In Fig. , a force is being applied to a piston, which in turn exerts a pressure on the confined fluid. The\r\npressure is equal everywhere and acts at right angles to the containing surfaces. Pressure is defined as\r\nthe force acting per unit area and is expressed as \u00a0\r\n\r\nPressure= F\/A\r\n\r\nwhere F is the force acting on the piston, A is the area of the piston and p is the pressure on the fluid.\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\npascal law\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nPractical Applications of Pascal\u2019s Law\r\n\r\n\r\nThe practical applications of Pascal\u2019s law are numerous. In this section, two applications of Pascal\u2019s\r\nlaw are presented:\r\n(a) The hand-operated hydraulic jack and\u00a0\r\n(b) the air-to-hydraulic pressure booster.\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\nHand-Operated Hydraulic Jack\u00a0\r\nThis system uses a piston-type hand pump to power a hydraulic load cylinder for lifting loads, as illustrated in Fig..The operation is as follows:\r\n\r\n1. A hand force is applied at point A of handle ABC which is pivoted at point C. The piston rod of the pump cylinder is pinned to the input handle of the pump piston at point B.\u00a0\r\n\r\n2. The pump cylinder contains a small-diameter piston that is free to move up and down. The piston and rod are rigidly connected together. When the handle is pulled up, the piston rises and creates a vacuum in the space below it. As a result, the atmospheric pressure forces the oil to leave the oil tank and flow through check valve 1 to fill the void created below the pump piston. This is the suction process. \u00a0\r\n\r\n3. A check valve allows flow to pass in only one direction, as indicated by the arrow. When the handle is pushed down, oil is ejected from the small-diameter pump cylinder and it flows through check valve 2 and enters the bottom end of the large-diameter load cylinder.\u00a0\r\n\r\n4. The load cylinder is similar in construction to the pump cylinder and contains a piston connected to a rod. Pressure builds up below the load piston and equals the pressure generated by the pump piston. The pressure generated by the pump piston equals the force applied to the pump piston rod divided by the area of the pump piston. \u00a0\r\n\r\n5. The load that can be lifted equals the product of the pressure and the area of the load piston. Also, each time when the input handle is cycled up and down, a specified volume of oil is ejected from the pump to raise the load cylinder a given distance.\r\n6. The governor has no influence over cyclic speed fluctuations but it controls the mean speed over a long period during which load on the engine may vary. When there is a change in load, variation in speed also takes place then-governor operates a regulatory control and adjusts the fuel supply to maintain the mean speed nearly constant. Therefore, the governor automatically regulates through linkages, the energy supply to the engine as demanded by variation of the load so that the engine speed is maintained nearly constant.\r\nFunction Of Governor :\u00a0\r\n\r\n \tThe function of the governor is to increase the supply of working fluid going to the prime mover when the load on the prime-mover increases and to decrease the supply when the load decreases so as to keep the speed of the prime-mover almost constant at different loads.\r\n \tThe Governor mechanism is used to regulate the mean speed of an engine, when there are variations in the load e.g. when the load on an engine increases, its speed decreases, therefore it becomes necessary to increase the supply of working fluid. On the other hand, when the load on the engine decreases, its speed increases, and thus less working fluid is required.\r\n \tThe governor automatically controls the supply of working fluid to the engine with the varying load conditions and keeps the mean speed within certain limits.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFig. Governor\r\n\r\n\r\nExample of Governor Mechanism :\u00a0\r\n\r\n \tFigure shows an illustrative sketch of a governor along with linkages which regulates the supply to the engine. The governor shaft is rotated by the engine.\r\n \t If the load on the engine increases the engine speed tends to reduce, as a result of which governor balls move inwards. This causes the sleeve to move downwards and this movement is transmitted to the valve through linkages to increase the opening and, thereby, to increase the supply.\r\n \tOn the other hand, a reduction in the load increases engine speed. As a result of which the governor balls try to fly outwards. This causes an upward movement of the sleeve and it reduces the supply.\r\n \t Thus, the energy input (fuel supply in IC engines, steam in steam turbines, water in hydraulic turbines) is adjusted to the new load on the engine. Thus the governor senses the change in speed and then regulates the supply. \r\n \tDue to this type of action it is a simple example of a mechanical feedback control system which senses the output and regulates input accordingly.\r\n\r\n\r\nCLASSIFICATION OF GOVERNORS\u00a0\u00a0\r\nThe broad classification of the governor can be made depending on their operation.\r\n\r\n\r\nThere are basically two types of governors.\r\n\r\n\r\n1. Centrifugal governors, and\r\n2. Inertia governor.\r\n\r\nIn centrifugal governors, the centrifugal force is balanced by the controlling force. These types of governors are used extensively. In the inertia type of governors, the inertia force is balanced by the controlling force. They are not used popularly.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe centrifugal governors can be further classified as follows:\r\n\r\n1. Pendulum type\u2014Watt governor\r\n2. Loaded type\r\n\r\n\r\n(a) Dead weight type\r\n\r\n(i) Porter governor\r\n(ii) Proell governor\r\n\r\n(b) Spring-loaded type\r\n\r\n(i) Hartnell governor\r\n(ii) Hartung governor\r\n(iii) Wilson\u2013Hartnell governor\r\n(iv) Pickering governor\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\ntypes Of governors\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nCentrifugal Governors\r\n\r\n\r\n \tThese governors work on the principle of centrifugal action. They have two balls that rotate along with the sleeve. As the centrifugal forcer is directly proportional to the radius of rotation of the mass, therefore, when the speed of a device increases, the balls rotate at a larger radius. \r\n \tAs a result of it, the sleeve slides upwards on the spindle and with the help of a lever, the throttle is closed to the required extent. \r\n \tWith the decrease in speed, the balls rotate at a smaller radius of rotation, compelling the sleeve to move down on the spindle. The downward movement of the sleeve opens the throttle to the required extent to admit more fuel into the prime movers. By this process, the speed of the prime mover and in turn that of the driven device is maintained constant.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFig. Centrifugal Governor\r\n\r\n\r\nInertia and Flywheel Governors\r\n\r\nIn these governors, the inertia forces caused by the angular acceleration of the engine shaft or flywheel by the change in speed are\u00a0utilized\u00a0for the movement of the\u00a0balls. The movement of the balls is due to the rate of change of speed instead of\u00a0the change in speed itself as in the case of centrifugal governors. Thus, these governors\r\nare more sensitive than centrifugal governors.\u00a0\r\nPickering Governors\r\n\r\nThis type of governor is used for driving a gramophone. As compared to the centrifugal governors, the sleeve movement is very small. It controls the speed by\u00a0dissipating the excess kinetic energy. It is very simple in construction and can be\u00a0used for a small machine.\u00a0\r\n\r\n\u00a0Types of Centrifugal Governors\u00a0\r\nDepending on the construction these governors are of two types :\r\n(a) Gravity controlled centrifugal governors, and\r\n(b) Spring controlled centrifugal governors.\u00a0\r\n\r\nGravity Controlled Centrifugal Governors\r\n\r\n \tIn the gravity-loaded governors, a central load is attached to the sleeve, which slides on the spindle.\r\n \tThere is a force of friction between the loaded sleeve and the spindle. The frictional force acts downwards when the sleeve moves up and acts upwards when the sleeve moves down. Thus, the height of the governor increases or decreases from the normal value.\r\n\r\n\r\nSpring Controlled Centrifugal Governors\r\n\r\nIn these governors, a helical spring or several springs are utilized to control the movement of sleeve or balls. These governors are comparatively smaller in size.\r\n\u00a0\r\nWatt\u2019s Governor:\r\n\r\n\r\nWatt governor is the simplest and gravity controlled form of the centrifugal governors. It consists of two fly balls attached to the sleeve of negligible mass. The upper sides of arms are pivoted so that its balls can move upward and downward as they revolve with a vertical spindle. The engine drives the spindle through bevel gears. The lower arms are connected to the sleeves. The sleeve is keyed to the spindle in such a way that it revolves with the spindle. At the same time, it can slide up and down according to the spindle speed. Two stoppers are provided at the bottom and top of the spindle to limit the movement sleeve.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWatts GovernorWhen the load on the engine decreases, the speed of the engine and then the angular velocity of the governor spindle increase. The centrifugal force on the ball increase; that tends balls move outward and sleeve move upward. The upward movement of the sleeve actuates a mechanism that operates the throttle valve at the end of \u2015bell crank lever to decrease the fuel supply. The power output is reduced.\r\n\r\nWhen the speed of the engine decreases as the load on the engine increase, the centrifugal force decreases. The result is that the inward movement fly-balls and downward movement of the sleeve. The movement causes a wide opening of the throttle valve. The increase in the fuel supply also increases engine speed.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nTerms Used in Governors\r\nThe following terms used in governors are important from the subject point of view ;\r\n\r\n1. Height of a governor. - It is the vertical distance from the centre of the ball to a point where the axes of the arms (or arms produced) intersect on the spindle axis. It is usually denoted by h.\r\n2. Equilibrium speed.-\u00a0 It is the speed at which the governor balls, arms etc., are in complete equilibrium and the sleeve does not tend to move upwards or downwards.\r\n3. Mean equilibrium speed.-\u00a0 It is the speed at the mean position of the balls or the sleeve.\r\n4. Maximum and minimum equilibrium speeds. - The speeds at the maximum and minimum radius of rotation of the balls, without tending to move either way are known as maximum and minimum equilibrium speeds respectively.\r\nNote: There can be many equilibrium speeds between the mean and the maximum and the mean and the minimum equilibrium\r\nspeeds\r\n5. Sleeve lift. - It is the vertical distance which the sleeve travels due to change in equilibrium speed.\r\nPerformance of Governors :\u00a0\r\n1. Sensitiveness: \r\n\r\n \tFor maintaining a constant speed of rotation, the movement of the sleeve of the governor should be as large as possible and the corresponding change of equilibrium speed as small as possible.\r\n \tThe bigger the displacement of the sleeve for a given fractional change of speed, the more sensitive is the governor. Sensitiveness is more correctly defined as the ratio of the difference between the maximum and minimum equilibrium speeds to the mean equilibrium speed.\r\n \tA too sensitive governor changes the fuel supply by a large amount when a small change in the speed of rotation takes place. This causes wide fluctuations in the engine speed, resulting in the hunting of the governor.\r\n\r\nIf, \r\n\r\nNmax = maximum equilibrium speed\r\nNmin = minimum equilibrium speed\r\nNmean = mean equilibrium speed\r\nNmean = ( Nmax +Nmin ) \/ 2\r\n\r\nSpeed Range : Nmax - Nmin\r\n\r\nThen, Sensitiveness =\u00a0 (Nmax - Nmin) \/ Nmean\r\n\r\nPutting Nmean Value in Above Equation we get,\r\n\r\nSensitiveness = 2( Nmax - Nmin)\u00a0 \/\u00a0 ( Nmax +Nmin )\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Stability:\r\n\r\n \tA governor is said to be stable when for each speed within the working range, there is only one radius of the governor balls at which the governor is in equilibrium. For a stable governor, if the equilibrium speed increases, the radius of the governor balls must also increase.\r\n\r\n3. Isochronism:\r\n\r\n \tA governor is said to be isochronous, when the equilibrium speed is constant for all radii of rotation of the balls, within the working range. An isochronous governor will be infinitely sensitive.\r\n\r\n4. Hunting: \r\n\r\n \tIt is a condition in which the speed of the engine controlled by the governor fluctuates continuously above and below the mean speed. It is caused by a governor which is too sensitive.\r\n\r\n5. Governor effort: \r\n\r\nThe effort of a governor is the force it can exert at the sleeve on the mechanism, which controls the supply of fuel to the engine. The mean force exerted during the given change of speed is termed as effort. Generally efforts are defined for 1% change of speed.\r\n\r\n6. Same principle is being used in JCB\u2019s, automobile lifters, etc.\r\nPARTS\r\n\r\n \tIn the mechanism, each part has been provided with certain degree of freedom to move in a constrained way to guide other parts and also to pick up small weight items and to place them wherever required.\r\n \tThe complete mechanism consists of a fixed vertical link.\r\n \tTo its free end is connected or better to say hinged, another horizontal link which is free to oscillate about that hinge in an up-down way of motion.\r\n \tTo this link is connected a slotted type mechanism which consists of a slotted box which itself can oscillate about its hinge and in it is a sliding link which can come out of the slot to have the slider like motion.\r\n \tTo this slider is connected a surface, underneath which are attached 4 spoons acting as arm to pick up the items.\r\n \tThe entire mechanism is fixed on a rack and pinion type mechanism to allow degree of freedom of the mechanism as a whole to rotate by 130degrees.\r\n\r\nCONCEPT\r\nThe basic concept used behind the operation is PASCAL\u2019s LAW. This law states that when a pressure is applied at one point of a fluid contained in a constrained volume, then the pressure due to that force is equally transmitted to all the points of the fluid, which are acted upon by the same pressure.\r\nUsing the same principle, we applied pressure to fluid in syringe which is transmitted to other end of tube which is connected to a syringe. This motion of the syringe is used to move the links or parts of the mechanism which are attached to respective syringes.\r\nCONCEPTUAL DESIGN\r\n1.) The slotted mechanism used in the design, increases its complexity but at the same time increases its efficiency, ability, area of coverage.\r\n2.) Rack and pinion mechanism used to provide rotatory motion does its work smoothly without any jerks or shocks and giving more degree of rotation and thereby increasing the area of effect.\r\n3.) To increase overall stability and to avoid roll over or unbalancing due to torque or extra weight in the front part, suitable counter weight is used in the rear portion of the mechanism.\r\n4.) Soap water having least compressibility and high efficiency is used as a fluid in syringes.\r\nDEVELOPMENT OF MODEL\r\nThe complete development of the parts was brought out in the machine shop. Cutter is a common tool used in various cutting shape for a variety purposes. In this project, a glass cutter is provided which can form, using a wheel, a uniform crack in glass even when a projection or an earlier-formed scribe line is present on the glass. When the wheel is moved on the glass, a fracture layer is formed causing a rib mark to be formed below the fracture layer and a crack to be formed below the rib mark. To cut the glass, the crack is required to be formed uniformly.\u00a0\r\n\r\nApplying a force to resist the rotating force of the wheel makes it possible to form a uniform crack even when a projection is present on the glass. This improves glass cutting yield. A glass cutter is a tool used to make a shallow score in one surface of a piece of glass that is to be broken in two pieces. The scoring makes a split in the surface of the glass which encourages the glass to break along the score. Regular, annealed glass can be broken apart this way but not tempered glass, since it shatters rather than breaking cleanly into two pieces.\r\n\r\nA glass cutter may use a diamond to create the split or more commonly a small cutting wheel is used made of hardened steel or tungsten carbide 4-6 mm in diameter, with its cutting edge ground to a V-shaped profile. Some glass cutters hold a small amount of cutting oil, which both lubricates the wheel and prevents the split in the glass from closing. When properly lubricated a steel wheel can give a long period of satisfactory service. The improvement of cutter which is design and fabricate of a pneumatic cutter.
