This type of thermal energy storage system can be used as a medium to store energy and can be used further.\r\n\r\nINTRODUCTION\r\nThe continuous increase in the level of greenhouse gas emissions and the increase in fuel prices are the main driving forces behind efforts to more effectively utilize various sources of renewable energy. In many parts of the world, direct solar radiation is considered to be one of the most prospective sources of energy. One of the options is to develop energy storage devices, which are as important as developing new sources of energy. The storage of energy in suitable forms, which can conventionally be converted into the required form, is a present day challenge to the technologists. The use of a latent heat storage system using phase change materials (PCMs) is an effective way of storing thermal energy and has the advantages of high-energy storage density and the isothermal nature of the storage process. There are large numbers of PCMs that melt and solidify at a wide range of temperatures, making them attractive in a number of applications. The project includes testing of a small heat exchanger, in order to establish the effectiveness of using paraffin wax as a suitable phase change material. The paraffin wax is incorporated in the heat exchanger, which acts as thermal energy storage device. This device will then be tested on a test rig for water heating and other applications.\r\n\r\nObjective: The objective of this project is to design and fabricate a tube in tube, phase change material (PCM) based heat exchanger, which can act as a thermal energy storage device, and hence can be incorporated in solar water heater. The thermal energy storage device will act as a short term energy storage device.\r\n\r\nEXPERIMENTAL SETUP\r\n\r\nPCM in solar water heater:\r\n\r\nWorking: During sunshine period, valve 1 is kept open and valve 2 is kept closed. The cold water from the storage tank goes through the flat plate solar collector, absorbing heat energy from the solar radiations. It then passes through the PCM heat exchanger, where it loses its heat to the phase change material. It then goes back to the storage tank. In this way, the PCM gains heat energy which will then be used to heat water during non-sunshine period.\r\nDuring non-sunshine period, valve 1 is kept closed and valve 2 is kept open. The cold water from the storage tank goes through the PCM heat exchanger, absorbing heat energy from the heat stored in the phase change material. It then goes back to the storage tank. By this way cold water is heated with the help of heat stored in the PCM.\r\n\r\nDesigning PCM Based Heat Exchanger: The calculation for the PCM based heat exchanger is done in the following steps:\r\n\r\nAmount of hot water required: Usually, in a typical household, during non-sunshine period, requirement of water is around 3 buckets. Taking volume of each bucket as 20 litres, total requirement will amount to 60 litres. However for our experimental purpose we consider designing of a heat exchanger to heat 10 kg of water. The same approach may be adopted to design a system of higher requirement.\r\n\r\nAmount of heat energy to be stored: During winter season, the average temperature at which the water is available in the tanks is around 15-20oC. Temperature of water required for comfortable bathing during winter season is around\u00a040oC. Hence the amount of temperature difference we need to attain for comfortable bathing is 20-25oC.\r\n\r\nInitial temperature of water Ti = 15oC\r\nFinal (desired) temperature of water Tf = 40oC\r\nTf \u2013Ti = 25oC\r\nHeat capacity of water, Cv = 4.187 kJ\/kg\r\nHence, amount of heat required to carry out the above transition = Q\r\nQ = mwater x (Tf \u2013Ti) x Cv\r\ni.e. Q = 10 x 25 x 4.187 = 1046.75 kJ\r\nHence, amount of energy needs to be stored = 1046.7 kJ\r\n\r\nSelection of suitable heat exchanger: A tube in shell type heat exchanger is the simplest choice of heat exchanger. Incorporation of phase change material is also easy in this type of exchanger. The phase change material is incorporated in the outer shell of the heat exchanger and the heat transfer fluid (HTF), which is water in this case, flows from the inner tube.\r\n\r\nSelection of suitable phase change material: Selection of a suitable phase change material is very important and is the fundamental requirement of our project. The paraffin wax has high latent heat capacity of 206 kJ\/kg. The phase transition temperature of the wax is 40oC to 50oC, which is suitable for our requirement. The change in volume of wax from solid to liquid is negligible. The wax is chemically stable and does not affect any component of the heat exchanger. Above all, wax is available at low cost.\r\n\r\n thermal energy storage\r\n\r\nCONCLUSION\r\nParaffin wax is a good PCM for energy storage in latent heat storage system. It has a suitable transition temperature range of 45-55\u00b0C and a relatively high latent heat of 206 kJ\/kg. In addition, it does not exhibit any subcooling.\r\nA simple tube-in-tube heat exchanger system can be used for energy storage with reasonable charging and discharging times. The melting was more at the top and nearer to the inner tube. The solidification was rapid at the point which was nearer to the inner tube carrying heat transfer fluid.\r\nThe given arrangement can be used to store thermal energy in solar water heating application. The cost to\u00a0incorporate the system is also very economical. The primary objective of using paraffin wax as a PCM material has been successfully experimented. Though the continuous movement is more or less important in the same field of the sporadic motion has become essential. The objective of this study is to design a mechanism that delivers this stop and move motion using the mechanical linkages. The advantage of this system over the conveyor system is that the system has a time delay between moving packages and this delay can be used to introduce any alterations in the package or move the package for any other purpose and likewise. While in the normal conveyor mechanism such actions cannot be performed unless programmed module is used to produce intermittent stopping of the belt which is basically costly. The prototype design requires an electric motor, shafts and the frame of which, the frame and platform on which the packages are moved is fabricated. All the links are made up of normal MS (mild steel) and wood including the head which has a direct contact with the boxes that are to be moved. The system is expected to move as heavy packages as 2 KGs approximately. The aim of the project work is to design and fabricate a box moving mechanism that makes much easier to move with the so called quad staying machines by means of which a box blank is folded or set-up into box like form. These set-up boxes are transferred by means of a conveyor to an operator, who picks up the boxes and places and centers\u2019 them on wrappers with which the boxes are to be covered. The boxes and wrappers are then conveyed to a box wrapping machine where the wrapper is folded around and glued to the box. Usually, the operation of the wrapping machine is controlled by means of a switch actuated by the box forming machine so that their operating speeds are related to each other.\r\n\r\nINTRODUCTION\r\nThe box moving or shifting set up has a simple mechanism, operated with crank and links arrangement. As by the electric motor rotary motion is converted into the To and Fro motion of the linkages, it takes very simple. The rotary motion is converted in to linear motion by the crank and mechanical linkages arrangement. The conveyor system is either continuous movement or if the time delay is to be produced there will be definite requirement of software programming which will be costly. So a basic module of moving packages is designed with time delay which can be used to do alterations if required in the package or move the package for any other purpose. This invention relates to\u00a0improvements in transfer and conveying devices, and it relates particularly to devices for transferring set-up cardboard boxes from a box folding or forming machine to the operator of a semi-automatic box wrapping machine. A great many manufacturers of fancy wrapped or covered cardboard boxes used for packaging candies, cakes and other confections, cosmetics and other articles are equipped computer-aided technologies [CAD, CAM]), to control industrial machinery and processes, reducing the need for human intervention. In the scope of industrialization, automation is a step beyond mechanization. Whereas mechanization provided human operators with machinery to assist them with the muscular requirements of work, automation greatly reduces the need for human sensory and mental requirements as well. Processes and systems can also be automated. Automation plays an increasingly important role in the world economy and in daily experience. Majority of refrigerator system works on vapour compression refrigeration system. This system consists of compressor, condenser, expansion valve and evaporator. The performance of the system depends upon these system components.\r\nThe main objective of the project is to increase the performance of the system by increasing the heat transfer rate through the evaporator. Heat transfer from the evaporator increased by the changing the shape of the evaporator and by extended surfaces. In view of the above it is proposed to fabricate the ellipse shaped evaporator coil and to carry out the experimental investigation on it evaluate it performance and to compare it with the existing evaporator in the vapour compression refrigeration system. In this experiment involves 165 Litres capacity of domestic refrigerator which in turn results the better performance than the previous one, and same results can be seen in the coefficient of performance.\r\n\r\nINTRODUCTION\r\n\r\nThe vapour compression system is the most widely used refrigeration system in practice. This refrigeration system adopts the vapour compression cycle. This cycle requires the addition of external work for its operation. Basically it consists of four processes namely:\r\n\r\n1).Isentropic compression \r\n\r\n2).Constant pressure heat rejection\r\n\r\n3).Isenthalpic expansion \r\n\r\n4).Constant pressure heat addition\r\n\r\nThe ellipse shape coil is used in almost all small refrigeration systems. Vapour refrigerant enters the ellipse shaped evaporator coil and as it flows through the suction pressure, the pressure drops because of friction and acceleration of the refrigerant. Some of the liquid flashes into the vapour as the refrigerant flows through the coil. Once the ellipse shape coil has been selected and installed, it cannot adjust to the variations in discharge pressure, suction pressure or load. Compressor and expansion device must arrive at suction and discharge conditions such that the compressor pumps the same flow rate of the refrigerant from the evaporator that the expansion device feeds. The designer of a new\u00a0refrigeration unit employing a ellipse shaped coil must select the bore and length of the coil so that the compressor and its components operate under balanced operating condition at the desired evaporator temperature.\r\n\r\nOBJECTIVE AND SCOPE :\r\n\r\nObjective and scope of the present work are\r\n\r\n \tTo perform studies on the ellipse shaped evaporator coil of vapour compression refrigeration system with alternative refrigerant.\r\n \tTo numerically simulate the helical ellipse shape coil to understand the vapour flow and heat transfer involved in the system.\r\n \tTo study experimentally the effect of the coil diameter and the tube diameter on the performance of the vapour compression refrigeration system.\r\n \tTo compare experimentally evaluated results with that obtained by numerical simulation.\r\n\r\nThe ellipse shape coil used as an expansion device in small capacity hermetic sealed refrigeration units such as in domestic refrigerators water coolers room air conditioners, especially in small capacity installations. It is a copper tube of small internal diameter and of varying length depending upon the application. The inside diameter of the tube used in refrigeration work is generally defreeze box aluminium. But here ellipse shaped coil .at the inlet of the coil in order to protect it from contaminants.\r\nIn its operation, the liquid refrigerant from the condenser enters the capillary tube. Due to the frictional resistance offered by a small diameter tube, the pressure drops, since the frictional resistance offered by a small diameter tube, the pressure inversely proportional to the diameter, therefore longer the ellipse shape coil and smaller its inside diameter, greater is the pressure drop created in the refrigerant flow, in other words, greater pressure difference between the condenser and evaporator is needed for a given flow rate of the refrigerant.
