In a conventional automobile the geared transmission delivers different discrete engine speed-torque power requirements to the wheels. Geared transmissions may be manual, with a clutch, or automatic, with a torque converter, but both allow the engine and the wheels to rotate at different speeds. The driver can adjust the speed and torque delivered by the engine with the accelerator and the transmission mechanically transmits nearly all of the available power to the wheels which rotate at a different rate than the engine, by a factor equal to the gear ratio for the currently selected gear. However, there are a limited number of \"gears\" or gear ratios that the driver can choose from, typically four to six. This limited gear-ratio set forces the engine crankshaft to rotate at speeds where the ICE is less efficient, i.e., where a liter of fuel produces fewer joules. Optimal engine speed-torque requirements for different vehicle driving and acceleration conditions can be gauged by limiting either tachometer RPM rate or engine noise in comparison with actual speed. When an engine is required to operate efficiently across a broad RPM range, due to its coupling to a geared transmission, manufacturers are limited in their options for improving engine efficiency, reliability, or lifespan, as well as reducing the size or weight of the engine. This is why the engine for an engine-generator is often much smaller, more efficient, more reliable, and longer life than one designed for an automobile or other variable speed application.\r\n \tHowever, a continuously variable transmission allows the driver (or the automobile computer) to effectively select the optimal gear ratio required for any desired speed or power. This boiler generates low pressure steam and it is a natural circulation boiler.\r\nConstruction of Lancashire Boiler :\r\nIt consists of\r\n\r\n \tCylindrical shell\r\n \tFurnace tubes, bottom flue and side flues\r\n \tGrate\r\n \tFire bridge\r\n \tDampers\r\n\r\nCylindrical shell\r\nIt is placed in horizontal position over a brick work. It is partly filled up with water. The water level inside the shell is well above the furnace tubes.\r\n\r\nFurnace tubes, bottom flue and side flues:\r\nTwo large internal furnace tubes (flue tubes) extend from one end to the other end of the shell. The flues are built-up of ordinary brick lined with fire bricks. One bottom flue and two side flues are formed by brick setting, as shown in the figure.\r\n\r\nGrate\r\nThe grate is provided at the front end of the main flue tubes. Coal is fed to the grate through the fire hole.\r\n\r\nFire bridge:\r\nA brickwork fire bridge is provided at the end of the grate to prevent the flow of coal and ash particles into the interior of the furnace (flue) tubes. Otherwise the coal and ash particles carried with gases form deposits on the interior of the tubes and prevent the heat transfer to the water.\r\n\r\nDampers:\r\nDampers is in the form of sliding doors are placed at the end of the side flues to control the flow of gases from side flues to the chimney flue.\r\n\r\n Lancashire Boiler - Construction and Working\r\nWorking of Lancashire boiler\r\nIn Lancashire boiler fuel is added into the grate of the boiler and burning of this make gases hot. These hot gases start their motion from grate section and enter the fire tube of the boiler. Hot gases enter at the front section of the boiler and leave the boiler from the back and enter the bottom fuel and start moving toward the front section of the boiler. At front section hot gases leave the bottom flue and enter in side flue and move again toward the back of the boiler and enter the main outlet there. There is 85% heat transfer when hot gases are in fire tube and 15% when they are in bottom and side flue. Pressure range of the boiler is about 0.7 MPa to 2 MPa and efficiency is 65 to 70%.
