However, the name rotary actuator is reserved for a particular type of unit that is limited in rotation to less than 360 degree .A hydraulic motor is a device which converts fluid power into rotary power or converts fluid pressure into torque. Torque is a function of pressure or, in other words, the motor input pressure level is determined by the resisting torque at the output shaft. A hydraulic pump is a device which converts mechanical force and motion into fluid power. A hydraulic motor is not a hydraulic pump when run backward. A design that is completely acceptable as a motor may operate very poorly as a pump in a certain applications. Differences between a hydraulic motor and a hydraulic pump are given in Table

hydraulic pump vs hydraulic motor

Hydraulic Pump Vs Hydraulic Motor :

Sr.no. Hydraulic Motor Hydraulic Pump

1.It is a device for delivering torque at a given
pressure. The main emphasis is on mechanical
efficiency and torque that can be transmitted. It is a device for delivering flow at a given
pressure. The main emphasis is on volumetric
efficiency and flow.

2.Motors usually operate over a wide range of
speed, from a low RPM to high RPM.Pumps usually operate at high RPM.

3.Most motors are designed for bidirectional
applications such as braking loads, rotary tables. In most situations, pumps usually operate in one
direction

4. Motors may be idle for long time (as in index
table).Pumps usually operate continuously.

5.
Motors are subjected to high side loads (from
gears, chains, belt-driven pulleys).Majority of pumps are not subjected to side loads.
Usually pumps are pad mounted on power pack
top and shaft is connected to the prime mover
directly.

Difference Between Hydraulic motor and Hydraulic Pump
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to QA vs QC – Difference between Quality Assurance and Quality Control

QA vs QC – Difference between Quality Assurance and Quality Control

QA vs QC - Difference between Quality Assurance and Quality Control

It started with activities whose purpose is to control the quality of products or services by finding problems and defects.

At its simplest, QC is inspecting, testing or checking something (service or product) to make sure it’s OK. The intent is to identify anything that isn’t OK, and either fix it or eliminate it, to make sure it conforms to the specifications, and has/does/functions as required. QC is typically done at the end of the line, before it ‘goes out the door’. If the something isn’t OK, this is called ‘nonconformity’ or a nonconforming service/product.
Quality Control does not ensure quality; it only finds instances where quality is missing.

For example:
Product: Marker Pen
Requirement: All markers should have logo as “ABC”.
QC can pinpoint all those markers which don’t have any logo or have wrong logo but it cannot tell you why the manufacturing unit is producing some markers without logo.

Important activities done in QC – Inspection, testing.
QC is only about ‘Corrective measures’.
About Quality Assurance (QA)
Quality Assurance developed from the realization that quality could be improved by looking ‘further up the line’. So, whether you accept and implement improvement suggestions immediately, or if you do it at the end of each sprint, the key is to accept input from everyone on the team and to make ongoing iterative improvements to the development process, workflow, toolset, etc.

continuous process improvement
The continuous improvement cycle includes four key steps:

 Plan & Measure
 Develop & Test
 Release & Deploy
 Track & Fine Tune

Identify the opportunity:

The objective of this phase is to identify and prioritize opportunities for improvement.
 It has three parts

 Identify the problem
 Form the team
 Define the scope.

Analyze the current process:

The objective of this phase is to understand the process and how it is currently performed.
Key activities are to define process boundaries outputs and customers, inputs and suppliers and process flow, determine levels of customer satisfaction and measurements needed, gather data and identify root causes.
With the help of process flow diagram the team will

Establish performance measures with respect to customer requirements.
Determine data needed to manage the process
Establish regular feedback with customers and suppliers.
Establish measures for quality/cost/time of inputs and outputs.

Once the target performance measures are established, the team can collect all available data and information.
 Gathering data by the team

Helps confirm that a problem exists
Enables the team to work with facts
Makes it possible to establish measurement criteria for baseline
Enables the team to measure the effectiveness of an implemented solution.

The team should develop a plan that includes input from internal and external customers and answers the following questions

What problem or operation do we want to learn about?
What are the data used for?
 How many data are needed?
What conclusions can be drawn from the collected data?
What action should be taken as a result of the conclusion?

Develop the optimal solution:

The objective of this phase is to establish potential and feasible solution and recommend the best solution to improve the process.
Once all the information is available the project team begins it search for possible solutions.
In this phase creativity plays the major role and brainstorming is the principle technique
There are three types of creativity

 Create new processes
 Combine different processes
 Modify the existing processes

Implement Changes:

Once the best solution is selected it should be implemented.
This phase has the objective of preparing the implementation plan, obtaining approval and implementing the process improvements.
Although the team has the authority in implementing the solution but it has to get approval from the quality council.
If such approval is needed from the quality council, the team has to give a written or oral report.
The report should fully describe about

 Why will it be done?
 How will it be done?
 When will it be done?
 Who will do it?
 Where will it be done?

The length of the report is determined by the complexity of the change.
Simple changes may require only an oral report, whereas other changes require a detailed written report.

Study the Results:

This phase has the objective of monitoring and evaluating the change by tracking and studying the effectiveness of the improvement efforts through data collection and review of progress.
The team should meet periodically during this phase to evaluate the results to see that the problem has been solved or if fine tuning is required.
If the team is not satisfied, then some of the phases will need to be repeated.

Standardize the solution:

Once the team is satisfied with the change, it must be institutionalized by positive control of process, process certification and operator certification.
Positrol (positive control) assures that the important variables are kept under control.
It specifies that what, who, how, where and when of the process and is an updating of the monitoring activity.

Plan for the future:

This phase has the objective of achieving improved levels of process performance.
Everyone in the organization is involved in a systematic, long term endeavor to constantly improve quality by developing processes that are customer oriented, flexible and responsible.
What is Continuous Process Improvement | Phases Of CPI
@type":"Person
Sachin The purpose of the document is to guide welders to the accepted procedures so that repeatable and trusted welding techniques are used. A WPS is developed for each material alloy and for each welding type used. Specific codes and/or engineering societies are often the driving force behind the development of a company's WPS. A WPS is supported by a Procedure Qualification Record (PQR or WPQR). A PQR is a record of a test weld performed and tested (more rigorously) to ensure that the procedure will produce a good weld. Individual welders are certified with a qualification test documented in a Welder Qualification Test Record (WQTR) that shows they have the understanding and demonstrated ability to work within the specified WPS.
According to the American Welding Society (AWS), a WPS provides in detail the required welding variables for specific application to assure repeatability by properly trained welders. The AWS defines welding PQR as a record of welding variables used to produce an acceptable test weldment and the results of tests conducted on the weldment to qualify a Welding Procedure Specification. For steel construction (civil engineering structures) AWS D1.1 is a widely used standard. It specifies either a pre-qualification option (chapter 3) or a qualification option (chapter 4) for approval of welding processes.
The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) similarly defines a WPS as a written document that provides direction to the welder or welding operator for making production welds in accordance with Code requirements.ASME also defines welding PQR as a record of variables recorded during the welding of the test coupon. This limitation is overcome in vane pumps.
The leakage is reduced by using spring or hydraulically loaded vanes placed in the slots of the driven rotor.
Vane pumps are available in a number of vane configurations including sliding vane, flexible vane, swinging vane, rolling vane, and external vane etc.
The operating range of these pumps varies from - 32 °C to 260 °C.

Working principle of Vane Pump :

The schematic of the vane pump working principle is shown in figure. Vane pumps generate a pumping action by tracking of vanes along the casing wall.
The rotor in a vane pump is connected to the prime mover through a shaft. The vanes are located on the slotted rotor.
The rotor is eccentrically placed inside a cam ring as shown in the figure. The rotor is sealed into the cam by two side plates.
When the prime mover rotates the rotor, the vanes are thrown outward due to centrifugal force. The vanes track along the ring.
It provides a tight hydraulic seal to the fluid which is more at the higher rotation speed due to higher centrifugal force. This produces a suction cavity in the ring as the rotor rotates. It creates a vacuum at the inlet and therefore, the fluid is pushed into the pump through the inlet.

vane pump working

The fluid is carried around to the outlet by the vanes whose retraction causes the fluid to be expelled.
The capacity of the pump depends upon the eccentricity, expansion of vanes, and width of vanes and speed of the rotor. It can be noted that the fluid flow will not occur when the eccentricity is zero.
These pumps can handle thin liquids (low viscosity) at relatively higher pressure.
However, these pumps are not suitable for high-speed applications and for the high viscosity fluids or fluids carrying some abrasive particles.
The maintenance cost is also higher due to many moving parts.

Vane Pumps types
There are two types of vane pumps:

1. Unbalanced vane pump: Unbalanced vane pumps are of two varieties:

Unbalanced vane pump with fixed delivery.
Unbalanced vane pump with pressure-compensated variable delivery.

2. Balanced vane pump.
Unbalanced Vane Pump with Fixed Delivery
A simplified form of unbalanced vane pump with fixed delivery and its operation is shown in Figs. The main components of the pump are the cam surface and the rotor. The rotor contains radial slots splined to drive shaft. The rotor rotates inside the cam ring. Each radial slot contains a vane, which is free to slide in or out of the slots due to centrifugal force. The vane is designed to mate with the surface of the cam ring as the rotor turns. The cam ring axis is offset to the drive shaft axis. When the rotor rotates, the centrifugal force pushes the vanes out against the surface of the cam ring. The vanes divide the space between the rotor and the cam ring into a series of small chambers. During the first half of the rotor rotation, the volume of these chambers increases, thereby causing a reduction of pressure.

This is the suction process, which causes the fluid to flow through the inlet port. During the second half of rotor rotation, the cam ring pushes the vanes back into the slots and the trapped volume is reduced. This positively ejects the trapped fluid through the outlet port. In this pump, all pump-action takes place in the chambers located on one side of the rotor and shaft, and so the pump is of an unbalanced design. The delivery rate of the pump depends on the eccentricity of the rotor with respect to the cam ring.

Read More :

Screw Pump | Working, Design, Advantages and Disadvantages
External Gear Pump | Design, Advantages and Disadvantages
What is Positive Displacement Pumps | Types and Advantages

simple vane pump diagram
Balanced Vane Pump with Fixed Delivery
A balanced vane pump is a very versatile design that has found widespread use in both industrial and mobile applications. The basic design principle is shown in Fig. The rotor and vanes are contained within a double eccentric cam ring and there are two inlet segments and two outlet segments during each revolution. This double pumping action not only gives a compact design, but also leads to another important advantage: although pressure forces acting on the rotor in the outlet area are high, the forces at the two outlet areas are equal and opposite, completely canceling each other. As a result, there are no net loads on shaft bearings. Consequently, the life of this type of pump in many applications has been exceptionally good. Operating times of 24000 h or more in industrial applications are widespread. In more severe conditions encountered in mobile vehicles, 5000–10000 h of trouble-free operation is frequently achieved.
Balanced Vane Pump Diagram :
balanced vane pump diagram
Advantages and disadvantages of Vane Pumps
The advantages of vane pumps are as follows:
1. Vane pumps are self-priming, robust, and supply constant delivery at a given speed.
2. They provide uniform discharge with negligible pulsations.
3. Their vanes are self-compensating for wear and vanes can be replaced easily.
4. These pumps do not require check valves.
5. They are light in weight and compact.
6. They can handle liquids containing vapors and gases.
7. Volumetric and overall efficiencies are high.
8. Discharge is less sensitive to changes in viscosity and pressure variations.

The disadvantages of vane pumps are as follows:

1. Relief valves are required to protect the pump in case of sudden closure of delivery.
2. They are not suitable for abrasive liquids.
3. They require good seals.
4. They require good filtration systems and foreign particles can severely damage the pump.

Advantages and disadvantages of balanced vane pumps
The advantages of balanced vane pumps are as follows:

1. The balanced pump eliminates the bearing side loads and therefore high operating pressure can be used.
2. The service life is high compared to the unbalanced type due to less wear and tear.

The disadvantages of balanced vane pumps are as follows:

1. They are fixed displacement pumps.
2. Design is more complicated.
3. The manufacturing cost is high compared to the unbalanced type.

Application of Vane Pump :
These pumps have various applications for the pumping of the following fluids:

 Aerosol and Propellants
Aviation Service - Fuel Transfer, Deicing
Auto Industry - Fuels, Lubes, Refrigeration Coolants
Bulk Transfer of LPG and NH3
 LPG Cylinder Filling
 Alcohols
 Refrigeration - Freons, Ammonia
 Solvents

Vane Pumps – Types, Working, Diagram, Advantages
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Difference Between Shaper and Planer – Learnmech

Difference Between Shaper and Planer – Learnmech

Difference Between Shaper and Planer - Learnmech
