Thus, there is relative movement between the inner and outer wheel. \r\n\r\nThe function of the differential is to permit the relative movement between inner and outer wheels when vehicle negotiates (takes) a turn. The torque transmitted to each rear wheel is equal in this case, although their speed is different.\r\n\r\nThe differential is made up of a system of gears that connect the propeller shaft and rear axles. It is a part of inner axle housing assembly. The assembly consists of differential, rear axles, wheels, and bearings.\r\n\r\n\r\nThe need of differential gearbox:\r\n When a vehicle travels in a straight line, the two rear wheels turn on the road exactly at the same speed and there is no relative movement between two rear wheels.\r\nBut when vehicle takes a turn the outer wheel travels on a longer radius than the inner wheel. The outer wheel turns faster than inner wheel i.e. there is relative movement between two rear wheels. If two rear wheels are rigidly fixed to a rear axle, the inner wheel will slip, which will cause rapid tire wear, steering difficulties and poor road holding. Therefore there must be some device, which will divide the input torque of the transmission system between two rear axles. Differential serves this purpose.\r\nDifferential gearbox Location :\u00a0\r\nLocation in a different type of vehicle layouts-\r\n\r\n1. In Front-engine front-wheel-drive layout - differential is located at the front next to gearbox.\r\n2. In Rear engine rear-wheel-drive layout - differential is located at the rear next to gearbox.\r\n3. Four wheels drive layout - differential is located at the front as well as rear.\r\n4. Front engine rear-wheel-drive layout - it is located at the rear in between two half shafts.\r\nPrinciple of differential-\r\nIf a vehicle travels in a straight line, the two rear wheels turn exactly at the same speed, and there is no relative movement between them. But when the vehicle takes a turn the outer wheel travels a longer radius than the inner wheel i.e. there is relative movement between the two rear wheels. The outer wheel turns faster and covers a larger distance than the inner wheel. Drive pinion or Bevel pinion\r\n2. Ring gear or Crown wheel\r\n3. Differential case\r\n4. Differential side gear or Sun gears\r\n5. Differential pinions (or) Planet gears\r\n6. Axle shafts or Half shafts\r\n7. Pinion shaft or Cross pin (or) spider.\r\n\r\n\r\nFigure. shows the basic parts of the type of differential used in rear-wheel-drive cars.\r\nOn the inner ends of each axle a smaller bevel gear called differential side gear is mounted. Two bevel gears are put together to mesh both driving and driven shafts at an angle of 90\u00b0. The differential case is mounted with two-wheel axles and differential side gears. The differential case has bearings that rotate two axle shafts. Then, the two pinion gears and their supporting shaft, called pinion shafts, are fitted into the differential case. Then, the pinion shaft meshes with the two differential side gears connected to the inner ends of the axle shafts.\r\n\r\nThe ring gear is bolted to a flange on the differential case. The' ring gear rotates the differential case. Finally, the drive pinion is mounted. The drive pinion is assembled with the differential housing called differential case or carrier. The driver shaft is connected with the drive pinion by a universal joint and it meshes with the ring gear. So, the drive pinion is rotated when the drive shaft turns. Thus, the ring gear is rotated.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\ndifferential gear box working\r\n\r\n\r\nWorking of differential gearbox :\r\n1. When Running Straight: \r\n\r\nWhen the vehicle moves in a straight line, the power comes from the propeller shaft to the bevel pinion which drives the crown wheel. Then it is carried to the differential cage in which a set of planet pinions and sun gears are located. From the sun gear it is transmitted to the road wheels through-axle half shafts. In this case, the crown wheel, differential cage, planet pinions, and sun gears all turn as a single unit and there is no relative motion between the sun gear and planet pinion. The planet pinions do not rotate about their own axis. The road wheels, half shafts, and sun wheels offer the same resistance to being turned and the differential gearing does not therefore operate. Both the road wheels turn at the same speed.\r\n\r\n 2. When taking a turn: \r\n\r\nWhen the vehicle takes a turn, the inner wheel experiences resistance and tends to rotate in the opposite direction. Due to this the planet pinions start rotating about their own axis and around the sun gear and transmit more rotary motion to the outer side sun gear. So that outer sun gear rotates faster than the inner sun gear. Therefore the outer road wheel runs faster than the inner road wheel and covers a more distance.\r\n\r\n\r\nTYPES OF DIFFERENTIAL\r\nThere are three types of differential :\r\n(a)\u00a0Conventional type,\r\n(b) Non-slip or self-locking type, and\r\n(c) Double reduction type.\r\n1) Conventional Type\r\nConventional type differential described in Section 5.6 delivers the same torque to each rear wheel. If any of the wheels slips due to any reason the wheel does not rotate and the vehicle does not move.\r\n2) Non-slip or Self Locking Type\r\nNon-slip or self-locking type differential overcomes this drawback. It construction is similar to that of conventional type differential. But, two sets of clutch plates are provided additionally. Also, the ends of planet shafts are left loose in notches provided on the differential cage.\r\n3) Double Reduction Type\r\nDouble reduction type differential provides further speed reduction by additional gear. The volume of variable volume engine is not constant. In the variable volume four stroke engines, during the two strokes there will be one volume and during the other two strokes, there will be another volume. The main aim of this engine is to achieve a combined advantage of the variable compression ratio and supercharging. It is observed that overall efficiency of the engine also increases. Thus variable volume engine has the advantage of the increased volumetric efficiency due to supercharging and the increased efficiency of the engine due to both supercharging and variable compression ratio. Otto and diesel cycles are drawn and the performance of variable volume engine is compared with the supercharged engine and their simulated graphs are drawn.\r\n\r\nINTRODUCTION\r\n\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The present trend of increasing volumetric efficiency is by supercharging and turbo charging. In the above method, compressor is run to supply compressed air fuel mixture to the engine. This compressor is driven by the turbine which utilizes heat from the exhaust gas. The method used for obtaining variable compression ratio is by means of three links connecting the crank and the piston. However supercharged engine presently does not have the advantage of variable compression ratio. The purpose of the variable volume engine is to get a combined advantage of supercharging and the variable volume compression ratio and thereby getting an increased efficiency for the engine. However it is not the method of just attaching a turbo charger with the variable compression ratio engines. The combined advantage is obtained only by a single arrangement. The volume of the engine is not constant during all the four strokes and so the name, \u2018variable volume engine\u2019 is given.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nFABRICATION OF VARIABLE VOLUME ENGINE\r\n\r\n\r\nWORKING\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Let us start the working principle from the power stroke. Gas will expand only on the main piston. Thus mechanical power is transmitted to the flywheel only through the main piston. The volume of the cylinder during the starting of the power stroke is the combustion chamber volume. This is same as conventional engine. Then exhaust stroke starts and exhaust gas is allowed to escape out through exhaust valve. Then suction stroke starts. During this stroke, main piston sucks the air or air fuel mixture. Along with the main piston, sub piston also sucks air or air fuel mixture. The motion to the sub piston is given by the cam shaft through cam against the spring load. As the sub piston sucks air or air fuel mixture, the lock is pressed down from the slot by another cam. At the end of the suction stroke, the volume of the cylinder is sum of volume of the main cylinder and the volume of the extended cylinders. This will be the volume at the start of the compression stroke. Compression starts from this volume and ends at the conventional combustion chamber volume.\r\n\r\n\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 During this stroke along with the main piston, sub pistons also compress the air or air fuel mixture. The motion to the sub piston is due to the expansion force of the spring. During the forward motion of the sub piston, it slides over the lock and compresses the air or air fuel mixture. At the end of the compression stroke, sub-piston will be locked by the lock mechanism. Thus power acts only on the main piston. Thus this cycle continues and during the other two strokes, the sub pistons will not be under motion. These sub pistons due to the lock will not move during gas burst arising at the power stroke.
