The energy extracted from the exhaust gases is also utilized to drive the compressor. As the turbocharged engines, due to higher peak cylinder pressure, are more prone to detonation, the compression ratios have to be reduced, which reduces air standard efficiency.\r\n\r\n\r\nMoreover, the performance of the turbocharged engines is not improved at low engine speeds. As such their use in petrol engines is limited.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nHowever,they are extensively used in diesel engines due to following advantages:\r\n\r\n\r\n1. Power output of a given displacement engine is increased.\r\n2. Torque characteristic of the turbocharged engines is better.\r\n3.Turbocharged engines have more B.P. \/weight ratio, compared to mutually aspirated\u00a0engines.\r\n4.Power loss due to decrease in air density at higher attitudes is reduced by using\u00a0turbocharger.\r\n5. Reduced fuel consumption.\r\n6. Reduced noxious exhaust gas emissions.\r\nDifference Between Turbocharger and\u00a0Supercharger\u00a0:\r\nHowever, a turbo-charged engine requires good maintenance of engine oil, oil and air filters, as any dirt in oil and air can cause failures. Although the supercharger and turbocharger perform the same function, yet the difference lies in the power supply to drive the same. The supercharger is driven directly by the engine through a belt; as such the useful engine power gets reduced by that amount. On the other hand, there is no such power loss in case of a turbocharger which gets its driving power from exhaust gases only.\r\n\r\n\r\nPurpose of Turbocharger:\r\n\r\n1. To reduce weight per horse power of the engine as required in aero engines.\r\n2. To reduce the space occupied by the engine as required in marine engines\r\n3. To have better turbulence and this ensures more complete combustion giving greater power and low specific fuel\r\nconsumption.\r\n4. To improve volumetric efficiency of the engine at high altitudes as in aero engines and at high speeds as in racing cars.\r\n5. To maintain the power of a reciprocating IC engines even at high altitudes where less oxygen is available for combustion.\r\n6. The supercharger is normally activated on demand, when the accelerator pedal is pushed to the floor.\r\n7. A turbocharger is actually a small turbine, which uses exhaust gasses to spin a turbine wheel\u00a0mounted on a common\r\nshaft with a compressor.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nTurbocharger\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWorking of Turbocharger:\u00a0\r\n\r\nExhaust gasses from the engine flow along the exhaust manifold and through nozzle box assembly and enters into the blades of the gas turbine where the mechanical work is done by the gas turbine. \u0099 As the turbine turns at high speed, it causes the compressor to compress the atmospheric air incase of diesel engine or air fuel mixture in case of the petrol engine and enters the engine cylinder.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nworking of turbocharger\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIn both systems, air enters through an air intake, passes through an air cleaner, and travels through a duct (usually funnel shaped) to the compressor inlet portion of the turbocharger.\u0099From there air is forced through a diffuser into the intake manifold, to the individual cylinders. The most critical problem is controlling the manifold or boost pressure.\u00a0\r\n\r\nThis is the amount of additional boost or pressure created by the turbocharger. The boost must be controlled or the engine will begin to detonate and eventually burn holes in the pistons and self-destruct. The solution lies in the waste gate or safety valve, which is keyed to intake manifold pressure, exhaust pressure, or a combination of both. At a predetermined pressure, the waste gate valve will open, allowing some of the exhaust gas to pass directly into the exhaust system bypassing the turbocharger. This keeps the intake manifold pressure at a preset maximum.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe turbocharger itself spins at a maximum speed of about 110,000 rpm at highway speeds and is capable of supplying boost pressure of up to 60-70 psi (413-483kPa) on professional racing engines\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAdvantages of Turbo Chargers:\r\n\r\n1. Improved torque at low rpm in the case of diesel engines and over a whole speed range in the case of petrol engines.\r\n2. Better mixing of air and petrol in the case of petrol engine resulting in effective pollution control.\r\n3. The engine runs smoother and quieter\r\n4. Reduces diesel knock.\r\n5. Ease in starting from cold.\r\n6. Less smoke during low speed acceleration\r\n7. Improved horsepower in the case of both petrol and diesel engines.\r\n\r\nDisadvantages:\r\n\r\n1. Entails better cooling system\r\n2. Design becomes expensive and complicated\r\n3. So the testing machines are often equipped with the pendulum type lever, pressure gauge and hydraulic capsule and the stress Vs strain diagram is plotted which has the following shape.\r\n\r\nA typical tensile test curve for the mild steel has been shown below\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n\r\nStress Strain Curve For Ductile Materials\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSALIENT POINTS OF THE GRAPH:\r\n\u00a0\r\n(A) So it is evident form the graph that the strain is proportional to strain or elongation is proportional to the load giving a st.line relationship. This law of proportionality is valid upto a point A. or we can say that point A is some ultimate point when the linear nature of the graph ceases or there is a deviation from the linear nature. This point is known as the limit of proportionality or the proportionality limit.\r\n\r\n(B) For a short period beyond the point A, the material may still be elastic in the sense that the deformations are completely recovered when the load is removed.\r\nThe limiting point B is termed as Elastic Limit .\r\n\r\n(C) and (D) - Beyond the elastic limit plastic deformation occurs and strains are not totally recoverable. There will be thus permanent deformation or permanent set when load is removed. These two points are termed as upper and lower yield points respectively. The stress at the yield point is called the yield strength.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n(E) A further increase in the load will cause marked deformation in the whole volume of the metal. The maximum load which the specimen can with stand without failure is called the load at the ultimate strength.\r\n\r\nThe highest point \u2018E' of the diagram corresponds to the ultimate strength of a material.\r\nSu = Stress which the specimen can with stand without failure &amp; is known as Ultimate Strength or Tensile Strength.\r\nSu is equal to load at E divided by the original cross-sectional area of the bar.\r\n\r\n(F) Beyond point E, the bar begins to forms neck. The load falling from the maximum until fracture occurs at F. Beyond point E, the cross-sectional area of the specimen begins to reduce rapidly over a relatively small length of bar and the bar is said to form a neck. This necking takes place whilst the load reduces, and fracture of the bar finally occurs at point F.\r\n\r\n\r\nPercentage Elongation: 'd ':\r\nThe ductility of a material in tension can be characterized by its elongation and by the reduction in area at the cross section where fracture occurs. It is the ratio of the extension in length of the specimen after fracture to its initial gauge length, expressed in percentage.\r\n\r\nElongation = [ ( L1-lg ) \/L1 ]\r\n\r\nL1 = gauge length of specimen after fracture(or the distance between the gage marks at fracture)\r\nlg= gauge length before fracture(i.e. initial gauge length)\r\n\r\nFor 50 mm gage length, steel may here a % elongation d of the order of 10% to 40%.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nDuctile Materials:\r\nIt we just examine the earlier tension curve one can notice that the extension of the materials over the plastic range is considerably in excess of that associated with elastic loading. The Capacity of materials to allow these large deformations or large extensions without failure is termed as ductility. There is a system to generate power by converting the potential energy generated by a vehicle going up on a speed breaker into kinetic energy. When the vehicle moves over the inclined plates, it gains height resulting in increase in potential energy, which is wasted in a conventional rumble strip. When the breaker comes down, they crank a lever fitted to a ratchet-wheel type mechanism (a angular motion converter) which in turn rotates a geared shaft loaded with recoil springs. The load acted upon the speed breaker - setup is there by transmitted to rack and pinion arrangements.\r\n\r\nrack and pinion\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nHere the reciprocating motion of the speed-breaker is converted into rotary motion using the rack and pinion arrangement. The axis of the pinion is coupled with the sprocket arrangement. The sprocket arrangement is made of two sprockets. One of larger size and the other of smaller size. Both the sprockets are connected by means of a chain which serves in transmitting power from the larger sprocket to the smaller sprocket. As the power is transmitted from the larger sprocket to the smaller sprocket, the speed that is available at the larger sprocket is relatively multiplied at the rotation of the smaller sprocket.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nPower generation using Speed Breaker -Rack and Pinion Mechanism.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe axis of the smaller sprocket is coupled to a gear arrangement. Here we have two gears with different diameters. The gear wheel with the larger dimension is coupled to the axis of the smaller sprocket. Hence the speed that has been multiplied at the smaller sprocket wheel is passed on to this gear wheel of larger dimension. The smaller gear is coupled to the larger gear. So as the larger gear rotates at the multiplied speed of the smaller sprocket, the smaller gear following the larger gear still multiplies the speed to more intensity.\r\n\r\n\u00a0Hence, although the speed due to the rotary motion achieved at the larger sprocket wheel is less, as the power is transmitted to gears, finally the speed is multiplied to a higher speed. This speed which is sufficient to rotate the rotor of a generator is fed into to the rotor of a generator. The rotor which rotates within a static magnetic stator cuts the magnetic flux surrounding it, thus producing the electric motive force (emf). This generated emf is then sent to an inverter, where the generated emf is regulated. This regulated emf is now sent to the storage battery where it is stored during the day time. These days\u2019 new ways are being thought out of generating electricity because of ever increasing energy demands. One of the possible ways of generation of electricity may be using speed breaker which may be used in future across many locations.\r\n\r\nSee Also:Power Generation Using Speed Breaker with Help of Rack and Pinion Mechanism\r\n\r\n\r\nConstruction and Working\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\nIn its simple but effective construction this project consists of array of speed breakers. All odd numbers of speed breakers are actual speed breakers and all eve n numbers of speed breakers are dummy speed breakers. All dummy speed breakers are retractable within road cavity as these speed breakers are spring loaded. Whenever any vehicle passes over this array of speed breakers dummy speed breakers due to the weight of vehicles get depressed within the road cavity and the linear motion created because of depression of the dummy speed breakers is transferred to a mechanical link. The linear motion thus achieved in said link, thereafter is transferred to a set of free wheel where it is converted into circular. This circular motion thus achieved is then transmitted to flywheel where the motion i.e. mechanical energy is saved and released as per requirement.\r\n\r\n\r\nPower Generation Using Speed Breaker\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis flywheel is connected to a DC generator which converts the mechanical energy into electrical energy. This electrical energy then can be used to charge a battery using a charging circuit. From the battery the electrical energy can further be used for much application like providing electricity in local area.
