Working Of Limit Switches :

In the case of the lever type, the actuator arm is a rod connected to a lever shaft, which is free to rotate when the rod is displaced. When the forces displacing the rod are removed, the lever shaft is returned to its normal position by a return spring. The lever shaft has a roller mounted on its bottom, which rotates a rocker as it changes position from right side to left side. This mechanical action operates one or more sets of contacts, which are mounted on the other side of the limit switch, as shown in the back view. The rocker shaft is connected through the housing to the contact lever assembly, the head of which moves a set of electrical contacts. The electrical contact may either be closed or open initially. The action of the actuator and lever arms takes it from its normal, or deactivated, state to the other state. Hence, a normally open limit switch will be closed when activated and a normally closed limit switch will be open when activated.

Limit Switch Diagram :

types of mechanical limit switches

Figure b. illustrates the more direct action of a push-type limit switch. It shows a set of contacts operated from the contact lever assembly. Contact set a-b is normally closed; set c-d is normally open. When the lever is depressed, each contact goes to its opposite state. When installed, the user wires the appropriate contact pair back to the controller, which distinguishes the state of the system by sensing the presence of voltage or current supplied through the contact.

Limit switches come in several varieties and designs; Figure simply shows two concepts. They are designed for heavy-duty applications in which there is physical
contact between the actuator and the process being sensed. For example, limit switches are often used on machine tools to limit the travel of a machine axis. They are sometimes used in materials handling applications, e.g. to indicate the passage of a part along a conveyor. They are typically designed to handle relatively high voltages, both AC and DC. This means they cannot be directly wired to the input port of a computer without having their signal converted to TTL level.

Features and Benefits of Limit Switches

Can be used in almost any industrial environment
Very precise in terms of accuracy and repeatability
 Consume little electrical energy
Can switch loads with high inductance
 Can control multiple loads

Limitations of Limit Switches

Generally restricted to equipment operating at relatively low speeds.
Must make direct contact with target.
Moving mechanical parts will wear out.
Limit Switches Working Principles – Types of Limit Switches
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to What is Product Engineering – Role ,Duties ,Skills For Product Engineers

What is Product Engineering – Role ,Duties ,Skills For Product Engineers

What is Product Engineering - Role ,Duties ,Skills For Product Engineers

They are also responsible for transitioning the product from design to manufacturing at scale. Virtually every industry that involves manufacturing products for sale employs Product Engineers. Their work environment is typically on-site at a manufacturing plant or in the corporate office working on designs and meeting with stakeholders.

Product engineering refers to the process of designing and developing a device, assembly, or system such that it be produced as an item for sale through some production manufacturing process. Product engineering usually entails activity dealing with issues of cost, producibility, quality, performance, reliability, serviceability, intended lifespan and user features. These product characteristics are generally all sought in the attempt to make the resulting product attractive to its intended market and a successful contributor to the business of the organization that intends to offer the product to that market. It includes design, development and transitioning to manufacturing of the product. The term encompasses developing the concept of the product and the design and development of its mechanical, electronics and software components. After the initial design and development is done, transitioning the product to manufacture it in volumes is considered part of product engineering.

For example, the engineering of a digital camera would include defining the feature set, design of the optics, the mechanical and ergonomic design of the packaging, developing the electronics that control the various component and developing the software that allows the user to see the pictures, store them in memory and download them to a computer.

Product engineering is an engineering discipline that deals with both design and manufacturing aspects of a product.

product engineers
Product Engineer Duties and Responsibilities
Designing products and the processes to manufacture them at scale involves several duties and responsibilities. We read through several Product Engineer job descriptions to compile this list of the most common Product Engineer tasks.

Manage the Design of Products and Processes

Designing products and their processes for manufacturing is where a Product Engineer spends a good portion of time. This involves using Computer Aided Design (CAD) software to build digital models of product concepts.

Create and Test Product Prototypes

Once a digital model of a product is created, the Product Engineer then creates and tests product prototypes. This requires complex problem solving skills, as the initial build of a prototype is rarely a smooth process.

Select Materials for Product Manufacturing

The Product Engineer is in charge of sourcing the materials necessary to build a prototype, and then scale that prototype in a cost-effective manner. This process involves working closely with Logisticians and Shipping Managers.

Collaborate with Product Development Teams

Speaking of collaboration, a Product Engineer has to collaborate with the Product Development team to turn concepts into reality. Good communication skills are required here, as debates between departments can get heated.

Ensure Manufacturing is up to Specifications and Safety Standards

Safety is one of the Product Engineer’s primary concerns. They must ensure product design meets any and all safety regulations, and that goes for the manufacturing process as well.

Product Engineer Skills

It is easy to assume that the role of Product Engineer is all about technical skills. While having a high degree of technical skill is important, being a Product Engineer also requires several soft skills. The design process is iterative, meaning that we repeat the steps as many times as needed, making improvements along the way as we learn from failure and uncover new design possibilities to arrive at great solutions.

The engineering design process is a methodical series of steps that engineers use in creating functional products and processes. The process is highly iterative - parts of the process often need to be repeated many times before another can be entered - though the part(s) that get iterated and the number of such cycles in any given project may vary.

Read also: Introduction to machine Design | Types Of Machine Design
The steps of the engineering design process are to:

 Define the Problem
 Do Background Research
 Specify Requirements
 Brainstorm Solutions
 Choose the Best Solution
 Do Development Work
 Build a Prototype
 Test and Redesign

Steps In Engineering Design Process - Engineering Design

1. Define the Problem.

The engineering design process starts when you ask the following questions about problems that you observe:

What is the problem or need?
Who has the problem or need?
Why is it important to solve?

2. Do Background Research:

Learn from the experiences of others — this can help you find out about existing solutions to similar problems, and avoid mistakes that were made in the past. So, for an engineering design project, do background research in two major areas:

 Users or customers
 Existing solutions

3. Specify Requirements:

Design requirements state the important characteristics that your solution must meet to succeed. One of the best ways to identify the design requirements for your solution is to analyze the concrete example of a similar, existing product, noting each of its key features.

4. Brainstorm Solutions:

There are always many good possibilities for solving design problems. If you focus on just one before looking at the alternatives, it is almost certain that you are overlooking a better solution. Good designers try to generate as many possible solutions as they can.

5. Choose the Best Solution:

Look at whether each possible solution meets your design requirements. Some solutions probably meet more requirements than others. Reject solutions that do not meet the requirements.

6. Develop the Solution:

Development involves the refinement and improvement of a solution, and it continues throughout the design process, often even after a product ships to customers.

7. Build a Prototype:

A prototype is an operating version of a solution. Often it is made with different materials than the final version, and generally it is not as polished. Prototypes are a key step in the development of a final solution, allowing the designer to test how the solution will work.

8. Test and Redesign:

The design process involves multiple iterations and redesigns of your final solution. You will likely test your solution, find new problems, make changes, and test new solutions before settling on a final design.

9. Communicate Results:

To complete your project, communicate your results to others in a final report and/or a display board. Professional engineers always do the same, thoroughly documenting their solutions so that they can be manufactured and supported.
Steps In Engineering Design Process – Engineering Design
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Steps-In-Engineering-Design-Process-Engineering-Design-300x222.png
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Engine Seized -What happens when an engine gets seized

Engine Seized -What happens when an engine gets seized

Engine Seized - What happens when an engine gets seized

This is caused by heat most times the car has been run low or out of oil. The parts that have seized or melted together could be main or rod bearings, piston rings etc. If the engine will not turn over by hand it probably time for a complete rebuild or a new engine.

Generally, there is a thin layer of oil between the piston and the inside wall of the cylinder for lubrication purposes. When this dries out, the bearings”spin”. This causes Engine Seizure.

Another likely reason for engine seizures are due to driving through water which leads to "Hydrostatic lock". In this situation, water enters the space between the piston and the cylinder, and since fluids are “incompressible” in nature, the piston while trying to compress water either leads to bent con rods, sheared cylinder heads, blown crank cases or even bent broken crank shafts. Depending on the damage magnitude it is decided whether original block and cylinder head will work or not. If its a crack, blown case engine needs to be replaced, if only con rod has bent then you can do away with only sets of new con rod, pistons and bearings but of course, crank shaft conditions and cylinder head and crank case planes need to be checked for perfect alignment before repairing.

Engine Seized -What happens when an engine gets seized
What happens when an engine gets seized
What is Scoring :

To understand what is seizure and what causes it ,one must first understand what is scoring. Between the piston and the cylinder walls there is always a presence of oil film(lubricating oil) that avoids the metal to metal contact. Now consider a situation when an oil film is temporarily missing. This causes a metal to metal contact and a scraping sort of action takes place. Now this causes little lining indents in the cylinder walls. The problem is not a performance robber until the oil film is resumed shortly. The above is a condition called scoring.

Now consider the same situation only difference being the oil lubrication does not resume and this scraping continues for some time. After only a few strokes the piston and the cylinder wall start to draw material from each other.Imagine this metal drawn as a small ball which continues to grow with every continuing stroke. Then there is a time when it is significantly large enough to push the piston the other side generating large pressure on the opposite side of the wall where scoring initally took place till scoring starts at the other end of the piston as well. Now all this happens when your engine is running at its normal speeds. The final blow happens when this molten aluminium iron mix of ball accumulated due to metal drawn from piston and cylinder wall finds its way to cylinder ring and accumulates there. This is what causes seizure and the crankshaft motion is stopped.

There could be many reasons why seizure can take place. Some being improper lubrication or dirt logging in the lubrication system. Other could be improper clearance between the piston and the cylinder walls. Some other reasons could also include improper heat dissipation from the cylinder and piston walls causing them to expand and change clearances.
Engine Seized -What happens when an engine gets seized
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/04/Engine-Seized-What-happens-when-an-engine-gets-seized-300x223.jpg
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to What Is Shot Blasting – Shot Blasting machine types

What Is Shot Blasting – Shot Blasting machine types

What Is Shot Blasting - Shot Blasting machine types

Shot blasting is method through which it is possible to obtain excellent cleaning and surface preparation for secondary finishing operations.

Shot blasting is commonly used for:

The cleaning of iron, steel, non-cast parts, forgings, etc.
Mechanical cleaning of sheets, rods, coils, wire, etc.
Shot peening to alter mechanical properties (increasing resistance to fatigue for springs, gears, etc.)
Preparing surfaces to be painted, coated, etc.

In general shot blasting concentrates abrasive particles at high speed (65-110 m/second) in a controlled manner at the material thereby removing surface contaminates due to the abrasive impact.

Initially in the 1930’s the shotblasting process used compressed air for propelling the steel shot. This method remains in use today for cleaning metal frames and weldments.

blast production lines, both manual and automated systems, became possible with the introduction of centrifugal wheel blast machines. The system of shot blasting by centrifugal wheel is more productive than by compressed air and achieves a better more uniform surface finish.

The criteria used for selecting the type of shot blasting system depends on the size and shape of the parts, the condition of the surface to be cleaned, final surface finish specification and overall process required.

Read Also: Seminar | Shot Peening Full report and PPT Download
Shot blasting Machine feature /parts Includes :
1. Abrasive delivery method:

 By Compressed Air.
 By Centrifugal turbines.

2. Abrasive recovery and cleaning.
3. Dust collection.
4. Blast Cabinet.
5. Part movement and support system.
6. Controls and instrumentation.

1 . Abrasive delivery method:

There are two ways of accelerating the steel shot:
By compressed air:
This system is suitable for lower production applications where maximum flexibility is needed.
These systems are very flexible in that the shot can be delivered horizontally through a rubber hose and nozzle assembly. This enables uses in finishing operations of steel frames and weldments thereby replacing hand tools. Because of this, an air blasting machine for a production line is expensive compared to the centrifugal wheel blasting machine.

sand blasting process

 By centrifugal turbine:
Centrifugal wheel blasting is the more common blast cleaning technique as well as the most economical and environmentally friendly method.
The turbine delivers abrasive shot by centrifugal force in a specific and controlled direction, speed and quantity.
Function of the turbine is similar to that of a fan or centrifugal pump. Shot blasting machines may use one or a multitude of turbines positioned in such a way that the abrasive blast pattern covers the entire surface of the material to be shot cleaned.
The shape and size of the parts determine the number of turbines used in a machine. Power of the turbine motor is based on degree of cleaning needed and throughout speed of the material.

Shot Blasting: Types of Shot Used

While shot blasting primarily refers to blasting the surface with small steel pellets or shots, many other types of shot blast materials are also used. Here we will take a look at some of the commonly used shots –

Steel Shots – Here, small steel balls of diameter 1 to 6 mm are fired at high speed against the surface being prepared. The size of the balls determines the finishing achieved. Smaller steel shots are used for more polished surface, while larger ones lead to a rougher finish.
Chilled Iron Grit – These are angular, abrasive material used for general blast cleaning, i.e., for removing oxides and paints from ferrous castings and carbon steel. However, blasting with chilled iron grit is quite aggressive and therefore not suitable for softer metals like aluminium.
Steel Grit – Blasting with steel grit is used for jobs where aggressive cleaning is required, such as for removing contaminants from steel or any other metal.

2. Abrasive Recovery and cleaning system.
Recirculation and cleaning the abrasive shot is required to maintain a consistent cleaning operation. In conventional shot blasting equipment after the shot hits the part the abrasive falls into the collection hopper under the machine.
The shot is then carried by gravity or screw conveyor to a bucket elevator. The elevator carries the shot, removed oxides and other contaminates to an air wash separator located in the upper portion of the machine. A combination of baffles, strainers and plates separate these contaminates which are ineffective during the shot blast operation. The cleaned abrasive is contained in an upper hopper (feeding-box) and is subsequently fed into the shot turbine by gravity.

3. Dust Collection

The machine cabinet contains dust and abrasive. A machine mounted dust collector, reduces air pressure inside the machine thereby preventing dust from escaping into the shop environment. Material access openings in the entrance and exit of the shot blaster must be designed and protected to prevent abrasive spillage.

4. Dust collector system

Dust produced during shot blasting is withdrawn from the machinery cabinet and continuously recirculating abrasive by a dust collector. Typical dust collector design uses baffle filters or cartridges.
The dust collector not only evacuates dust within the machine but also keeps the surrounding area clean and dust free. Changes in airflow will reduce collector efficiency and therefore result in lower dust extraction, loss of the cleaning power, and contribute to dust in the immediate production area. A properly designed and sized dust collector is therefore critical to the ongoing performance of the shot blasting System.

5. System for holding and transporting parts for shot blasting

Handling and transporting parts through the shot blast process will depend on several factors.

For materials in large quantities (brake, pulleys, screwdrivers, etc.) tumblast machines are used. For larger and heavier pieces, (motor blocks, bicycles frames, bunch-welded parts, etc.) spinner hanger machines are used.

For the shot peening of gears and other special components, tables and multi tables machines are used.
What Is Shot Blasting – Shot Blasting machine types
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Types Of HVAC Systems and Their Advantages

Types Of HVAC Systems and Their Advantages

Types Of HVAC Systems and Their Advantages

The sole purpose of Hvac systems is to make the indoor climate comfortable. Currently there are 7 different types of Hvac systems available. These 7 types of HVAC systems come in different sizes and specifications to suit your requirement
The HVAC systems can be broadly divided into seven categories depending on its sizes and specifications.
1. THE SPLIT HVAC :
What is it?
Well, you will find the components of this HVAC unit situated on both inside and outside of the building. It comprises of air conditioning unit, ducts, thermostat, and the evaporator coils. The optional components are like humidifiers, UV lamps, and the air cleaners.

split air conditioner Diagram

Advantages-
a) This will give you the best and effective cooling and heating.
b) This can be easily installed.
c) This can be operated in a hassle-free way.
d) This can cool down and heat up your room very easily.
2. THE HYBRID SYSTEM :-
What is it?
If you want an alternative for energy-efficiency, then this can be an option. This system works the same as a gas furnace when fitted with a heat pump. It comprises of the heat pump, evaporator coils, refrigerant, and furnaces. This helps in controlling the entire system.

Advantages-
a) Hybrid systems are important when you require enormous heating in the winter season.
b) This system will warm up your room and not add much to your utility bills.
3. DUCT-FREE SPLIT SYSTEM :
What is it?
This system will provide you good installations for the areas which are unable to accommodate the conventional systems with ducts. The components included in this duct-free system are an air conditioner, a heat pump, a control panel completed with the thermostat and wires, tubing, a fan coil which is compact.

Advantages-
a) You will need this system for warming up and cooling down various areas of your home continuously.
b) This will provide you with the utility rebates and tax credits for installing a duct-free system.
c) This is a cost-saving system.
4. PACKAGED HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM :
What is it?
The packaged system units are widely used in the confined spaces which include all the rooms throughout the house. It comprises of a heat pump/air conditioner with a fan coil/evaporator, and a control system supplied with a thermostat.

PACKAGED HEATING AND AIR CONDITIONING SYSTEM

Advantages-
a) Here you will get the heater and the air conditioner rolled into one. This will result in saving your money and space.
b) This comes as a savior for the people who stay in an area that is prone to extreme climatic conditions.
5. THE WINDOW AC SYSTEM :
What is it?
Just like the name suggests, this window ac system is installed in your windows. They can only cool down small areas and are unable to cool large areas or multiple rooms.

windows air conditioning system

Advantages-
a) The window ac can provide you with both heating and cooling.
b) The optional damper which is present in the unit can provide fresh air when needed.
6. THE HEAT PUMP -
What is it?
The heat pumps are quite similar to the cooling only systems. There is a special valve present inside the refrigeration piping that helps and allows the refrigeration cycle to operate in a reverse manner. In the colder days, these heat pumps need defrosting. During this time, the only way of heating the interior is the electric heater. They are manufactured in either packaged or split system.

heat pump hvac system

Advantages-
a) The heat pumps help in cooling the indoor air and with the reversal of the valve, your room gets heated.
7. THE CHILLED WATER SYSTEM :

What is it?
Here in this system, the liquid water is pumped throughout the building.
