What Do you know about Casting ?
The Process of producing metal parts by pouring molten metal in to the mould cavity of the required shape and allowing the metal to solidify. The solidified metal piece is called as casting.

Casting Process- Mechanical Interview Questions with answers

2. What is draft allowance? How is it provided for patterns?
It the vertical faces of pattern are perpendicular to parting line, the edges of mould may damaged when the pattern is removed from the sand. Hence the vertical faces are mode taper for easy removal of pattern. This slight taper given on the vertical sides of pattern in caused draft allowance.

3. What are the common allowances provided on pattern?
The various types of pattern allowances normally given are;
1. Shrinkage allowance
2. Machining or finish allowance
3. Draft or taper allowance
4. Distortion or camber allowance
5. Rapping or shake allowance

4. Is pattern differ from casting?
Pattern is slightly larger in size as compared to the casting. Pattern may be in two or three pieces where as a casting is in one piece.

5. Name the various pattern materials.

 Wood – Teak wood, white pine etc.
 Metal – cast iron, brass, aluminium etc.
 Plaster
 Plastic
 Wax

6. What are the different types of patterns used in foundries?
Solid or single piece pattern, match plate pattern, split pattern, sweep pattern, skeleton Pattern, segmental pattern, loose piece pattern, shell pattern.

7. What are the uses of runner and riser?
Runner:

 It is used to make a sprue a hole in the cope.
 It receives the molten metal from the pouring basin and passes to the cavity.

Riser:

 It supplies excess molten metal to the solidifying casting.
 It allows the escape of air.

8. What are chaplets?
Some times it is not possible to provide sufficient support for a core in the mould being
poured, if the cores are bigger in size. In such cases the core is supported with rigid metal
pieces called chaplets.

9. Name four different casting defects.

 Shifts - Two halves mismatching or casting
 Hot tear - Internal or external cracks
 Fins - Thin projection of parting line
 Inclusions - Foreign material present in casting

10. What function of core ?

Functions of core are:

 Core provides a means of forming the main internal cavity for hollow casting.
 Core provides external undercut feature.
 Cores can be inserted to obtain deep recesses in the casting.
 Cores can be used to increase the strength of the mould.

10. Explain the term fettling.
Fettling is the name given to cover all those operations which help the casting to give a good appearance. It includes the removal of cores, sand, gates, risers, runners and other Unwanted projections from the casting.

11. Alternating layers of metal and ferrous alloys, coke, and limestone are fed into the furnace from the top. A schematic diagram of a cupola is shown in Figure. This diagram of a cupola illustrates the furnace's cylindrical shaft lined with refractory and the alternating layers of coke and metal scrap. The molten metal flows out of a spout at the bottom of the cupola.
Description of Cupola

 The cupola consists of a vertical cylindrical steel sheet and lined inside with acid refractory bricks. The lining is generally thicker in the lower portion of the cupola as the temperature are higher than in upper portion
 There is a charging door through which coke, pig iron, steel scrap and flux is charged
 The blast is blown through the tuyeres
 These tuyeres are arranged in one or more row around the periphery of cupola
 Hot gases which ascends from the bottom (combustion zone) preheats the iron in the preheating zone
 Cupolas are provided with a drop bottom door through which debris, consisting of coke, slag etc. can be discharged at the end of the melt
 A slag hole is provided to remove the slag from the melt
 Through the tap hole molten metal is poured into the ladle
 At the top conical cap called the spark arrest is provided to prevent the spark emerging to outside.

Schematic Diagram Of Cupola Furnace :
Diagram of Cupola Furnace

Operation:-
First the drop door at the bottom is closed. Sand bed with slope towards tap hole is rammed. Coke bed of suitable height is prepared above the sand bed and is ignited through the tap hole. After proper ignition, alternate layers of charge, flux and coke are fed through the charge door. Then the charge is allowed to soak in the heat and the air blast is turned on. Within 5 to 10 mins, the molten metal is collected through the tap hole. When enough metal is collected in the well of the cupola, the slag is drained off through the slag hole. Then the molten metal is collected in the ladles and is transported to the moulds with a minimum time loss.
Fluxes are added in the charge to remove the oxides and other impurities present in the metal. The flux commonly used is lime stone (CaCO3) in a proportion of 2 to 4% of the metal charge. Others fluxes used are dolomite, sodium carbonate, calcium carbide. Flux reacts with oxides to form compounds having low melting point and lighter so that it will float on the metal pool.
Charge calculations:-
Carbon:-
When charge comes through the coke bed, some amount of carbon is picked up by the metal depending on the temperature and the time when the metal is in contact with the coke. It is of the order of 0.15% carbon.

Silicon:-
It is Oxidised in the cupola and there will be a loss of 10% silicon. It may be as high as 30%. To increase the silicon content, ferrosilicon is added to the metal.

Manganese:-
There is a loss of 15 to 20% manganese during melting process. The content of manganese can be increased by the addition of ferromanganese.

Sulphur-
There will a sulphur pick up in a range of 0.03 to 0.05%.
Cupola Furnace-Diagram,Construction,Working
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Some important terminologies used in measurement

Some important terminologies used in measurement

Things Should Known by Quality Engineer related measurement.

Sensitivity means the ability of a measuring device to detect small differences in a quantity being measured. For instance if a very small change in voltage applied to 2 voltmeters results in a perceptible change in the indication of one instrument and not in the other. Then the former (A0 is send to be more sensitive. Numerically it can be determined in this way for example if on a dial indicator the scale spacing is 1.0 mm and the scale division value is 0.01 mm then sensitivity =100. it is also called amplification factor or gearing ratio.

Sensitivity Of Measuring instrument

It is possible that the more sensitive instrument may be subjected to drifts due to thermal and other effects so that its indications may be less repeatable than these of the instrument of lower sensitivity.

2.Readability

Readability refers to the case with which the readings of a measuring instrument can be read. It is the susceptibility of a measuring device to have its indication converted into more meaningful number. Fine and widely spaced graduation lines ordinarily improve the readability. If the graduation lines are very finely spaced the scale will be more readable by using the microscope however with naked eye the readability will be poor.

In order to make micrometer more readable they are provided with vernier scale. It can also be improve by using magnifying devices.

3.Repeatability

It is the ability of the measuring instrument to repeat the same results when measurement are

carried out

 By same observer
 With the same instrument
 Under the same conditions
 Without any change in location
 Without change in the method of measurement
 And the measurement is carried out in short interval of time.

It may be expressed quantitatively in terms of dispersion of the results.

4. Reproducibility

Reproducibility is the consistency of pattern of variation in measurement i.e closeness of the agreement between the results of measurement of the same quantity when individual measurement are carried out

 By different observer
 By different methods
 Using different instruments
 Under different condition, location and times.

It may also be expressed quantitatively in terms of dispersion of the results.

5.Calibration

 The calibration of any measuring instrument is necessary for the sake of accruing of measurement process. It is the process of framing the scale of the instrument by applying some standard (known) signals calibration is a pre-measurement process generally carried out by manufactures.

Calibration

 It is carried out by making adjustment such that the read out device produces zero output for zero measured input similarly it should display output equipment to the known measured input near the full scale input value.
 If accuracy is to be maintained the instrument must be checked and recalibration if necessary.
 As far as possible the calibration should be performed under similar environmental condition with the environment of actual measurement

6.Magnification

Magnification means increasing the magnitude of output signal of measuring instrument many times to make it more readable. The degree of magnification should bear some relation to the accuracy of measurement desired and should not be larger than necessary. Generally the greater the magnification the smaller is the range of measurement.
Some important terminologies used in measurement
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

link to Car Shock Absorber | Function , Working Of Shock Absorber

Car Shock Absorber | Function , Working Of Shock Absorber

Car Shock Absorber | Function , Working Of Shock Absorber

The oscillations cause the wheels the jumps up and fall down till the oscillations die out. Thus, dampers or shock absorbers are used to arrest the oscillation of springs after the vehicle passes over irregular road surface.Shock absorbers are necessary used with coil springs. In case of leaf springs, the friction between leaves provides some dampening effect. However, this is not sufficient sometimes, depending upon friction between leaves. Hence, shock absorbers are necessarily used as additional damping devices.

Function of Shock Absorbers
As explained earlier, the function of the shock absorber is to dampen the vibrations of coil and leaf springs used in the suspension system. These vibrations are generated when vehicle passes over a road bump.
Working of Telescopic type Shock Absorber
In modern cars, hydraulic shock absorbers are used. These absorbers use a piston and a cylinder where cylinder is filled with a suitable oil. The oil is used to dampen the oscillations of piston by a suitable arrangement. The construction of a telescopic type shock absorber has been shown in Figure
(a) Shock Absorber under Compression
(b) Shock Absorber under Expansion
Sectional View of Telescopic Type Shock Absorber

The telescopic shock absorber, mainly consists of a piston a cylinder tube and a reservoir tube. The piston has been provided with through orifices or opening so that fluid can pass from top to bottom or from bottom to top reservoir.Figure shows the condition when absorber is compressed. This happens when vehicle passes over a bump. Under this condition the shock absorber becomes short in length. The piston rod forces the piston down into cylinder tube.Therefore, fluid under the piston is compressed to high pressure. The fluid passes forcefully through small orifices (in piston) into the moves ahead of bump or drops into a depression in the road, the shock absorber expands. Under this condition the piston moves up in the cylinder tube. Because of this, fluid is forced from upper part of cylinder tube to the lower part through the orifices provided in the piston.In both the cases, i.e. expansion and compression, fluid is forced through orifices.Because of this the motion of the piston is slowed down. This puts restriction over the spring action and vibrations of the frame are arrested in shortest time. In this way, shocks (of bump and depression of road) are absorbed by the shock absorber. It also prevents excessive oscillations of wheel when it passes over a bump and depression on the road.Shock absorbers are always provided along with springs in the suspension system of automobiles to prevent oscillations of springs.
Car Shock Absorber | Function , Working Of Shock Absorber
@type":"Person
{"@type":"ImageObject
//www.gunkrazy.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/CarShockAbsorberFunctionWorkingOfShockAbsorber-255x300.gif
{"@context":"http://schema.org/","@type":"Organization
Learn Mechanical Engineering
@type":"ImageObject

« PREV Page 1 … Page 219 Page 220 Page 221 Page 222 Page 223 … Page 338 NEXT »

About Us

LearnMech.Com is a Mechanical Project-oriented platform run by Sachin Thorat who is a B-Tech Graduate in Mechanical Engineering.
