When the moving abrasive particles contact the workpiece, they act as tiny cutting tools, each particle cutting a tiny chip from the workpiece. It is a common error to believe that grinding abrasive wheels remove material by a rubbing action; actually, the process is as much a cutting action as drilling, milling, and lathe turning. The grinding machine supports and rotates the grinding abrasive wheel and often supports and positions the workpiece in proper relation to the wheel. The grinding machine is used for roughing and finishing flat, cylindrical, and conical surfaces; finishing internal cylinders or bores; forming and sharpening cutting tools; snagging or removing rough projections from castings and stampings; and cleaning, polishing, and buffing surfaces. Once strictly finishing machines, modem production grinding machines are used for complete roughing and finishing of certain classes of work.\r\n\r\nWhat is Cylindrical Grinding :\r\n\r\nThis operation is carried out on a cylindrical grinding machine which is made in two varieties \u2018\u2018plain\u2019\u2019 and the \u2018\u2018universal\u2019\u2019 type. The fundamental design is the same in both cases, but the universal machine can be adopted for internal grinding operation as well.\r\nIn cylindrical grinding operation, the work is mounted between two centres and is rotated. A grinding wheel is mounted on a spindle and revolves at much higher r.p.m. than the work. The work centres are mounted on a table which can traverse at various feeds so that the entire length of the work passes to and fro in front of the wheel. The depth of cut is very small, about 0.015 mm. When the entire length of work has passed infront of the wheel, the wheel advances forward by another 0.015 mm at the end of the traverse and so the cycle of machining goes on, until the desired daimeter of the work piece is reached. The result is a long cylinder of perfectly circular profile with very fine surface finish.\r\nA schematic diagram of the plain cylindrical grinder is given in Fig.\r\n\r\n cylindrical grinder\r\n\r\nImportant steps in cylindrical grinding\r\n\r\n1. Check the work for size to make sure grinding stock has been allowed, and the same time note any tapering of the work.\r\n2. Inspect the work centers to see that they are clean and true. Select machine centers of suitable diameters to fill the work's centers properly. The footstock center should be cut away enough to permit the grinding wheel to clear the end of the work; a center of this type is known as a\r\none-half-full, or a three quarter full, centre.\r\n3. Attach the grinding dog on the end of the job, making sure that the dog does not damage such part of the work as threads and keyways; then lubricate the machine centers.\r\n4. Set the table traverse for the length of the work, allowing for overrun of the end and the space occupied by the grinder dog.\r\n5. If necessary, mount the steady rests and adjust the shoes to the work.\r\n6. Dress the grinding wheel, passing the diamond across the wheel-face quickly to make the wheel fast cutting. Set the work speed at the correct surface speed in feet per minute. Plungecut grinding\r\n7. Feed the wheel to the Work by hand and take a light cut, noting, that the wheel starts to cut approximately at the high point of the work.\r\n8. Check the work for size and taper and-make any table adjustments necessary to ensure that the work will be straight.\r\n9. Rough grind the job to the rough size. If several pieces are to be done, set the S top on the ratchet and proceeds as before, roughing the balance of the pieces.\r\n10. After the pieces have been roughed out, place the dog on the rough-ground end of the work and grind the unfinished end. If this end is shorter than the width of the wheel face, it may be plunge-cut ground. Make sure that the grinding, wheel is kept sharp and clean by frequent\r\ndressing.\r\n11. To finish-grind, set the machine for fast work speed and slow traverse and dress the wheel by passing the diamond slowly across the wheel face.\r\n12. Insert the piece to be finish-ground and take alight trial cut. Check it for size and make any corrections necessary for removal of taper\" if steady rests are used, keep them adjusts to the work.\r\n13. After the first piece has been ground to finished size, reset the stop on the feed ratchet so that the in feed will produce the required size and. then set the shoes ' on the steady rests for the finished diameter.\r\n14. Finish-grind the remaining pieces. This outline pertains to grinding a plain cylinder. Open Source: Python is a open source programming language.\r\n4. Large standard library: Python comes with a large standard library that has some handy codes and functions which we can use while writing code in Python.\r\n\r\n5. Free: Python is free to download and use. This means you can download it for free and use it in your application.\r\n\r\n6. Supports exception handling: If you are new, you may wonder what is an exception? An exception is an event that can occur during program exception and can disrupt the normal flow of program. Python supports exception handling which means we can write less error prone code and can test various scenarios that can cause an exception later on.\r\n\r\n7. Advanced features: Supports generators and list comprehensions. We will cover these features later.\r\n\r\n8. Automatic memory management: Python supports automatic memory management which means the memory is cleared and freed automatically. You do not have to bother clearing the memory.\r\n\r\nPython for mechanical engineers\r\n\r\nThe choice of a programming language for a mechanical engineer depends completely on the field of implementation.\r\n\r\nMechatronics and Arduino enthusiasts: Go for C.\r\nIt is the standard for processor level programming.\r\n\r\nPython on the other hand, is great for rapid prototyping, fluid mechanics (Navier-Stokes solving) and robotics and automation too.\r\n\r\nAdvantages:\r\n\r\nIt has a wide range of functionalities, multiple libraries to support mathematics and analytics (NumPy, SciPy, matplotlib, Pandas)\r\n\r\nIt uses less code, and is therefore easy to learn.\r\n\r\nMATLAB, the industry standard for prototyping is costly, which gives Python the upper hand.\r\n\r\nIt\u2019s modules to support matrix math and arrays are rich and the developers\u2019 community is good and fast-progressing. They must therefore be strong enough to bear the stress, while avoiding too much additional weight as that would in turn increase their inertia.\r\n\r\nTo allow for variations in the alignment and distance between the driving and driven components, drive shafts frequently incorporate one or more universal joints, jaw couplings, or rag joints, and sometimes a splined joint or prismatic joint.\r\n\r\nThe propeller shaft is a shaft that transmits power from transmission (gear box) to the differential. On one end, propeller shaft in connected to main transmission shaft by universal joint. On the other hand, it is connected to differential pinion shaft by another universal joint. Propeller shaft transmits the rotary motion of main transmission shaft (coming from gear box) to the differential so that rear wheels can be rotated. A sliding (slip) joint, is also fitted between universal joint and propeller shaft on transmission side which takes care of axial motion of propeller shaft. Propeller shaft is made of a steel tube which can withstand torsional stresses and vibrations at high speeds.\r\nIt is important to note that the differential pinion shaft and transmission main shaft are not in single horizontal level. The rear axle and differential is attached to automobile frame via springs. Therefore, distance between differential and gear box keeps on changing as vehicle moves along irregular road surface. Angle of propeller shaft also changes due to this fact. Universal joints provided at two ends takes care of these two changes. The propeller shaft along with universal joints has been shown in Figure\r\n\r\nPropeller Shaft Figure :\u00a0\r\n\r\npropeller shaft\r\n\r\nDrive shaft parts :\u00a0\r\n\r\ndrive shaft parts\r\n\r\nWhat are the functions of a propeller shaft ?\r\n\r\nThe main function of propeller shaft is to connect two mechanical elements or component i.e. one is driving element and another is driven element. We can transmit torque\/turning moment and power from one component to another which are apart at some distance. Propeller shaft in vehicle and ship just connects the main engine to the power drive which drives the vehicle or ship.\r\n\r\nThe main failure which is generally observed in propeller shaft is twisting moment due to excessive shear stress.
