Jacks employ a screw thread or hydraulic cylinder to apply very high linear forces.\r\n\r\nA mechanical jack is a device which lifts heavy equipment. The most common form is a car jack, floor jack or garage jack which lifts vehicles so that maintenance can be performed. Car jacks usually use mechanical advantage to allow a human to lift a vehicle by manual force alone. More powerful jacks use hydraulic power to provide more lift over greater distances. Mechanical jacks are usually rated for a maximum lifting capacity.\r\nScissor jack\r\nScissor jacks are simple mechanisms used to drive large loads short distances.The power screw design of a common scissor jack reduces the amount of force required by the user to drive the mechanism.Most scissor jacks are similar in design, consisting of four main members driven by a power screw. A scissor jack is operated simply by turning a small crank that is inserted into one end of the scissor jack. This crank is usually \"Z\" shaped. The end fits into a ring hole mounted on the end of the screw, which is the object of force on the scissor jack. When this crank is turned, the screw turns, and this raises the jack. The screw acts like a gear mechanism. It has teeth (the screw thread), which turn and move the two arms, producing work. Just by turning this screw thread, the scissor jack can lift a vehicle that is several thousand pounds. Power screw in a scissor jack is the foundation of whole mechanism of scissor jack.\r\n\r\nScissor jack\r\n\r\nProblem Statement:\r\nThe most common problem encountered while using scissor jack is the instability of jack while giving jerks to loosen the wheel nut. Also the common jack having small base is unable to provide proper support on uneven surface esp. off-road and no inclination in that jack is tolerable.\u00a0\r\nObjective:\r\nThe project relates to the designing of simple scissor jack and its analysis along with structural improvements to make such a modified jack that is very stable and can take enough load on uneven surfaces and somewhat inclination is also allowed.\r\nThe project also aims at designing and finding stresses, efficiency, expected life of screw. We endeavor to develop a screw jack such that it is cost effective, having a long life and can be handled roughly.\r\nRoadmap:\r\nHere we outline the timeline for the completion of various aspects for the project. The schedule is set so that the project is completed in phases. Phase I is market research, Phase II consists of the design process, Phase III entails PRO-e modeling of the design and simulation in ANSYS software, and the final aspect of the project is the presentation and the work that went into it.\r\nScissor jack:\r\nSpecifications\r\nThe term \"scissor jack\" describes a wide variety of tools that all follow the same principle: using crossed beams to lift something. They do this by acting on the object they are lifting in a diagonal manner; the lift on the right side lifts the object from its left side and vice versa. This allows the user to store the jack when it is not in use (with the diagonal beams flat) and to expand it when it is needed.\r\nAssembly\r\nA scissor jack has four main pieces of metal and two base ends. The four metal pieces are all connected at the corners with a bolt that allows the corners to swivel. A screw thread runs across this assembly and through the corners. As the screw thread is turned, the jack arms travel across it and collapse or come together, forming a straight line when closed. Then, moving back the other way, they raise and come together. When opened, the four metal arms contract together, coming together at the middle, raising the jack. When closed, the arms spread back apart and the jack closes or flattens out again.\u00a0\r\nWorking\r\nA scissor jack uses a simple theory of gears to get its power. As the screw section is turned, two ends of the jack move closer together. Because the gears of the screw are pushing up the arms, the amount of force being applied is multiplied. It takes a very small amount of force to turn the crank handle, yet that action causes the brace arms to slide across and together.\u00a0\r\nAs this happens the arms extend upward. The car's gravitational weight is not enough to prevent the jack from opening or to stop the screw from turning, since it is not applying force directly to it. It is commonly known as the mother of all other machine tools. The main function of a lathe is to remove metal from a job to give it the required shape and size. The job is securely and rigidly held in the chuck or in between centers on the lathe machine and then turn it against a single-point cutting tool which will remove metal from the job in the form of chips.\r\nLATHE OPERATIONS\u00a0\r\nFor performing the various machining operations in a lathe, the job is being supported and driven by any one of the following methods.\r\n\r\n1. Job is held and driven by chuck with the other end supported on the tailstock center.\r\n2. Job is held between centers and driven by carriers and catch plates.\r\n3. Job is held on a mandrel, which is supported between centers and driven by carriers and catch plates.\r\n4. Job is held and driven by a chuck or a faceplate or an angle plate.\r\n\r\nThe above methods for holding the job can be classified under two headings namely job held between centers and job held by a chuck or any other fixture. The various important lathe operations are depicted in Fig. (a), (b) and (c).\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe operations performed in a lathe can be understood by three major categories.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n(a) Operations, which can be performed in a lathe either by holding the workpiece between centers or by a chuck are:\r\n\r\n\r\n1. Straight turning -\u00a0 \r\n\r\nTurning is the operation in which a cylindrical surface is produced. The workpiece is supported between centers or in any other work holding device and rotated at the desired speed. The tool is first given a depth of cut by using the cross slide motion of the carriage and then given an axial feed by hand or power. Which can be made to overlap to produce a cylindrical surface on the workpiece by adjusting the feed and having a large nose radius. Repeated cuts may be necessary to obtain a desired reduction of size. A final finishing cut may be given to the workpiece with a low depth of cut and feed but high speed to attain the desired degree of surface finish.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nturning operation\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n2. Shoulder turning\r\n\r\n3. Taper turning - \r\n\r\nTaper turning is the process of producing external and internal conical surfaces by combining the rotation of the job and the relative angular feed of the tool. Tapers are used on many tools and machine components for alignment and easy holding. Such as the shank of twist drills, end mills, and reamers, spindles of lathe and drilling machine.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n4. Chamfering -\r\n\r\nChamfering is the process of beveling the extreme ends of a workpiece. It is done to remove the burrs, to protect the end of the workpiece from being damaged and to have a better look.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nchamfering operation\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n5. Eccentric turning -\r\n\r\nIt is a turning operation in which turning is performed at a different axis on a single setting of a job. This method of turning is generally used to produce crankshafts and camshafts.\r\n\r\n6. Thread cutting - \r\n\r\nThe process of making threads on a cylindrical job is called threading\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nthread cutting operation\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n7. Facing -\r\n\r\nFacing is an operation used to produce a flat surface at right angles to the rotational axis of the job. In this case, the tool is fed at right angles to the job while the depth of cut is provided by the axial motion of the carriage. The job may be held in a chuck or between centers. In this center about half of the front cone is removed to give access to the tool.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nfacing operation\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n8. Forming -\r\n\r\nIt is a process in which a convex, concave or any irregular surface is formed on the workpiece with the help of a forming tool. Grooving -\r\n\r\nThe process of creating a narrow slot on the workpiece is called grooving. It is also known as recessing or necking\r\n\r\n12. Knurling -\r\n\r\nKnurling is the process of embossing a diamond-shaped pattern on the cylindrical surface of a workpiece. Knurling is done on the workpiece so that it does not slip when held and operated by hand. The workpiece is supported in the chuck but since quite heavy forces are involved in the knurling process an additional support is generally provided at the free end with the tailstock center.\u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nknurling operation\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n13. Undercutting -\r\n\r\nIn the undercutting operation, we enlarge the diameter if done internally and decrease the diameter if done externally. It is done at the end of the hole, near the stepped shoulder of a cylindrical surface and the end of a threaded portion in the blot.\r\n\r\n2. Parting-off - \r\n\r\nThe part is removed so that it faces the ends. For this, the parting tool is involved in slowly to make operate. To cut deeper the parting tool is pulled out and transferred to the side for the cut and to prevent the tool from breaking. \u00a0\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nparting off operation\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n3. Internal thread cutting\u00a0\r\n\r\n4. Drilling -\r\n\r\nThe workpiece is held in a chuck or on a faceplate and the drill is held in the tailstock quill or a drill chuck held in the quill. The taper in the quill ensures that the axis of the drill is concentric with the rotational axis of the spindle. Feeding is done by movement of the tailstock quill. Reamers, counterbores and other cutting tools may also be used similarly in place of the drill.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\ndrilling operation\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n5. Reaming -\r\n\r\nThe process of enlarging the holes to accurate sizes is called reaming. Reaming is always performed after drilling operations. It is similar to the drilling process. Boring - \r\n\r\nBoring is the process of enlarging a hole produced by drilling, casting, punching or forging with the help of a single point tool. Boring cannot originate a hole. In boring the job is held in a chuck or faceplate and a boring tool held on the tool post is fed into it. The operation is similar to external turning in that the feed and depth of cut are given by the longitudinal and cross-motions of the tool respectively. Sensors to detect other vehicles or obstacles can include radar, video, infrared, ultrasonic or other technologies. GPS sensors can detect fixed dangers such as approaching the stop signs through a location database.\r\n\r\n2. Automotive night vision\r\n\u00a0\r\nAn automotive night vision system uses a thermographic camera to increase a driver's perception and seeing distance in darkness or poor weather beyond the reach of the vehicle's headlights.\u00a0Night Vision Assistant was introduced in 2010 on the Audi A8.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFig. Night Vision In audi 8\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n3. Emergency brake assist (EBA)\r\n\u00a0\r\nEmergency brake assist (EBA) or Brake Assist (BA or BAS) is a generic term for an automobile braking technology that increases braking pressure in an emergency situation.\u00a0By interpreting the speed and force with which the brake pedal is pushed, the system detects if the driver is trying to execute an emergency stop, and if the brake pedal is not fully applied, the system overrides and fully applies the brakes until the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) takes over to stop the wheels locking up.\r\n\u00a0\r\n4. Airbags:\r\n\u00a0\r\nAn airbag is a vehicle safety device. It is a type of occupant restraint system that consists of a flexible fabric bag, also known as an airbag cushion. The airbag module is designed to inflate rapidly then quickly deflate during a collision or impact with another object or a sudden deceleration. The purpose of the airbag is to provide occupant protection and restraint during a crash event. The airbag provides an energy absorbing surface between the vehicle's occupant and a steering wheel, instrumental panel, A-B-C- structural body frame pillars, headliner and windshield\/windscreen.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAir Bags\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n5. Fog lamps\u00a0\r\n\r\nFront fog lamps provide a wide, bar-shaped beam of light with a sharp cutoff at the top, and are generally aimed and mounted low. They may produce white or selective yellow light, and were designed for use at low speed to increase the illumination directed towards the road surface and verges in conditions of poor visibility due to rain, fog, dust or snow.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFog Lamps\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n6.Adjustable Steering Column\r\n\r\nAdjustable steering column allows steering wheel height to be adjusted with only a small, useful change in tilt. Most of these systems work with compression locks or electric motors.\r\n\r\n7.Reversing Camera\r\n\r\nA backup camera (also called reversing camera) is a special type of video camera that is produced specifically for the purpose of being attached to the rear of a vehicle to aid in backing up, and to alleviate the rear blind spot. Parking Sensors\r\nParking sensors are proximity sensors for road vehicles designed to alert the driver to obstacles while parking. Adaptive Cruise Control:\r\nAdaptive cruise control ( or radar cruise control) is an optional cruise control system for road vehicles that automatically adjusts the vehicle speed to maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead. It makes no use of satellite or roadside infrastructures nor of any cooperative support from other vehicles. Hence control is imposed based on sensor information from on-board sensors only.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAdaptive Cruise Control\r\n\r\n\r\n10.\u00a0Direct TPMS\r\n\r\nDirect TPMS, or Direct Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (direct sensor TPMS) refers to the use of a pressure sensor directly mounted on the wheels or tires of a vehicle.The pressure inside the tire is measured using a pressure transducer with the pressure information being subsequently sent to the vehicle to warn the driver of under or over inflation of a tire. The pressure information is commonly transmitted to the vehicle using radio frequency (RF) technology, though systems using mechanical, electrical or magnetic methods have been used over recent years.\r\n11. Traction Control System:\r\n\r\nA traction control system (TCS) is designed to prevent loss of traction of driven road wheels. TCS is activated when throttle input and engine torque are mismatched to road surface conditions.\r\n\r\n12.\u00a0Collision avoidance system\r\n\r\nA collision avoidance system is an automobile safety system designed to reduce the severity of an accident. Also known as precrash system, forward collision warning system or collision mitigating system, it uses radar (all-weather) and sometimes laser and camera (both sensor types are ineffective during bad weather) to detect an imminent crash. Once the detection is done, these systems either provide a warning to the driver when there is an imminent collision or take action autonomously without any driver input (by braking or steering or both).\u00a0\r\n\r\nCollision avoidance by braking is appropriate at low vehicle speeds (e.g. below 50 km\/h), while collision avoidance by steering is appropriate at higher vehicle speeds.\r\n\u00a0\r\nCars with collision avoidance are also equipped with adaptive cruise control, and use the same sensors like ACC.\r\n\r\n13.\u00a0Cornering brake control\r\n\r\nCornering Braking System is designed\u00a0to distribute braking force during braking whilst cornering.\r\n\r\nIt works by applying braking pressure asymmetrically despite physically difficult conditions (e.g. the car swerving towards the inside of the bend when the wheel load changes). By asymmetrically distributing brake pressure to the left- and right-side brakes or by reducing pressure (to the rear axle), even if the driver brakes outside the normal range of ABS.\r\n\r\n14.\u00a0Seatbelts limit the forward motion of an occupant, stretch to absorb energy, to lengthen the time of the occupant's negative acceleration in a crash, reducing the loading on the occupants body. They prevent occupants being ejected from the vehicle and ensure that they are in the correct position for the operation of the airbags.\r\n\r\n15.\u00a0Blindspot Warning System\r\n\r\nBlind spot warning systems detect the distance and closing speed of objects in adjacent lanes and alert the driver if a collision is imminent.\r\n\r\nOn a highway, a car which is far behind can be clearly seen in the rear view mirrors. However, as the car approaches, a point is reached where the car cannot be seen in either the interior or exterior mirrors. Typically this occurs when the car is just behind and to one side of the vehicle it is overtaking. It is a common mistake for drivers to change lanes when there is a vehicle in this so-called \"blind spot\", a manoeuvre which causes many crashes.\r\n\r\nSeveral manufacturers have developed systems which monitor the blind spot and help a driver to change lanes safely. These prime movers can provide various movements to the objects by using some mechanical attachments like screw jack, lever, rack and pinions etc. However, these are not the only prime movers. The enclosed fluids (liquids and gases) can also be used as prime movers to provide controlled motion and force to the objects or substances. The specially designed enclosed fluid systems can provide both linear as well as rotary motion. The high magnitude controlled force can also be applied by using these systems. This kind of enclosed fluid-based systems using pressurized incompressible liquids as transmission media are called as hydraulic systems. The hydraulic system works on the principle of Pascal's law which says that the pressure in an enclosed fluid is uniform in all the directions.\r\n\r\nRead also:\r\n\r\n \t Basic Components and its Functions of a Hydraulic System\r\n \t\u00a0Introduction to Pascal\u2019s Law and its practical Application\r\n\r\nThe hydraulic systems consists a number of parts for its proper functioning. These include storage tank, filter, hydraulic pump, pressure regulator, control valve, hydraulic cylinder, piston, and leak-proof fluid flow pipelines. The schematic of a simple hydraulic system is shown in figure. \r\n\r\nIt consists of:\r\n\r\n\r\n \ta movable piston connected to the output shaft in an enclosed cylinder\r\n \tstorage tank\r\n \tfilter\r\n \telectric pump\r\n \tpressure regulator\r\n \tcontrol valve\r\n \tleak proof closed-loop piping.\r\n\r\n&nbsp;\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nhydraulic System\r\n\r\n\r\nThe output shaft transfers the motion or force however all other parts help to control the system. The storage\/fluid tank is a reservoir for the liquid used as a transmission media. The liquid used is generally high-density incompressible oil. It is filtered to remove dust or any other unwanted particles and then pumped by the hydraulic pump. The capacity of the pump depends on the hydraulic system design. These pumps generally deliver constant volume in each revolution of the pump shaft. Therefore, the fluid pressure can increase indefinitely at the dead-end of the piston until the system fails. The pressure regulator is used to avoid such circumstances which redirect the excess fluid back to the storage tank. The movement of the piston is controlled by changing the liquid flow from port A and port B. The cylinder movement is controlled by using a control valve which directs the fluid flow. The fluid pressure line is connected to the port B to raise the piston and it is connected to port A to lower down the piston. The valve can also stop the fluid flow in any of the ports. The leak-proof piping is also important due to safety, environmental hazards, and economic aspects. Some accessories such as flow control system, travel limit control, electric motor starter, and overload protection may also be used in the hydraulic systems which are not shown in the figure .\r\nHydraulic Circuit - Hydraulic Layout Diagram\r\nComponents of Hydraulic System\r\nBasic hydraulic system has the following components:\r\n1) Oil reservoir\r\n2) Rotary pump\r\n3) Pressure relief valve\r\n4) Direction control valve\r\n5) Flow control valve\r\n6) Double-acting cylinder\r\n7) Pressure gauge\r\n8) Filter\r\n\r\n1) Oil Reservoir\r\n\r\n \tThe main function of the \"oil reservoir\" is to store a sufficient amount of hydraulic oil in the system.\r\n\r\nApart from this, it has other important functions such as:\r\n(a) To cool the hot return oil.\r\n(b) To settle down the contaminants\r\n(c) To remove air bubbles.\r\n(d) To separate water from the oil etc.\r\n2) Rotary pump\r\n\r\n \tThe function of the rotary pump is to pump hydraulic oil to the hydraulic circuit'\r\n \tIt converts the mechanical energy (rotation of shaft) into hydraulic energy\r\n \tA rotary pump is a positive displacement pump. It can deliver constant flow even at high pressure\r\n\r\n3) Pressure relief valve\r\n\r\n \tIt is an important component which is required for every positive displacement pump\r\n \tThis valve is connected to the outlet of the pump. Its main function is to release the oil back tank when the pressure increases beyond pre-set value.\r\n\r\n4) Direction control valve\r\n\r\n \tIt controls the direction of flow of oil, by which it performs extension and retraction of the actuator\r\n\r\n5) Flow control valve\r\n\r\n \tIt Controls the rate of flow of oil by which the speed of extension or retraction of the actuator is controlled.\r\n\r\n6) Actuator\r\n\r\n \tActuator produces work. There are two types, linear actuator and rotary actuator\r\n \tA linear actuator is called a cylinder, a rotary actuator is called a motor.\r\n \tA double-acting cylinder develops force and motion. It converts hydraulic energy into mechanical energy\r\n\r\nForce developed = Pressure of oil x Area of piston\r\n7) Pressure gauge\r\n\r\n \tIt is an important component of the hydraulic system.\r\n \tIt shows the pressure reading.\r\n \tPressure settings are made by looking to the pressure gauge.\r\n \tWithout pressure gauge, it is not possible to make the pressure relief valve setting, unloading valve settings etc.\r\n\r\n8) Filter\r\n\r\n \tIts main function is to remove suspended solid contaminants from the oil and to provide clean hydraulic oil to the system\r\n\r\n\u00a0Applications of hydraulic systems\r\n1. Machine tools: CNC (computerized numerical control) machines, hydraulic presses, hydraulic shapers, etc.\r\n2. Material handling equipment: Elevators, forklifts, cranes, lifts and hoists etc.\r\n3. Construction field: Earthmoving machines such as excavators, cranes, dozers, loaders, dumpers, tippers, trucks, tractors, etc.\r\n4. Automobiles: Hydraulic brakes, hydraulic steering, hydraulic suspension, hydraulic\r\nclutch, hydraulic power transmission, hydraulic coupling,\r\n5. Material testing laboratory: UTM (universal testing machine) and other destructive testing Machines, BP (burst pressure) testing machine etc.\r\n6. Aerospace: Landing gear, brakes, flight controls (such as), cargo loading door, rudder, elevator, flap, aileron, etc.\r\n7. Railways: Hydraulic brakes, hydraulic steering, hydraulic suspension, hydraulic clutch, hydraulic power transmission, hydraulic coupling hydraulic torque converter, etc. \r\n8. Marine field: Ship steering system, ship-yards, ship-building.\r\n9. Medical equipment: Medical chairs and operating tables.\r\n10. Agricultural equipment: Harvesters, tractors, field sprayers, seeding machine, fertilizer machine etc.\r\n\r\nAdvantages and Disadvantages of Hydraulic system\r\n\r\nAdvantages of Hydraulic System :\r\nThe basic advantages offered by a hydraulic system are as follows:\r\nl. Hydraulic power is easy to produce, transmit, store, regulate and control, maintain and transform\r\n2. Weight to power ratio of a hydraulic system is comparatively less than that for an electromechanical system. (About 8.5 kg\/kw for electrical motors and 0.g5 kg\/kw for a hydro system).\r\n3. It is possible to generate high gain in force and power amplification.\r\n4. Hydraulic systems are uniform and smooth, generate step-less motion and variable speed and force to a greater accuracy.\r\n5. The division and distribution of hydraulic power is simpler and easier than other forms of energy.\r\n6. Limiting and balancing of hydraulic forces are easily performed.\r\n7. Frictional resistance is much less in a hydraulic system as compared to a mechanical movement.\r\n8. Hydraulic elements can be located at any place and controlled reversely.\r\n9. The noise and vibration produced by hydraulic pumps is minimal.\r\n10. Hydraulic systems are cheaper if one considers the high efficiency -of power transmission.\r\nI l. Easy maintenance of hydraulic system is another advantage.\r\n12. Hydraulics is mechanically safe, compact, and is adaptable to other forms of power and can be easily controlled.\r\n13. Hydraulic output can be both linear, rotational, and angular. The use of flexible connections in the hydraulic system permits the generation of compound motion without gears etc.\r\n14. Hydraulics is a better over-load safe power system. This can be easily achieved by using a pressure relief valve.\r\n15. Absolutely accurate feedback of load, position, etc. can be achieved in a hydraulic system as in electro-hydraulic and digital electronic servo system. Because of high power and accurate control possibility, in modem engineering language hydraulics is termed as the muscle of the system and electronics its nerves.\r\n\r\nDisadvantages of Hydraulic System :\u00a0\r\nIn spite of all the above advantages, hydraulic systems have some drawbacks which are mentioned below.\r\n\r\nThe disadvantages are:\r\n1. Hydraulic elements have to be machined to a high degree of precision which increases the manufacturing cost of the system.\r\n2. Certain hydraulic systems are exposed to unfriendly climate and dirty atmosphere as the in case of mobile hydraulics like dumpers, loaders, etc.\r\n3. The leakage of hydraulic oil poses problems to hydraulic users.\r\n4. Hydraulic elements have to be specially treated to protect them against rust, corrosion, dirt, etc.\r\n5. Hydraulic oil may pose problems if it disintegrates due to aging and chemical deterioration.\r\n6. Petroleum-based hydraulic oil may pose fire hazards thus limiting the upper level of working temperature. However, due to the availability of synthetic fire-resistant oils this problem is of academic interest nowadays.
