Garvin's classic paper, "What Does Product Quality Really Mean?" lists "eight dimensions of quality." These form a good starting point for a list of desirable attributes for a product design. Garvin's list includes the following:

Performance: How well the product functions
Features: How many secondary characteristics the product has to enhance its basic function
Reliability: Defined by some as quality in the time dimension; how well the product maintains its quality
Conformance: How well the product conforms to the specifications or standards set for it
Durability: How long the product lasts in use
Serviceability: How easy the product is to maintain
Aesthetics: How attractive the product is
Perceived quality: How high the users believe the quality of the product is, that is, quality reputation of the product

To these desirable attributes, manufacturability, how easy and economical the product is to make, should certainly be added. Other desirable characteristics, not mentioned by Garvin, are safety, environmental friendliness, user friendliness or ergonomics, short time to market, and upgradability.

If customers are satisfied with the product after, for example, a year of ownership and at least moderate use and would recommend it to other potential buyers, then perhaps it can be said that the product is of high quality. Other measures, such as whether it conformed to some specifications, whether it had an acceptable reject rate, whether it was made under ISO 9000 conditions, or whether the company producing it got the Malcolm Baldrige award are less meaningful, in the author's opinion, than the customer's evaluation. Customer satisfaction is the prime measure of product quality.
Importance of Design for Quality
Design is more responsible for the quality than anything else. The designers determine the number of component in a specific part/product, decide which are to be procured externally, design the rest of the components and specify indirectly how they can be manufactured, determine how the parts must be assembled, and specify the overall function of the components in the final assembled part. In other words, the designers largely influence the entire procurement, manufacturing and assembly cycles of any small part or large component. Although manufacturing processes are often linked to the final quality of a part, both design and manufacturing are responsible for the final quality inherited by a part or component. If the quality is envisaged appropriately in the design procedure, the quality in manufacturing can also be ensured at lesser expenses and the cost of inspection reduces significantly. This leads to the concept of Design for Quality.

quality for design

Benefits of Design for Quality (DFQ)

(1) The DFQ process allows the engineer to identify, plan for and manage factors that impact the robustness and reliability of the products in the design process.
(2) DFQ reduces or eliminates the cost of quality that can be envisaged as the cost incurred in the inspection and rework, in the procurement of replacement materials. Appropriate DFQ procedure can also avoid defects and errors, scrap, degradation of factory/machine capacity, re-qualifications/re-certifications expenses, and overhead demands
(3) Improved and consistent quality of parts provide better appeal to the customers that obviously lead to greater stability of the manufacturing shops and can create greater amount of opportunities.
Design For Quality – Concept, Benefits of Design for Quality (DFQ)
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to 5S Lean Manufacturing -What is 5S Housekeeping

5S Lean Manufacturing -What is 5S Housekeeping

5S Lean Manufacturing - What is 5S Housekeeping

In fact, it forms the foundation for all improvement efforts. It is an acronym for five Japanese words and denotes a step-by-step approach for developing a clean and well-organized workplace.

The term workplace could mean shop floor, office, manager's desk, garage, store, or any other place. It is more than housekeeping. 5S is very popular in Japan and is becoming common in other countries too. A well-organized workplace provides a healthy and safe work environment and also improves productivity by reducing time for locating tools and materials, damage to the materials, etc A well-designed and implemented program of 55 would instill discipline and change the attitude of employees toward work. It is considered one of the foundation level techniques for continuous improvement.

what is 5s - 5s housekeeping- 5s lean manufacturing

5s activities are intended to qualitatively change the ways in which people think and behave, and, through these changes, to alter the quality of both equipment maintenance and the work environment. Before 5s activities are begun, everyone involved should clearly understand and codify in writing the goals and meaning of the 5S's for each individual company and work environment. Furthermore, since 5s activities must be carried out with determination and concerted effort, it is helpful to devise slogans. Unless the specific rules are made highly pragmatic, it is hard to put them into practice. 5'S'represents five action items that ark did with some kinds of persuasion. However, these aspects should become a pan of the habit in individuals.
The 5S List :
The 5 S was invented in Japan and it stands for the five Japanese words that start with the letter ‘S’: seiri, seiton, seiso, seiketsu, and shitsuke. An equivalent set of five ‘S’ words in English has been adopted to preserve the 5 S acronym- sort, set(in place), shine, standardize and sustain- in the English usage.
1. Seiri (sort)
2. Seiton (straighten or streamline)
3. Seiso (shine)
4. Seiketsu (standardize)
5. Shitsuke (sustain)
1. Seiri (Sort)

The first step of the 5 S processes, seiri, refers to the act of throwing away all the unwanted, unnecessary and unrelated materials in the workplace. The people involved in seiri must not feel sorry about having to throw away things. The idea is to ensure that everything left in the workplace related to the work. Even the number of necessary items in the workplace must be kept to its absolute minimum. Because of seiri, the simplification of tasks, an effective use of space, and the careful purchase of the items follow.
The most effective method to implement Seiri is to place/ attach a red tag to all unneeded items and move them to a location outside the work area for storage until disposed off.
Sorting is an excellent way to free up valuable space and eliminate such things as obsolete stock, used and broken tools, irreparable jigs and fixtures, non-renewable jobs, surplus stocks etc.

Red Tagging:

A method to identify items that will eventually be removed from an area.

Contains Data describing:

 Red Tag No.
 Name/Description of item
 Reason for Tagging
 Date Tagged
 Current Location
Create a log maintained by the Red Tag Area Manager.

Benefits expected from Seiri (sort):

1. Seiri (sorts) saves productive work.
2. It prevents incidents of unnecessary things.
3. It provides clarity as to what is in stock.
4. It reduces unnecessary handling, as there are less number of items to handle.
5. It reduces the number of lockers/cabinets for storage (as numbers of filed papers/items stored are reduced)

Red tag lag sample

red tag lag sample
2. Seiton ( Set in order)

Seiton means systematic, orderly, efficient, and effective arrangement of items in use.

For effective storage, answers to the following questions are required.

What items are to be stored?
Where should the items be stored?
What quantity of the items is generally required to be stored?
Are there any special storage requirements?
How often the items are to be stored or retrieved?
Therefore, section means, “to arrange correctly following the correct method of doing activities and making thorough preparation so that the activities can be performed even if they occur abruptly.”
Since arranging correctly is a natural follow up activity after segregation, seiri and seiton are often used and practiced together. Some areas which often needs attention are unlabeled tool cribs, cluttered shelves./ lockers, office files, and things lying on the shop floor.

Thus this step of 5 S process can be carried out in the following manner step by step:-

Set in Order:

Review the process flow in the area.

 Flow Process Chart.
 30-second storage and retrieval.

Motion Study Analysis.

Position things to promote good posture and safe lifting/retrieval.
 Minimize body motions and travel

Establish a layout proposal to optimize a safe workspace:

 Safety concerns all addressed
 Material flows
 Tools accessible
 Safety covers in place
 Anti-fatigue mats
 Defined and straight aisles

Create the Visual Workplace

Tools labeled and/or outlined &Visual indicators
Material placement markers or outlines on the floor

Benefits of Seiton:

1. Easy retrieval of materials.
2. Time taken to search is minimized.
3. Unnecessary purchase is avoided.
4. Categorize files, mails, papers, etc. based on specific criterion viz. subject/title;
project; customer/supplier/department/usage.
5. Compartmentalize cabinets/drawers/shelves/desks.
6. Determine the quantity of each item and plan storage according to pre-fixed quantity.
7. Plan storage to ensure easy retrievability (within pre-set target time).
8. Color code items for easy identification.
9. Keep files/binders vertically and not laid out.
10. Plan storage of compact disks to prevent them from getting scratched.
11. Install visual control for the replenishment of stocks and checking missing items.
12. Observe a ‘Paper destruction day’ once every quarter of the year.
3. Seiso (shine)

Seiso is cleaning the workplace completely so that there is no dust on the floor, machines, and equipment. The objective of seiso is to return items, jigs/fixtures, molds, equipment, and other utilities and workplaces used during work to their original clean and polished condition by removing scrap and leftovers and wiping all surfaces to make dust/dirt free. The presence of dust can cause abrasions, scratches, blockages, leakages, bad connection (electrical defects), quality defects (e.g. painting on dusty surfaces), variability (e.g. wrong measurements and lack of process control). Since while cleaning, the surfaces are seen and touched, Seiso prevents potential problems by discovering abnormalities, which are still in the initial stages. People generally take pride in working in clean and clutter-free area and sparkling/shining helps to create ownership of the equipment and facility.
Cleaning is not a one-time activity. Some sort of standards of cleaning needs to be developed and regular follow up is necessary to sustain this improvement. This can be done with the help of making checklists the example is shown in below.

Shine Checklist

A finalized checklist should be posted at the area in the specified location.
The list should include the “target areas” that were identified as trouble spots.
An inventory of materials necessary for the cleaning should be listed.

The activities necessary to implement Seiso in the organization

1. Keep your own machines and workplace clean through sweeping floor and surroundings, dusting to make dirt-free, cobweb free wiping to make oil/grease, free polishing and painting.
2. Clean machines/worktable before the start of the daily routine. Eliminate leakage/spillage.
3. Brainstorm for creative ideas to make cleaning and inspection easier.
4. Clean even places most people don’t notice. Remove scrap to avoid scratching.
5. Clean elements to remove dirt that cause sub-standard performance.
6. Clean electrical contacts to avoid bad connections (e.g. electrical contacts, pushbuttons, switches, etc.)
7. Dust off dirt inside the computer to avoid play up.
8. Remove oil and dust before painting to ensure a better finish.
9. Prepare a schedule for cleaning and assign clear-cut responsibilities.
10. Conduct inspection to unearth problems, identify root causes, and establish corrective action.
11. Carry out daily follow-up cleaning to sustain this improvement.
12. Clean up machine, jigs/fixtures, tools/gauges, etc. after use.
13. Place trash bins at strategic places and empty them at the end of the shift/day.
14. Clean up supply lines and coolant tanks; spray point booth, water storage tank, material handling trolleys.
15. Dust off parts, components, items lying on shelves in store.

Benefits of Seiso:

1. Early identification of problems like cracks/oil leakage.
2. Greater confidence of customers.
3. Improved product quality.
4. Pride for the employees.
4. Seiketsu (Standardize)

Seiketshu is repeatedly following of “Seiri”, “Seiton” and “Seiso”, developing and implementing standard operating procedures and maintaining safe and hygienic conditions at work leading to serene atmosphere. Seiketshu embraces both personal cleanliness and that of the work environment.
It emphasis on 5-S standardization and visual management. Standardization ensures that all assignments are absolutely clear and there is no undefined area. Visual management ensures that communication is simple and effective. Together, they (i.e. standardization
and visual management) provide an effective way of continuous improvement.

Guidelines

Make standards obvious from a distance.
Necessary information is located on or near the process it relates to.
 Everyone can understand the standards.
Visuals created: Checklists, Labels, Material placements, Safety Equipment labeled and accessible, Gauge limits are labeled.
Establish and implement areas of standardization- Documents, instructions, labels, signage, Material handling, color codes, Review cycles, Also, standardize the work itself, How is the work process done properly in this area?, Create/revise Standard Work, Post-it prominently in the work area.

The activities necessary to implement Seiketsu in the organization are:

1. Mark aisles of sufficient width and ensure that they are free from obstruction.
2. Standardize best practices in your work areas and implement them as effective work standards.
3. Create as many visual control system as possible such as:
- OK/Rejection.
- Reworks stickers/labels.
- “Danger zones” marks on meters and switches.
- Warning signs and marks (e.g. no smoking warning sign in paint area)
- Fire extinguishers and exit signs.
4. Display department/office labels and nameplates. Ensure proper ventilation and exhaust.
5. Introduce color for easy and faster identification (color codes as shown in above).
6. Place first aid boxes and fire extinguishers at suitable locations and display location maps for fire extinguishers at strategic places.
5. Shitsuke (Sustain)

Shitsuke means self-discipline. It denotes commitment to maintain orderliness and to practice the first 4S as a way of life. The emphasis of shitsuke is the elimination of the bad habits and constant practice of the good ones. Once a true shitsuke is achieved, the
personnel voluntarily observe cleanliness and orderliness at all times, without having to be reminded by the management. One must train oneself to keep the 4S principles and realize that by following the 5S, ultimately the work will become easier.
Shitsuke is the most difficult ‘S’ to implement and achieve. Since human nature is to resist change, many organization returns to the status quo (i.e. end up with a dirty cluttered shop) a few weeks following the implementation of 5S.

Methodology of Shitsuke (Sustain)

1. Monitor the refined methods consistently.
2. Maintain the defined methods for continuous improvement.
3. Establish norms and follow them.
4. Keep repeating the 1 to 4 ‘S’

Benefits of Shitsuke (Sustain)

1. Discipline in the system.
2. Waste reduction.
3. High morale.
4. Neat and cleanliness.
5. Easier to work.
6. Lesser stress at work.
5S Action List
Therefore, in order to ensure 5S gets into the blood of the organization, the following action list needs to be put into place.

a. Arrange employees training in 5S technique and provide pamphlets / easy to read booklets on 5S practices to all employees.
b. Practice pick up components/papers/rubbish and promote friendly competition & competitive benchmarking among the departments for 5S.
c. Observe paper destruction day (say 15th/16th day of the month following each quarter.
d. Conduct fire drills and practice dealing with emergencies.
e. Replace equipment after its economic retentive period.
f. Work together on specific 5S projects.
g. Insist that employees attend works in uniform and wear safety shoes.
h. Set aside a short period (say 10 minutes) when everyone must concentrate on 5S (e.g. one day to ensure everything in place, another day to ensure there is no oil or
air leaks.
i. Mark 5 minutes at the beginning or end of the day to practice 5S.
j. Use visuals to draw attention to 5-S non-conformances and achievements over the period and to create a competitive point.
k. Audit 5-S housekeeping and follow-up on non-conformances.
l. Display correct work instructions in the shop and offices and ensure employees perform work according to the laid down standard operation procedures
5s Lean Manufacturing- 5s Housekeeping Summary:
5s summary
Advantages of 5S System
Benefits of 5-S system are as follows,

1. Reduction in errors/defects due to standardized procedures.
2. Consistent and improved quality.
3. Higher productivity.
4. Lesser accidents.
5. Higher morale of employees.
6. Gets to work in a clean, organized, and clutter-free workplace.
7. Lesser time to retrieve things when required.
8. More useable space.
9. Reduction in machine downtime.
Disadvantages of using the 5S method:
The major problems with 5S appear when it is not properly understood, used, or implemented.

1 Misunderstanding of what 5S accomplishes
2 Resistance to change ·
3 Not addressing problems in the workplace ·
4 Lack of management support
5S Lean Manufacturing -What is 5S Housekeeping
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Solidworks for Students 2018 – How to Buy Solidworks Student Edition

Solidworks for Students 2018 – How to Buy Solidworks Student Edition

Solidworks for Students 2018 - How to Buy Solidworks Student Edition

It is therefore important that technicians and engineers should have knowledge on pneumatic systems air operated valves accessories. Pneumatic system consists of a compressor plant, pipe lines control valves and drive members. The air is compressed in an air compressor and from the compressor plant the flow media is transmitted to the pneumatic cylinder through a well laid pipe line system. So keeping in mind about the importance of pneumatic system are introducing a project called Automatic pneumatic water pumping system. Here all need is a compressor pneumatic cylinder, pneumatic cylinder, piston pump. The aim of the project is pneumatic operated piston water pump. The piston is reciprocated with the help of a pneumatic cylinder solenoid valve. There are two cylinders are used in this project, one for pneumatic cylinder and another one for hydraulic cylinder. This pumping system also can be used in pumping of water supply in agriculture lands, Industrial pumping and also in domestical applications.

INTRODUCTION
The aim of the project is pneumatic operated water pumping system. Radial plunger pneumatic operated water pumping system are pump in which the piston is provided for the pumping action. The piston is reciprocated with the help of a pneumatic cylinder.

A pump is a Mechanical device which converts mechanical energy into hydraulic energy.

This pump is classified into two types;
TYPES OF PUMP
i. Positive Displacement and
ii. Non-Positive Displacement pump
CONCEPT OF MECHANISM
The air is compressed in an air compressor and from the compressor plant the flow media is transmitted to the pneumatic cylinder through a well laid pipe line system. So keeping in mind about the importance of pneumatic system are introducing a project called Automatic pneumatic water pumping system. Here all need is a compressor pneumatic cylinder, connecting links and a control system. The
aim of the project is pneumatic operated water pumping system, radial plunger pneumatic water pumping system are reciprocating pump is provided for the pumping action. The piston is reciprocated with the help of a pneumatic cylinder solenoid valve. There are two cylinders are used in this project, one for pneumatic cylinder and another one for hydraulic cylinder.

The two outlet ports are connected to an actuator (Cylinder). The pneumatic activates is a double acting, single rod cylinder. The cylinder
output is coupled to further purpose. The piston end has a water horning effect to prevent sudden thrust at extreme ends. The end of the cylinder two Non return valve is connected for both of the side. One Non return valve for suction side and another one non return valve are for delivery side.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
These pumps deliver a highly pulsed flow. If a smooth flow is required then the discharge flow system has to include additional features such as accumulators. An automatic relief valve set at a safe pressure is used on the discharge side of all positive displacement pumps. The performance of a pump is characterized by its net head h, which is defined as the change in Bernoulli head between the suction side and the
delivery side of the pump. h is expressed in equivalent column height of water.

Design and Fabrication of Piston Operated Water Pump

ADVANTAGES

This is of compact in size
 Less Maintenance is enough
The oil or water pumped is of higher pressure
Quite running and smooth operation is achieved.
 Higher efficiency
 Full efficient positive displacement pump
 Effective working principle
It does not have any Prime mover, like electric motor related to the unit.
As the air is freely available, we can utilize the air to pumping the water and hence it is economical.
 Less Maintenance.

Reference and Calculation :
http://www.ijetmas.com/admin/resources/project/paper/f201706121497274711.pdf
Design and Fabrication of Piston Operated Water Pump
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/Design-and-Fabrication-of-Piston-Operated-Water-Pump-300x256.jpg
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to What is Poka Yoke in Lean Manufacturing ? Autodesk developed AutoCAD LT to have an entry-level CAD package to compete in the lower price level. AutoCAD LT, priced at $495, became the first AutoCAD product priced below $1000. It is sold directly by Autodesk and can also be purchased at computer stores (unlike the full version of AutoCAD, which must be purchased from official Autodesk dealers).

As of the 2011 release the AutoCAD LT MSRP has risen to $1200. While there are hundreds of small differences between the full AutoCAD package and AutoCAD LT, there are a few recognized major differences[21] in the software's features:

3D Capabilities: AutoCAD LT lacks the ability to create, visualize and render 3D models as well as 3D printing.
Network Licensing: AutoCAD LT cannot be used on multiple machines over a network.
Customization: AutoCAD LT does not support customization with LISP, ARX, .NET and VBA.
Management and automation capabilities with Sheet Set Manager and Action Recorder.
CAD standards management tools.
AutoCAD LT 2015 introduced Desktop Subscription (rental) from $360 per year

There are some distinct differences between AutoCAD Lt and its big brother, AutoCAD. For many, the main thought is, 'oh, it's if you just want to do 2D or 3D, AutoCAD Lt is just for 2D and full AutoCAD is for 3D', but that is just the tip of the iceberg when exploring the differences. Full AutoCAD has many more advantages over its cut down version and this applies to both the Windows versions and the Apple MAC versions.

autocad-full-vs-autocad lt
Autocad Vs Autocad LT- Difference Between Autocad and Autocad lt

Autocad FullAutocad LT

Design every detail with 2D and 3D CAD software.
