Heat generated in the furnace is utilized to convert water into steam.\r\n(c) Main power unit such as an engine or turbine to use the heat energy of steam and perform work.\r\n(d) Piping system to convey steam and water.\r\n\r\nIn addition to the above equipment the plant requires various auxiliaries and accessories depending upon the availability of water, fuel and the service for which the plant is intended.\r\nThe flow sheet of a thermal power plant consists of the following four main circuits :\r\n(a) Feed water and steam flow circuit.\r\n(b) Coal and ash circuit.\r\n(c) Air and gas circuit.\r\n(d) Cooling water circuit.\r\n\r\nA steam power plant using steam as working substance works basically on Rankine cycle.\r\nSteam is generated in a boiler, expanded in the prime mover and condensed in the condenser and fed into the boiler again.\r\n\r\nThe different types of systems and components used in steam power plant are as follows :\r\n(a) High pressure boiler\r\n(b) Prime mover\r\n(c) Condensers and cooling towers\r\n(d) Coal handling system\r\n(e) Ash and dust handling system\r\n(f) Draught system\r\n(g) Feed water purification plant\r\n(h) Pumping system\r\n(i) Air preheater, economizer, super heater, feed heaters.\r\n\r\n\r\nDiagram Of Steam Power Plants :\r\n\r\n\r\nDiagram Of Steam Power Plant\u00a0\r\n\r\nFigure shows a schematic arrangement of equipment of a steam power station. Coal received in coal storage yard of power station is transferred in the furnace by coal handling unit. Heat produced due to burning of coal is utilized in converting water contained in boiler drum into steam at suitable pressure and temperature. The steam generated is passed through the superheater. Super-heated\u00a0steam then flows through the turbine. After doing work in the turbine the pressure of steam is reduced. Steam leaving the turbine passes through the condenser which is maintained the low pressure of steam at the exhaust of turbine. Steam pressure in the condenser depends upon flow rate and temperature of cooling water and on effectiveness of air removal equipment. Water circulating through the condenser may be taken from the various sources such as river, lake or sea. If sufficient quantity of water is not available the hot water coming out of the condenser may be cooled in cooling towers and circulated again through the condenser. Bled steam taken from the turbine at suitable extraction points is sent to low pressure and high pressure water heaters.\r\n\r\nAir taken from the atmosphere is first passed through the air pre-heater, where it is heated by flue gases. The hot air then passes through the furnace. Gear hobbing is one of the major manufacturing processes in the industry. Modern engineering practice is continually increasing its demands for more gearing of old and new types with a higher and higher degree of accuracy.\r\nConstruction Of Gear Hobbing Machine\u00a0\r\n\r\n \tHob- In this process, the gear blank is rolled with a rotating cutter called a hob. Gear hobbing is done by using a multipoint cutting tool called gear hob. It looks like a worm gear having a number of straight flutes all around its periphery parallel to its axis. These flutes are so shaped by giving proper angles to them so that these work as cutting edges. \r\n \tIn gear hobbing operation, the hob is rotated at a suitable rpm and simultaneously fed to the gear blank. \r\n \tThe gear blank is also kept as revolving. Rpm of both, gear blank and gear hob are so synchronized that for each revolution of gear bob the gear blank rotates by a distance equal to one pitch distance of the gear to be cut. \r\n \tThe motion of both gear blank and hob is maintained continuously and steady. Ignition system fulfills this requirement. It is a part of the electrical system which carries the electric current at the required voltage to the spark plug which generates spark at the correct time. It consists of a battery, switch, distributor ignition coil, spark plugs, and necessary wiring.\r\nA compression ignition engine, i.e. a diesel engine does not require any ignition system. Because self-ignition of the fuel-air mixture takes place when diesel is injected in the compressed air at high temperature at the end of the compression stroke.\r\n\r\n\r\nTYPES OF IGNITION SYSTEMS\r\nThere are three types of ignition systems which are used in petrol engines.\r\n\u00a0\r\n(a) Battery ignition system or coil ignition system.\r\n(b) Magneto ignition system.\r\n(c) Electronic ignition system.\r\n\r\n \tIn the battery ignition system, the current in the primary winding is supplied by a battery whereas it is supplied by a magneto in the magneto ignition system.\r\n \tThe battery ignition system is used in cars and light trucks. Magneto ignition system is used in some scooters. Both the systems work on the principle of mutual electromagnetic induction.\r\n \tElectronic ignition systems use solid-state devices such as transistors and capacitors.\r\n\r\n Magneto ignition system\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nMagneto-ignition System Diagram\u00a0\r\nIn this case magneto will produce and supply the required current to the primary winding. In this case as shown, we can have rotating magneto with fixed coil or rotating coil with fixed magneto for producing and supplying current to the primary, the remaining arrangement is the same as that of a battery ignition system. The figure given on the next page shows the line diagram of the magneto ignition system. In the magneto ignition system a magneto is used to generate electric current for producing the spark. A high tension magneto generates a very high voltage needed for spark plug\r\n\r\n\r\n Magneto Ignition System Diagram\r\n\r\n\r\n\u00a0\r\nMain components of the magneto ignition system:\r\na) Frame\r\nb) Permanent magnet\r\nc) Armature\r\nd) Soft iron field\r\ne) Rotor\r\nf) Primary and secondary winding\r\ng) Breaker points\r\nh) Condenser\r\n\u00a0\r\nThe armature consists of an iron core on which there are two sets of windings 1) Primary 2) Secondary\r\n\r\n\r\nWorking of Magneto Ignition System : \r\nThe armature is driven by the engine. As the armature rotates, primary windings cut the lines of force of the magnetic field and induced current flows in the primary circuit. As the primary current reaches its maximum value in each direction, the primary circuit is suddenly opened by a contact breaker, and the current collapses. This action induces a very high voltage in the secondary winding which causes a momentary spark to jump at the spark plug gap. A distributor is provided which carries current to the spark plug through high tension wires. The condenser is used to eliminate the arching at the breaker points and intensifying the current in the secondary circuit. For multi-cylinder engines, a distributor and a rotor are required to distribute the current to different spark plugs.\r\n\r\n\r\nAdvantages\r\n(a) Better reliability due to the absence of battery and low maintenance.\r\n(b) Better suited for medium and high-speed engines.\r\n(c) Modern magneto systems are more compact, therefore require less space.\r\n\r\n\r\nDisadvantages\r\n(a) Adjustment of spark timings adversely affects the voltage.\r\n(b) Burning of electrodes is possible at high engine speeds due to high voltage.\r\n(c) Cost is more than that of magneto ignition systems.\r\n\r\n\r\nAdvantages and Disadvantages of Magneto System Over Battery Ignition System :\u00a0\r\nAdvantages\r\n\r\n1. It is more reliable as compared to the coil ignition system because there is no maintenance problem in the magneto ignition system.\r\n2. As the speed increases, the voltage in the primary winding also increases rapidly and the Intensity of spark is also higher and provides better combustion, as compared to the battery ignition system. Thereforemagneto ignition is very popularly used in racing cars.\r\n3. It is used for medium to high speeds.\r\n4. Space required is less as compared to the coil ignition system.\r\n5. By providing suitable shunts on magneto, the danger of burning of the spark plug is minimized.\r\n6. Very light in weight and compact in size.\r\n7.
