These components, which include the wheel hubs, bearings, rims, tires, and fasteners, are found on both driving and non-driving axles.

Wheel Bearings
The wheel bearings form a low-friction connection between the rotating wheels and the stationary vehicle. All wheel bearings are antifriction bearings. Antifriction bearings consist of three basic parts: the inner race, the rolling element, and the outer race. Other parts of antifriction bearings include the bearing cage, which keeps the individual rolling elements separated as they turn, and seals or shields, which keep
lubricant in and dirt and water out.

Wheel bearings must be carefully selected to deal with types of loads, maximum bearing speed, where the bearing will be used on the vehicle, and what the vehicle is used for. Overall bearing size, as well as the size of the rolling elements, must be determined to give the longest service without unnecessary weight and size.

Wheel Rims
Wheel rims are the connection between the hub and the tire. The tire is installed on the rim, and the rim is bolted to the hub. In many cases, rims are made of stamped steel. Parts of the rim are stamped into shape and then welded into a final form. The center section contains the wheel mounting holes. On some wheels, an extra stamping is used to attach the wheel cover,

rim construction wheel

The flange holds the tire in place once it is installed and inflated. Steel rims are relatively light and reduce the amount of unsprung weight. They are also durable and cheap to manufacture. Some steel rims are chrome plated for appearance, while others are painted and used with wheel covers.

Modern vehicles are increasingly using rims made of materials other than steel. These rims are usually called custom rims. Common materials for custom rims are aluminum, aluminum-magnesium alloys, and composites of graphite and plastic.

Tires
Tires perform two jobs: they cushion shocks and provide traction. In their role as cushioning devices, they can be considered part of the suspension system. As traction devices, they transmit engine power, as well as braking and turning efforts, to the road.

Tire Construction
The external parts of the tire are the tread and the sidewalls. Tread designs vary depending on the tire’s application. The sidewalls form the support for the treads. The tread and sidewalls are a blend of natural rubber and a synthetic rubber called neoprene.
The internal parts of the tires are composed of plies and belts. The plies are layers of tire cord that form the general shape of the tire. Tire cords can be made of various fabric materials, including nylon, rayon, polyester, aramid, Kevlar, or fiberglass. The belts are installed directly under the tread and can be made of the same materials as the plies. Some belts are made of steel.

radial tyre construction

All modern tires are radial tires. In a radial tire, the cords in the plies cross the centerline of the tire at a right angle to the tread. Older tires were called bias tires. In a bias tire, the cords cross the centerline on a bias, or a slant. Almost all radial tires have one or two belts, which reduce tread squirming,

Wheel Fasteners
An important factor in wheel and tire design is the way the rim is mounted to the hub or axle flange. On almost all cars and trucks, the hub or axle flange contains the wheel studs. Most wheel studs are threaded bolts or studs pressed into the hub or flange. A knurled area on the rear section of the stud cuts into the hub or axle metal to keep the stud from loosening. The head of the stud resembles a bolt head and is wider than the hole in the hub or flange. The head keeps the stud from coming completely through the hole. To precisely center the wheel, a central part of the hub or flange is slightly raised and holds the center of the rim in position.

To install the wheel, the holes in the center section of the rim are placed over the studs and lug nuts are threaded. onto the studs. The lug nuts can then be tightened in a cross or star pattern. The tapered end of each lug nut matches a tapered area in the wheel mounting hole. The matching tapers help center the wheel. On most steel wheels, the lug nuts can be tightened by hand or with an impact wrench. Custom wheels have different metal expansion rates than the steel and iron hubs, and the lug nuts must be tightened to a specific torque.

A few imported vehicles use a somewhat different design. Instead of studs, the hub or flange has threaded holes. Tapered lug bolts are installed through the wheel and threaded into the holes. As with lug nuts, tightening is very important.
Parts of a wheel on a car – Wheel Components
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Types Of Industrial Robots -Robot Classification

Types Of Industrial Robots -Robot Classification

Types Of Industrial Robots -Robot Classification

These classifications are briefly described as follows :

1.Classification on the Basis of Physical Configurations

On the basis of physical configuration industrial robots are classified in four different types. They are :
(i) cartesian configuration,
(ii) cylindrical configuration,
(iii) polar configuration, and
(iv) jointed-arm configuration.

Cartesian Configuration
Robots having cartesian configurations consist of links connected by linear joints (L). As the configuration has three perpendicular slides, they are also called rectilinear robots. Robot having a similar configuration is known as Gantry Robots. Its structure resembles a gantry-type crane.

Cylindrical Configuration
In the cylindrical configuration, robots have one rotatory (R) joint at the base and linear (L) joints succeed to connect the links. The space in which this robot operates is cylindrical in shape, hence the name cylindrical configuration.

Polar Configuration
Polar robots have a work space of spherical shape. In general, the arm is linked to the base with a twisting (T) joint and rotatory (R) and or linear (L) joints. The designation of the arm for this arm can be TRL or TRR. Robots with the description of TRL are also called spherical robots. Those having the designation of TRR are called as articulated robots. It resembles a human arm in terms of configuration.

Jointed-Arm Configuration
The combination of cylindrical and articulated configurations is known as jointed-arm configuration. The arm of the robot is connected to the base with a twisting joint. Rotatory joints are used to connect the links in the arm. Generally, the rotation takes place in the vertical plane. Popular robot falling under this category is called SCARA (Selective Compliance Assembly Robot Arm). It is basically used for the assembly purpose.

Robot-Classification

Read More : Major Components of Robots – Parts Of Robots
2. Classification based on Control Systems
On the basis of the control systems adopted, robots are classified into the following categories :
(i) Point-to-point (PTP) control robot
(ii) Continuous-path (CP) control robot
(iii) Controlled-path robot

Point-to-Point (PTP) Control Robot
The PTP robot is capable of moving from one point to the other point. The locations are recorded in the control memory. The paths are not controlled by the path guide. Instead the desired path is traced by programming a series of points. Component insertion, spot welding, hole drilling, machine loading, unloading and crude assembly are some of the common applications of this type of robot.

Continuous-Path (CP) Control Point
The movement along the controlled path is performed by the CP robot. Along the controlled path, with CP control, the robot can stop any specified point. In the robot’s control memory, all the points must be stored explicitly. Straight-line motion is being carried out by these types of robots. Some continuous-path controlled robots also have the capability to follow a smooth curve path that has been defined by the programmer. Here, the programmer manually moves the robot arm through the desired path and the controller unit stores a large number of individual point locations along the path in memory.

Controlled-Path Robot
In controlled-path robots, the control equipment can develop paths of different geometry such as straight lines, circles, and interpolated curves with a high degree of accuracy. Good accuracy can be obtained at any point along the specified path. Only the start and finish points and the path definition function must be stored in the robot’s control memory. It is important to mention that all controlled-path robots have a servo capability to correct their path.

More Resources /articles
Robotics and Automation - Notes , articles , Interview Que & Ans
Manufacturing Technology Notes , Articles
Mechanical Subjectwise Basic Concept Notes ,Articles
Robotic and automation projects List - Abstract , Report
New Mechanical Projects 2020 ( All Projects Post Index List )

Types Of Industrial Robots -Robot Classification
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Squeeze Casting Process – Advantages and Disadvantages

Squeeze Casting Process – Advantages and Disadvantages

Squeeze Casting Process - Advantages and Disadvantages

As the metal starts solidifying, the upper half closes the die and applies pressure during the solidification process. The amount of pressure thus applied is significantly less than used in forging, and parts of great detail can be produced. Coring can be used with this process to form holes and recesses. The porosity is low and the mechanical properties are improved.

Both ferrous and non-ferrous materials can be produced using this method.

Squeeze casting is a method of forming metal into shapes by using two dies that are squeezed together. Most casting techniques use two dies that are squeezed together before the metal is added but, in squeeze casting, the two are pushed together after the metal is added. This is done with liquid metal, and the upper die is only removed when the metal has cooled. By using this technique, the metal will typically come out stronger, with a better grain and less metallic shrinking. This commonly is done with magnesium, aluminum and their alloys, but many other metals can be used.

Most casting techniques involve the use of two dies, but squeeze casting uses the dies in a different way. The two casts normally are placed together and liquid metal is poured into the case. With a squeeze cast, a pool of liquid metal is placed in the bottom die and an upper die comes in and squeezes the metal into a shape. Pressure is being applied via the upper die, so this is not strictly casting, as it adds forging to create a hybrid technique.

Squeeze casting process

Only liquid metal can be used in this application. While materials such as plastic can melt at high temperatures, this technique will not be suitable to cast plastic. After the upper die is set, workers wait until the metal is completely cool. Once cool, the upper die will be released and the required shape will have been cast into the now-solid metal.

Non ferrous alloys like aluminum, magnesium, and copper alloy components are readily manufactured using this process . The squeeze casting process, combining the advantages of the casting and forging processes, has been widely used to produce quality castings . Because of the high pressure applied during solidification, porosities caused by both gas and shrinkage can be prevented or eliminated . The cooling rate of the casting can be increased by applying high pressure during solidification, since that contact between the casting and the die is improved by pressurization, which results in the foundation of fine-grained structures

Casting parameters

Casting temperatures depend on the alloy and the part geometry. It is employed for mass production of circular casting as the castings produced by this process are free from impurities. Due to centrifugal force, the castings produced will be of a high-density type and of good strength. The castings produced promote directional solidification as the colder metal (less temperature molten metal) is thrown to outside of casting and molten metal near the axis or rotation. The cylindrical parts and pipes for handling gases are most adaptable to this process
Casting Processes
The Casting Process involves pouring liquid metal into a mold cavity and allowing it to solidify to obtain the final casting. The flow of molten metal into the mold cavity depends on several factors like minimum section thickness of the part, presence of corners, a non-uniform cross-section of the cast, and so on. The casting processes can be broadly classified into expendable mold casting and permanent mold casting processes.

Read More: Types Of Casting Processes and their Applications
Types of Centrifugal Casting
Centrifugal casting processes are mainly of three types which are as follows.

(1) True centrifugal casting

 Water down method :
 De-lavand method
 Sand spun process

(2) Semi-centrifugal casting and
(3) Centrifuged casting
True centrifugal casting:
In this process mould is rotated rapidly about its central axis as the metal is poured into it. Centrifugal force is utilized to distribute liquid metal over the outer surface of the mould. Centrifugal force tends the poured metal and the freezing metal to fly outward, away from the axis of rotation, and this tendency creates high pressure on the metal or casting while the lighter slag, oxides, and other inclusions being lighter, get pushed towards the center. The axis may be horizontal, vertical, or inclined. Casting cools and solidifies from outside towards the axis of rotation; so it results in good directional solidification.

Types of True Centrifugal casting:

Water down method: Water town method is a method of which, a heavy cast-iron rotor is used as a chill mould for the manufacturing of larger gun tubes. The mould is coated with refractory wash and normally rotates at 1300 rpm. A weighed amount of liquid metal is poured into a pouring basin provided with a short spout in the mould where the diameter of the spout can be varied and rate of entry of melt can be adjusted so that the melt can evenly distribute into the mould cavity without cracking the solidification.
De-lavand method : In De-lavand method, a thin-walled metal mould is provided with a water jacket for cooling, is used for making of soil pipes and similar tubular like objects. The rotating machine and the mould are mounted on a plane inclined at a slight angle to the horizontal.
Sand spun process : In the process of sand spun, the chilling rate of the metal is lower than other
methods because of the sand lining rammed inside the steel mould. The thermal protection barrier provided by the sand layer provided inside the mould as lining reduces heat shock lessens checking of the mould surface and prevents surface laps on castings caused by premature freezing of the metal.

Horizontal Centrifugal Casting

In this process, the mold is rotated rapidly about its central axis as the metal is poured into it. Because of the centrifugal force, a continuous pressure will be acting on the metal as it solidifies. The slag, oxides and other inclusions being lighter, get separated from the metal and segregate towards the center.
This process is normally used for the making of hollow pipes, tubes, hollow bushes, etc., which are axisymmetric with a concentric hole.
Since the metal is always pushed outward because of the centrifugal force, no core needs to be used for making the concentric hole.
The mold can be rotated about a vertical, horizontal or an inclined axis or about its horizontal and vertical axes simultaneously.
The length and outside diameter are fixed by the mold cavity dimensions while the inside diameter is determined by the amount of molten metal poured into the mold.

Horizontal centrifugal casting

Vertical Centrifugal Casting :

In centrifugal casting, centrifugal force plays a major role in shaping and feeding of the casting.
In this process mould is rotated rapidly about its central axis as the metal is poured into it.
Centrifugal force is utilized to distribute liquid metal over the outer surface of the mould. Hollow cylinders and other annular shapes are formed in this way. Centrifugal force tends the poured metal and the freezing metal to fly outward, away from the axis of rotation, and this tendency creates high pressure on the metal or casting while the lighter slag, oxides, and other inclusions being lighter, get pushed towards the centre.
The axis may be horizontal, vertical, or inclined. Casting cools and solidifies from outside towards the axis of rotation; so it results in good directional solidification. Hence castings are free from shrinkage. It may be produced in metal or sand lined mould, depending largely upon the quantity desired.

horizontal and vertical casting process
Semi-Centrifugal Casting

It is similar to true centrifugal casting but only with a difference that a central core is used to form the inner surface. Semi- centrifugal casting setup is shown in Fig. .
This casting process is generally used for articles that are more complicated than those possible in true centrifugal casting but are axisymmetric in nature. A particular shape of the casting is produced by mold and core and not by centrifugal force.
The centrifugal force aids proper feeding and helps in producing the castings free from porosity. The article produced by this process is shown in Fig. Symmetrical objects namely wheel having arms like flywheel, gears and back wheels are produced by this process

Semi centrifugal casting
Centrifuge Casting :
When a group of small molds are arranged in a circle (to balance each other) around the central vertical axis of the flask and the flask is rotated about the vertical axis, the process is called centrifuge casting. It is clear that the molds are not symmetrical about the axis of rotation, that is, the axis of casting and the axis of rotation do not coincide with one another. Here again the centrifugal force is used to obtain higher pressure on the metal and get more dense castings. The molten metal will flow to all the molds under centrifugal force from a central feeding sprue.

centrifuging Casting
Centrifugal Casting Process Parameter :

 The mold rotation speeds (rpm)
The pouring temperature ( ºC )
The mold initial preheated temperature prior to pouring
 Centrifugal Force ( N )
The spinning period of time ( min. )
The G factor - G-factor (GF) as the ratio of centrifugal force to weight.

Advantages of Centrifugal casting :
1. Relatively very light impurities move inwards towards the center. So they can be removed easily thus helping in producing sound castings.
2. Gates and risers are not needed.
3. This technique is best suited for the mass production of symmetrical objects and Castings yield is very high in some cases it is even equal to 100%.
4. Castings acquire high density, high mechanical strength, and fine-grained structure.
5. Inclusions and impurities are lighter.
6. These castings have a directional solidification starting from outside to inside.
Disadvantages of Centrifugal Casting :
1. Skilled labors are to be employed for this process.
2. An inaccurate diameter of the inner surface of the casting.
3. Only some shapes can be generated by this casting process.
4. Not all alloys can be cast in this way.
5. Centrifugal castings require very high investments.
Applications of Centrifugal Casting :
1. Bush bearings.
2. Clutch plates.
3. Paper making rollers.
4. Piston rings.
5. Cylinder liners.
6. Pipes of water gas sewage.
Centrifugal Casting – Types, Working, Advantages, Disadvantages
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Major Parts of mechanical press and its Function

Major Parts of mechanical press and its Function

Major Parts of mechanical press and its Function

Primarily, the mechanical press transforms the rotational force of a motor into a translational force vector that performs the pressing action. Therefore, the energy in a mechanical press comes from the motor. These types of presses are generally faster than hydraulic or screw presses, (actually the screw press may also be classified as a mechanical press). Unlike some presses, in a mechanical press, the application of force varies in both speed and magnitude throughout the distance of the stroke. When performing a manufacturing operation using a mechanical press, the correct range of the stroke is essential.
Mechanical Press Basic Parts Diagram :
parts of mechanical parts

Presses are chosen based on the characteristics of the manufacturing process. Mechanical press machine tools are commonly used in metal forging manufacture, and sheet metal working. The desired application of force will dictate the type of machine required. Extrusion will often necessitate a more consistent force over a longer distance. However, a mechanical press may often be a good choice for impact extrusion, since a fast, quickly repeatable application of force over a limited distance is what is needed for that type of manufacturing process. The most powerful mechanical presses in modern manufacturing industry will have a press capacity of about 12,000 tons, (24,000,000 lbs).
Mechanical Press Parts :
Base:

The base is the supporting member of the press and provides arrangement for tilting and clamping the frame in an inclined press.

Frame:

All presses except the straight side type have "C" shaped frame to take up the vertical thrust of the ram.

Bolster plate:

The bolster plate is a flat plate fitted on the base for supporting the die block and other accessories of the press.

Ram:

The ram is the reciprocating member of the press that slides within the press and guides and supports the punch at its bottom end.

Pitman:

The pitman is the connecting rod in a crank or eccentric driven press. Finite Element Analysis is a numerical method of deconstructing a complex system into very small pieces (of user-designated size) called elements. The software implements equations that govern the behaviour of these elements and solves them all, creating a comprehensive explanation of how the system acts as a whole. These results then can be presented in tabulated, or graphical forms. This type of analysis is typically used for the design and optimization of a system far too complex to analyze by hand. Systems that may fit into this category are too complex due to their geometry, scale, or governing equations.

ANSYS is the standard FEA teaching tool within the Mechanical Engineering Department at many colleges. ANSYS is also used in Civil and Electrical Engineering, as well as the Physics and Chemistry departments.
Ansys full form
What does ANSYS stand for?
ANSYS was founded in 1970. by John A. Swanson as *Swanson Analysis Systems, Inc* (SASI).
In 1994, New owners took SASI's leading software, called ANSYS, as their flagship product and designated ANSYS, Inc. as the new company name.
There is no proved explanation but you can say that ANSYS represents ‘ANalysis SYStems’

ANSYS - Analysis of Systems
ANSYS provides a cost-effective way to explore the performance of products or processes in a virtual environment. This type of product development is termed virtual prototyping.

With virtual prototyping techniques, users can iterate various scenarios to optimize the product long before the manufacturing is started. This enables a reduction in the level of risk, and in the cost of ineffective designs. The multifaceted nature of ANSYS also provides a means to ensure that users are able to see the effect of a design on the whole behavior of the product, be it electromagnetic, thermal, mechanical etc.

Ansys CFD
Generic Steps to Solving any Problem in ANSYS
Steps of Ansys modal analysis
Like solving any problem analytically, you need to define (1) your solution domain, (2) the physical model, (3) boundary conditions and (4) the physical properties. You then solve the problem and present the results. In numerical methods, the main difference is an extra step called mesh generation. This is the step that divides the complex model into small elements that become solvable in an otherwise too complex situation. Below describes the processes in terminology slightly more attune to the software.

Build Geometry - Construct a two or three dimensional representation of the object to be modeled and tested using the work plane coordinate system within ANSYS.
Define Material Properties - Now that the part exists, define a library of the necessary materials that compose the object (or project) being modeled. This includes thermal and mechanical properties.
Generate Mesh - At this point ANSYS understands the makeup of the part. Now define how the modeled system should be broken down into finite pieces.
Apply Loads - Once the system is fully designed, the last task is to burden the system with constraints, such as physical loadings or boundary conditions.
Obtain Solution - This is actually a step, because ANSYS needs to understand within what state (steady state, transient… etc.) the problem must be solved.
Present the Results - After the solution has been obtained, there are many ways to present ANSYS’ results, choose from many options such as tables, graphs, and contour plots.

Specific Capabilities of ANSYS

 Structural
 Thermal
 Fluid Flow
 Magnetic
 Acoustics / Vibration
 Coupled Fields , Etc.
Ansys full form – Steps of Ansys modal analysis
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/axial_inducer_-_ansys_cfx_and_ansys_mechanical-min-300x300.png
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

« PREV Page 1 … Page 207 Page 208 Page 209 Page 210 Page 211 … Page 338 NEXT »

About Us

LearnMech.Com is a Mechanical Project-oriented platform run by Sachin Thorat who is a B-Tech Graduate in Mechanical Engineering.
