Waste is defined as anything that does not add any value to the product. It could be defined as anything the customer is not willing to pay for.\r\n\r\nManufacturing philosophy is pivoted on designing a manufacturing system that perfectly blends together the fundamentals of minimizing costs and maximizing profit. These fundamentals are Man (labour), Materials and Machines (equipments) called the 3 M\u2019s of manufacturing. And greater quantities of fuel to be added by increasing the air consumption permit and result in greater power produced by the engine. So, it is, therefore, desirable that the engine should take in the greatest possible mass of air. The supply of air is pumped into the cylinder at a pressure greater than the atmospheric pressure and is called supercharging. When greater quantity of air is supplied to an I.C. engine it would be able to develop more power for the same size and conversely a small size engine fed with extra air would produce the same power as a larger engine supplied with its normal air feed.\r\n\r\nSupercharging is used to increase rated power output capacity of a given engine or to make the rating equal at high altitudes corresponding to the unsupercharged sea level rating. Installing a super charger between engine intakes does supercharging and air inlet through air cleaner super charger is merely a compressor that provides a denser charge to the engine thereby enabling the consumption of a greater mass of charge with the same total piston displacement. Power required to drive the super charger is taken from the engine and thereby removes from over all engine output some of the gain in power obtained through supercharging\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nSince the main object of supercharging is to increase the power output of these engine without\r\nincreasing its rotational speed or the dimensions of the cylinder. This is achieved by increasing the\r\ncharge of air, which results more burning of the fuel and a higher mean effective pressure.\r\n\r\n\r\nTYPES OF SUPERCHARGER\r\n\r\nSupercharging is done by means of compressor; there are two types of compressors that may be used as super chargers. They are as follows:\r\n\r\n1. Positive displacement type super chargers.\r\n(a) Piston Cylinder type\r\n(b) Roots blowers\r\n(c) Vane blower\r\n\r\n2. Centrifugal type super chargers or turbo type.\r\n\r\n3. Turbo type super chargers.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\ntypes of super charger used in IC engine\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThe blowers are usually driven from the engine cranks shaft by mean of Spur, helical or herringbone gears, silent chains or V-belts at a speed 2-3 times the engine speed. In the case of turbo-supercharger, the super charger is coupled to a gas turbine in which the exhaust of the engine is expanded.\r\n\r\nThe positive displacement types are used for low and medium speed engines with speeds not over 4000 rev\/min. Positive displacement type used with many reciprocating engines in stationary plants, vehicles and marine installations.\r\n\r\nThe piston cylinder type is used on large and slow speed stationary engines, but their use is limited since they are bulkier, more expensive and less dependable than the rotary type blowers.\r\n\r\nCentrifugal blowers are used both on low speed and high-speed engines. Centrifugal blowers driven by exhaust gas turbine are small and light and are used for stationary, locomotive, and marine and aircraft engine. The speed of the centrifugal type of blowers is high about 10000 to 15000 rev\/min for low speed engines and 15000 to 30000 rev\/min for high-speed engines such as aircraft engines.\r\n\r\n\r\nADVANTAGE OF SUPERCHARGING\r\n\r\nThe various advantages of supercharging are as follows:\r\n\r\n1. Power Increase. Mean effective pressure of the engine can be easily increased by 30 to 50% by supercharging which will result in the increase the power output.\r\n\r\n2. Fuel Economy. Due to better combustion because of increased turbulence, better mixing of the fuel and air, and of an increased mechanical efficiency, the specific fuel consumption in most cases, though supercharging reduces not all.\r\n\r\n3. Mechanical Efficiency. The mechanical efficiency referred to maximum load is increased since the increase of frictional losses with a supercharger driven directly from the engine is quite smaller as compared to the power gained by supercharging.\r\n\r\n4. Fuel Knock. It is decreased due to increased compression pressure because increasing the inlet pressure decreases the ignition lag and this reduces the rate of pressure rise in the cylinder resulting in increasing smoothness of operation.\r\n\r\n5. Volumetric Efficiency. A shock absorber is a type of dashpot.\r\n\r\nPneumatic and hydraulic shock absorbers are used in conjunction with cushions and springs. An automobile shock absorber contains spring-loaded check valves and orifices to control the flow of oil through an internal piston (see below).\r\n\r\nOne design consideration, when designing or choosing a shock absorber, is where that energy will go. In most shock absorbers, energy is converted to heat inside the viscous fluid. In hydraulic cylinders, the hydraulic fluid heats up, while in air cylinders, the hot air is usually exhausted to the atmosphere. In other types of shock absorbers, such as electromagnetic types, the dissipated energy can be stored and used later. In general terms, shock absorbers help cushion vehicles on uneven roads.\r\nConstruction :\r\n1. The assembly consist of sheet metal body which cover with piston and cylinder.\r\n2. Cylinder 'C' houses valve 'A' and Valve 'B'.\r\n3. Cylinder'C' is surrounded by outer tube 'D'.\r\n4. There is annular space between cylinder 'C' and Cylinder 'D'.\r\n5. Valve 'A' and 'B' have small orifice passing through it.\r\n6. The annular space is half field with fluid whereas inner cylinder completely filled.\r\n7. Cylinder 'C' is closed on top with head 'H' and small Gland 'J' is provided to return any fluid back to reservoir.\r\n8. Valve mechanism and rocker arms.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nA good lubricant should possess the following properties:\r\n\r\n1. It should not change its state with change in temperature.\r\n2. It should maintain a continuous film between the rubbing surfaces.\r\n3. It should have high specific heat so that it can remove maximum amount of heat.\r\n4. It should be free from corrosive acids.\r\n5. The lubricant should be purified before it enters the engine.\r\n6. It should be free from dust, moisture, metallic chips, etc.\r\n7. The lubricating oil consumed is nearly 1% of fuel consumption.\r\n8. The lubricating oil gets heated because of friction of moving parts and should be cooled before re-circulation.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nTYPES OF LUBRICANTS:\r\n\r\nLubricants are at following three types.\r\n1.
