It is a convenient and affordable way to make prototypes as well as finished products, making it popular with businesses, hobbyists and inventors.

One of the technologies used by today's 3D printers is called selective laser sintering (SLS). During SLS, tiny particles of plastic, ceramic or glass are fused together by heat from a high-power laser to form a solid, three-dimensional object.

The SLS process was developed and patented in the 1980s by Carl Deckard — then an undergraduate student at the University of Texas — and his mechanical engineering professor, Joe Beaman.

Selective laser sintering (SLS) is an additive manufacturing (AM) technique that uses a laser as the power source to sinter powdered material (typically metal), aiming the laser automatically at points in space defined by a 3D model, binding the material together to create a solid structure. It is similar to direct metal laser sintering (DMLS); the two are instantiations of the same concept but differ in technical details. Selective laser melting (SLM) uses a comparable concept, but in SLM the material is fully melted rather than sintered, allowing different properties (crystal structure, porosity, and so on). SLS (as well as the other mentioned AM techniques) is a relatively new technology that so far has mainly been used for rapid prototyping and for low-volume production of component parts. Production roles are expanding as the commercialization of AM technology improves.

Working of SLS - Selective Laser Sintering

In this method, a thin layer of powder is applied using a roller. The SLS uses a laser beam to selectively fuse powdered materials, such as nylon, elastomers and metals into a solid object as shown in the Fig.

selective laser sintering process

The CO2 laser is often used to sinter successive layers of powder instead of liquid resin. Parts are built upon a platform which sits just below the surface in a bin of the heat-fusible powder. A beam of laser then traces the pattern on the very first layer thereby sintering it together. The platform is further lowered by the height of the second layer and powder is again applied. This process is continued until the part is completed. The excess amount of powder at each layer helps to support the part during its build-up.

Advantages of SLS

 A distinct advantage of the SLS process is that because it is fully self-supporting, it allows for parts to be built within other parts in a process called nesting – with highly complex geometry that simply could not be constructed any other way.
 Parts possess high strength and stiffness
 Good chemical resistance
 Various finishing possibilities (e.g., metallization, stove enameling, vibratory grinding, tub coloring, bonding, powder, coating, flocking)
 Bio compatible according to EN ISO 10993-1 and USP/level VI/121 °C
 Complex parts with interior components, channels, can be built without trapping the material inside and altering the surface from support removal.
 Fastest additive manufacturing process for printing functional, durable, prototypes or end user parts.
 Vast variety of materials and characteristics of Strength, durability, and functionality, SLS offers Nylon based materials as a solution depending on the application.
 Due to the excellent mechanical properties the material is often used to substitute typical injection molding plastics.

Disadvantages
SLS printed parts have a porous surface. This can be sealed by applying a coating such as cyanoacrylate.
Selective Laser Sintering – Advantages and Disadvantages
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to What is Polyjet 3d printing Technology used For Prototyping

What is Polyjet 3d printing Technology used For Prototyping

What is Polyjet 3d printing Technology used For Prototyping

The technology offers exceptional detail, surface smoothness, and precision.

PolyJet builds parts with photopolymer resins. Photopolymers or photocurable materials come in many different compositions, from flexible to rigid, transparent to opaque. PolyJet is one of two 3D printing technologies to print color directly into a part and it is the only technology capable of printing multiple materials simultaneously, offering gradations from stiff to flexible in one part. Polyjet also has the capability of creating over molded parts, moving assemblies, and multiple material property components from over 350,000 digital material options.

Read More : 3D Printing | Rapid Prototyping | Additive Manufacturing

What file format is used to process a part on a PolyJet system?
3D printing processes typically begin with a 3D CAD model that is then exported as an STL file. Other data inputs are possible through CT and MRI scans. There are also a variety of 3D scanners that can capture data and output STL files. The STL file is uploaded to the printer’s software program. From there, the user can hit the print button to grow the part or can use more advanced features for specialized parts.

What is the minimum thickness Stratasys PolyJet machines can print? (Also known as resolution)
The minimum layer thickness varies from 0.0006 inches to 0.0012 inches depending on material and machine. The user can choose a desired thickness based on the printer, the application, part intent, and material capabilities.

PolyJet 3D printing technology and materials - Working

The first Polyjet 3D printing system was launched by Objet Geometries Ltd. in 2000. Stratasys has acquired Objet Geometries Ltd. in 2012. The Polyjet 3D printing technique consists in building of parts, layer by layer, combining inkjet technology with photopolymerization
process. The main steps are the following: pre-processing, processing and post-processing. In the pre-processing step, the part orientation on the build tray is optimized using Objet Studio software. Safe operation of the vehicle demands that the operator be able to maintain absolute control of the vehicle’s critical operating dynamics:
(1) Control of the direction of motion of the vehicle (steering)
(2) Control of the velocity of the vehicle, i.e. the ability to slow and fully stop the vehicle (braking)

Electric power steering (EPS or EPAS) uses an electric motor to assist the driver of a vehicle. Sensors detect the position and torque of the steering column, and a computer module applies assistive torque via the motor, which connects to either the steering gear or steering column. This allows varying amounts of assistance to be applied depending on driving conditions. Engineers can therefore tailor steering-gear response to variable-rate and variable-damping suspension systems, optimizing ride, handling, and steering for each vehicle. On Fiat group cars the amount of assistance can be regulated using a button named "CITY" that switches between two different assist curves, while most other EPS systems have variable assist. These give more assistance as the vehicle slows down, and less at faster speeds. In the event of component failure that fails to provide assistance, a mechanical linkage such as a rack and pinion serves as a back-up in a manner similar to that of hydraulic systems.

Electric Power Assisted Steering

Electric systems have an advantage in fuel efficiency because there is no belt-driven hydraulic pump constantly running, whether assistance is required or not, and this is a major reason for their introduction. Another major advantage is the elimination of a belt-driven engine accessory, and several high-pressure hydraulic hoses between the hydraulic pump, mounted on the engine, and the steering gear, mounted on the chassis. This greatly simplifies manufacturing and maintenance. By incorporating electronic stability control electric power steering systems can instantly vary torque assist levels to aid the driver in corrective maneuvers. The first electric power steering system appeared on the Suzuki Cervo in 1988

NEED OF EPAS
Design options are one of the biggest advantages to the electric power steering. With no pump, mounting bracket, hose or pulley or belt, a lot of under-hood space is liberated for other uses, especially when the servo motor is mounted on the column inside the car. The control unit can be, mounted anywhere on the vehicle, and it can vary the boost level infinitely over a wider range of conditions. Boost level can even become a driver-adjustable feature, and of course boost is available even when engine isn’t running,

Needs a lot of data though, and the power requirement have an impact on the battery and charging system design. Also, the steering wheel torque sensor is a very sophisticated new device which means it’s relatively early in its development and therefore, expensive. But when u think about all the hydraulic stuff you don’t need for steering, the trade-off is quite acceptable from the engineering, service and environmental point of view. Eliminating power steering fluid from a vehicle provides obvious environmental advantages, along with the fuel saved by not having to drive a hydraulic pump with the engine. On the production line, the time requirement for installation and adjustment is significantly shorter. In the development lab, tuning the system to work in different vehicles takes a few hours of computer type, instead of several days needed to install and different hydraulic valve combinations.

First, larger, heavier cars require more power to turn the steering wheel, and more expensive rack-mounted-motor design are more suitable for the smaller application.
Second, according to an SAE paper written by Dominique Peter and Ruck Gerhard of ZF Len system (Steering system) in Germany, the present generation of electric steering boost can’t deliver the feel and handling that sriver’s expect in larger, heavier cars, which in their country mean expensive cars.
A good answer to both these problem lies in another “new” technology that Delphi and others say is just around the corner: the 42-volt electrical system. Regardless of how an electric steering is configured, current draw would be very high, more than most of today’s electrical systems can provide for any length of time.

BASIC COMPONENT’S AND WORKING
The system itself comprises main components: An electric control unit (E.C.U.) , a torque sensor, an electric motor and an intermediate gear with clutch. All these components are integrated into one unit which can be placed on any part of steering column. A database is used to communicate the vehicle speed and engine speed to the EPAS system and the torque sensor detects the force the driver is using to turn the steering wheel. All this information is passed to the ECU.
The ECU uses this information to calculate the additional force required by the EPAS system to achieve the pre-programmed steering feel. The steering power is then transmitted by engine to the steering gear by means of an intermediate gear system. The ratio between manual steering torque and electric power controlled in relation to vehicle speed, offering the relevant assistance at varying speeds.

At low speed the system offers maximum power, making the steering easy to operate, and at increased speed, when little or no assistance is required reduces amount of power supplied.
Throughout this operation the ECU monitors the system constantly to detect malfunctions and, if necessary, disengages the power assistance with the aid of a built clutch. This ensures that the car still steerable if a fault occurs.

FUTURE SCOPE

To-date, technical and product liability concerns have precluded the introduction of such systems in the U.S. market through it is expected that niche application may be expected in the near-to-midterm mix of future vehicles. Such system designs have yet to prove themselves sufficiently reliable and safe to prevent dangerous auto steer event. Auto steer has crept into the lexicon as an adjunct to the development of EPS system. As the name implies Auto steer denote an uncontrolled steering event neither commanded nor stoppable by the vehicles driver due to catastrophic failure in the electron hardware or software. In truth, these systems are control servo systems, similar in function to aircraft control servo systems, and must have multiple redundancies.
Although these new EPAS systems are said to have multiple redundancy, their design and broad application within the automotive industry have been, and will continue to be, subject to economic pressure more extreme then found in the aircraft industry. For instance one obvious safety related item has been universally deleted from such system specifications: a clutch for physically disengaging the reduction gear box and drive motor assist assembly from the host steering system in the event of system failure. This means that a driver encountering an EPAS system failure will have to exert additional force to “Back drive” The systems reduction gear box and drive motor assist assembly while attempting to maintain control of the vehicle in the absence of normal power steering assist.
Electric Power Assisted Steering – Mechanical Project
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Electric-Power-Assisted-Steering_clip_image004-300x249.gif
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Heat Transfer Analysis of Engine Cylinder Fins Having Triangular Shape

Heat Transfer Analysis of Engine Cylinder Fins Having Triangular Shape

Heat Transfer Analysis of Engine Cylinder Fins Having Triangular Shape

Among the three segments (motorcycles, scooters and mopeds) of the Indian two wheeler market, major growth trends have been seen in the motorcycle segment over the last four to five years due to its resistance and balance even on bad road conditions. In Indian motorcycles, Air-cooling is used due to reduced weight and simple in construction of engine cylinder block. As the air-cooled engine builds heat, the cooling fins allow the wind and air to move the heat away from the engine. Low rate of heat transfer through cooling fins is the main problem in this type of cooling. The Engine cylinder is one of the major automobile components, which is subjected to high temperature variations and thermal stresses. In order to cool the cylinder, fins are provided on the surface of the cylinder to increase the rate of heat transfer. By doing thermal analysis on the engine cylinder fins, it is helpful to know the heat dissipation inside the cylinder. The principle implemented in the project is to increase the heat dissipation rate by using the invisible working fluid, nothing but air. We know that, by increasing the surface area we can increase the heat dissipation rate, so designing such a large complex engine is very difficult. The main purpose of using these cooling fins is to cool the engine cylinder by air. The main aim of the project is to analyze the thermal properties by varying geometry, material of cylinder fins.

There are three basic mechanisms of heat transfer which are often referred as modes of heat transfer. These are conduction, convection and radiation. All the energy transfer that takes place in the form of heat is either any one or a combination of these.
1. Conduction
2. Convection
3. Radiation

Extended Surfaces

It is most common approach to enhance the Heat transfer by using the extended surfaces. A plain fin may increases the surface area but a special shape extended surface may increase heat transfer coefficient in addition to the heat exchanger. The extended surfaces for liquids typically use much smaller fin heights than that used for gases because of the higher heat transfer coefficient for liquids. Use of high fins with liquids would result in low fin efficiency and result in poor material utilization. Externally finned tube and internally finned tube are tha examples of extended surfaces for liquids.

Heat Transfer Analysis of Engine Cylinder Fins Having Triangular Shape

The temperature distribution, rate of heat transfer and fin effectiveness for six common profiles of longitudinal fins are given below. The analytical expressions given for these profiles are based on the following assumptions:
1. The heat conduction in the fin is steady and one dimensional.
2. The fin material is homogeneous and isotropic.
3. There is no energy generation in the fin.
4. The convective environment is characterized by a uniform and constant heat transfer coefficient and temperatures.
5. The fin has a constant thermal conductivity.
6. The contact between the base of the fin and the primary surface is perfect.
7. The fin has a constant base temperature.

Application
1. Fins are commonly used as heat management in electrical appliances.
2. Condensers in Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.
3. Engine Cooling.
4. Thin plate of fins of Car Radiator
5. Heat exchanger in power plant
6. Most effective in application where heat transfer coefficient (h) is low.
7. Nature has also taken advantage of the phenomena of fins. The ears of jackrabbits and fennec foxes act as fins to release heat from the blood that flows through them.
8. In old times say Dinosaur time, Fins are on the backside of the Dinosaur.
9. Fins are also used in automobiles like engine cylinder with fins.

Reference and Download :

Heat Transfer Analysis of Engine Cylinder Fins Having Triangular Shape
Heat Transfer Analysis of Engine Cylinder Fins Having Triangular Shape
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/Heat-Transfer-Analysis-of-Engine-Cylinder-Fins-Having-Triangular-Shape-300x150.jpg
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to What is Piezoelectricity – Application Of Piezoelectricity

What is Piezoelectricity – Application Of Piezoelectricity

What is Piezoelectricity - Application Of Piezoelectricity

The most common piezoelectric material is quartz. Certain ceramics, Rochelle salts, and various other solids also exhibit this effect.

Piezoelectricity is the electric charge that accumulates in certain solid materials (such as crystals, certain ceramics, and biological matter such as bone, DNA and various proteins) in response to applied mechanical stress. The word piezoelectricity means electricity resulting from pressure and latent heat.

The piezoelectric effect results from the linear electromechanical interaction between the mechanical and electrical states in crystalline materials with no inversion symmetry. The piezoelectric effect is a reversible process: materials exhibiting the piezoelectric effect (the internal generation of electrical charge resulting from an applied mechanical force) also exhibit the reverse piezoelectric effect, the internal generation of a mechanical strain resulting from an applied electrical field.

piezoelectricity application
Major Application of Piezoelectricity :
Piezoelectricity is exploited in a number of useful applications, such as the

 production and detection of sound,
 piezoelectric inkjet printing,
 generation of high voltages,
 electronic frequency generation,
 microbalances, to drive an ultrasonic nozzle, and
 ultrafine focusing of optical assemblies.
 It forms the basis for a number of scientific instrumental techniques with atomic resolution, the scanning probe microscopies, such as STM, AFM, MTA, and SNOM. It also finds everyday uses such as acting as the ignition source for cigarette lighters, and push-start propane barbecues, as well as being used as the time reference source in quartz watches.
 A piezoelectric transformer is a type of AC voltage multiplier. Unlike a conventional transformer, which uses magnetic coupling between input and output, the piezoelectric transformer uses acoustic coupling.
 The best-known application is the electric cigarette lighter: pressing the button causes a spring-loaded hammer to hit a piezoelectric crystal, producing a sufficiently high-voltage electric current that flows across a small spark gap, thus heating and igniting the gas. The portable sparkers used to ignite gas stoves work the same way, and many types of gas burners now have built-in piezo-based ignition systems.
 Piezoelectric sensors especially are used with high frequency sound in ultrasonic transducers for medical imaging and also industrial nondestructive testing (NDT).
 Piezoelectric motors: Piezoelectric elements apply a directional force to an axle, causing it to rotate. Due to the extremely small distances involved, the piezo motor is viewed as a high-precision replacement for the stepper motor.
 Diesel engines: High-performance common rail diesel engines use piezoelectric fuel injectors, first developed by Robert Bosch GmbH, instead of the more common solenoid valve devices.
What is Piezoelectricity – Application Of Piezoelectricity
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

« PREV Page 1 … Page 165 Page 166 Page 167 Page 168 Page 169 … Page 338 NEXT »

About Us

LearnMech.Com is a Mechanical Project-oriented platform run by Sachin Thorat who is a B-Tech Graduate in Mechanical Engineering.
